Book Effects of the Subprime Crisis on the U S American Financial Reporting System

Download or read book Effects of the Subprime Crisis on the U S American Financial Reporting System written by Miriam Janzen and published by diplom.de. This book was released on 2009-06-30 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inhaltsangabe:Introduction: The Subprime Crisis became noticeable first in the second half of 2006, when many subprime mortgage borrowers in the United States of America (U.S.) were no longer able to make their loan payments, and securities linked to those mortgages, that had been sold all over the world, turned out to be often worth quite less and in general substantially more risky than market participants had expected. The crisis caused several major financial institutions and mortgage lenders to face substantial liquidity problems or even to file for bankruptcy, and Governments to provide funding in order to limit further damage to the economy. As the market tried to figure out the problems underlying the crisis, financial reporting, especially regarding derecognition of financial assets, special purpose entities and fair value measurement, became a matter of public concern. Consequently, the purpose of this work is to discuss these concerns in order to estimate whether and to what extend financial reporting might have contributed to the crisis and to present and assess the usefulness of actions taken by the U.S. Financial Reporting System in response to the crisis. In order to meet this objective, the second main chapter provides a brief description of how the housing boom and the subsequent crisis evolved. The information provided therein shall contribute to the reader s understanding with respect to the following passages and especially judgements made by the author regarding the role of financial reporting in the crisis. The third main chapter will describe the U.S. Financial Reporting System, by providing basic information about U.S. institutions that authoritatively deal with the elements of the system, including their aims, basics about their work and how they interact. The fourth main section of the paper will examine the relevant reporting concepts and disclosure requirements, provide suggestions for improvements, and assess concerns voiced by market participants with respect to financial reporting. Subsequently, the thesis will analyze and judge actions taken by authoritative institutions of the U.S. Financial Reporting Sytems in response to the crisis. This thesis considered publications issued until December 10, 2008. Book Business Scandals Corruption and Reform 2 volumes

Download or read book Business Scandals Corruption and Reform 2 volumes written by Gary Giroux and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2013-07-12 with total page 814 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by an expert on financial analysis and capitalism, this book describes the widespread corruption and specific scandals that have occurred throughout history when ethically-challenged innovators and greedy scoundrels are unable to resist the dark side of corruption. Since the dawn of civilization, corruption has had a perpetual impact on the world's economies. In the modern, technology-enabled, global economy, the effects of those who manipulate free-market capitalism for their own gains regardless of methodology continue to be a problem, despite reforms instituted to attempt to discourage the most blatant practices. Business Scandals, Corruption, and Reform: An Encyclopedia contains more than 300 entries that describe the myriad aspects of corruption, business scandals, and attempts at reform, providing not only detailed information about specific accounting scandals and earnings manipulation but also a broad examination of the entire history of business corruption throughout human civilization. Reviewing all the major scandals from tulip mania in the early 17th century to the subprime mortgage crisis of 2008 and beyond, the author illuminates how corrupt actors in business and the attempts to eliminate these types of abuses have been instrumental to the developing institutional framework of free-market capitalism.

Book Reality and Accounting

Download or read book Reality and Accounting written by Richard Mattessich and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-31 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses and summarizes the revived interest in reality issues (ontology) within accounting, economics, and the information sciences, with a view to informing scholars from these different disciplines about each other’s endeavours in ontological research. Even more importantly, the book aims at familiarizing scholars from various disciplines with an evolutionary approach for examining questions about reality in the social sciences. The book is based on a partly pluralistic approach that assures unity in diversity. Unity, because all existence arises from physical reality; diversity, because emergent properties create biological and social realities that cannot be reduced to physical phenomena. Hence, the book recognizes not only concrete but also abstract entities. It shows, however, that the actualization of these abstract entities requires objectification and concrete manifestation. This pluralistic approach is central to this book. It also is a challenge to those who reject abstract entities as socially real, as well as to those who defend a non-realist position. The major task of this book is to explore proposals towards a uniform ontological basis. This uniform and universal presentation extends beyond traditional ontology (asking ‘what is real?’) to such questions as ‘on which reality level is something real?’ and ‘in which (temporal and modal) way is it real?’. Such an extended analysis) is relevant to accountants, economists, information scientists, other social scientists as well as philosophers.
