Book excerpt: Excerpt from Little Stories of France The child needs the background of history as an aid to the interpretation of his experience and for the understanding of current events. In our cosmopolitan life, since we are in close touch with all peoples and are constantly hearing about them, there is need at least of the simplest elementary facts in the history of the great nations. The French people have held such a central position in thefworld's affairs, and have contributed so much to civilization, that the young student should at an early stage possess himself of the outlines Of their history. He is then enabled to put together the past and present Of that interesting country and to view the one in the light of the other. Then, too, the fact that French is the first foreign language which American children are expected to study is another valid reason for placing before them in its most interesting form the main facts of French history. Book A Short History of France Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Short History of France Classic Reprint written by Mary Platt Parmele and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-23 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of France IN an attempt to tell the story of a great nation in about 100 pages, it is needless to say there must be a rigid exclusion of all save essential facts. To those already famil iar with the subject, this sketch is offered merely as a reminder of the sequence of conditions and events in the evolution of France; while to the student it is presented as a framework upon which may be placed, in orderly and comprehensible fashion, the results of future reading and research. To the latter class I would suggest that a series of papers, written upon the most prominent themes found in the Table of Contents, will bear fruit in knowledge more real and vital than may be obtained from the writings of others, however eloquent and vivid the presentation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Easy French History: Edited for School Use Many teachers of French find that their stu dents do not understand and appreciate the works which they are called upon to read, because of their ignorance of the most ordinary facts of French history. How and when to give this necessary information has become a problem everywhere, and it is to aid in the solution of this problem that the present book has been pub lished. The work of a French teacher is, of course, to teach the French language, but the instructor who sees this task too narrowly will almost certainly fail. Many questions arise dur ing a year's reading which demand knowledge of an historical nature, and, although the teacher may do his duty as far as his time and the size of his class will allow, it is nevertheless only too true that students obtain little or no connected infor mation, unless such information is contained in the text which they read. The explanation given by the teacher in reading some episode of the Revolution or incident of the siege of Paris may be clear and to the point, but, as the majority of his listeners can in no way connect the facts with the past or with the present, the explanation as well as the story is forgotten before the next day. Book A History of French Literature Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of French Literature Classic Reprint written by Charles Henry Conrad Wright and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-12 with total page 978 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of French Literature HE lack of a convenient and yet comprehensive history of French literature, beyond the range of skeleton outlines or compendiums of facts, has long been apparent from experience to the present writer. On the other hand, excellent works in French, such as those of Brunetiere or of M. Lanson, are written from a standpoint unfamiliar to the English-speaking reader or student, and take too much for granted. M. Lamson's book is, perhaps, the best one-volume history of French literature in existence, but foreigners often find it difficult to handle. An effort is here made to meet the needs of readers in a work going beyond simple outlines, yet not pretending to specialisation in every period a thing which is impossible for one man now that we are, of necessity, either mediaevalists or moderns. The book might, perhaps, more fittingly be called a literary history of France, inasmuch as the relations have been emphasised of literature and social environment, and the Latin writings of the Middle Ages have been included. Accuracy has, of course, been sought as far as possible in view of the wide range of the subject. Yet the author does not aspire, as some do, to the merit of an absolutely independent judgment on every topic. On the contrary, he considers it the duty of the composer of a synthesis to rely, to a reasonable degree, on those who have spent months or years on individual writers whom he must perforce treat summarily. He sets himself down unhesitatingly as a pickpurse of another's wit the authorities from whom he has readily drawn will, it is hoped, be found accounted for in the bibliography. Book France for the Soldier

Download or read book France for the Soldier written by Gilbert Chinard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-24 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from France for the Soldier: A Few Facts for the Information of Americans Excepting the northeast, France has natural frontiers on every side. On the northeast the boundary is purely artificial, being the result of treaties; but on the north she is bounded by the North Sea and the English channel, on the west by the Atlantic ocean, on the southwest by the Pyrenees, on the southeast by the Mediterranean, and on the east by the Alps, the Jura and the Vosges. The geographical position of France is enviable. She is placed at the same distance from the Equator and the Pole. Her climate varies indeed with different regions, but owing to the Atlantic currents it never reaches extreme heat or extreme cold. On the other hand, her position at the extremity of Western Europe has had for France certain disadvantages. As a natural terminus, she had frequently invited great invasions and migrations. The Mediterranean peoples and the tribes from the north had in the past striven for supremacy on her soil; and at Chalons in 451, just as at the Marne in 1914, France had checked the invasion of the barbarians. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geography of France It is difficult to pique the curiosity of the public with the word geography, when for so long it has meant arid lists of countries, rivers, mountains, plains, and cities, forced as so many isolated facts into a child's relue tant mind. Such it is no longer. But the modern geographer finds himself confronted with a problem: how is it possible to convey, an idea of the changed character of geography while using the same Old label? It has become a university study, with wide knowledge as a prerequisite. It is a live, alluring, suggestive subject, yet still we continue to Call it geography for lack of a better term. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Undying Spirit of France: Les Traits E ternels De La France M. Maurice Barres Is a man of such varied interest that he might well be studied from more than one point of view. I shall concentrate my attention, however, particularly to that side of his character shown in his activities as a writer, with a brief glance at those as politician and patriot. As a writer M. Barres stands unquestionably in the front rank of living French authors. His ability for marshalling facts is unexcelled, while his style of expression has seldom been equalled. At times his ideas may not coincide with ours, but we can never fail to recognize the skill and charm with which they are presented. The following pages seem to me to reflect, even in translation, his choice diction and the masterly arrangement of his material.
