Book excerpt: This study examined factors that relate to the persistence of first-generation undergraduate students in a 4-year public university in the Southeastern United States. Results were analyzed from a 2011 two-part survey: CARES-I (College Assessment of Readiness for Entering Students-Intent) and CARES-A (College Assessment of Readiness for Entering Students-Actual/Achieved. Semistructured interviews were conducted with first-generation undergraduate persisters, administrators, and professors. There was no statistically significant difference in persistence between continuing-generation and first-generation students. None of the factors, with the exception of performance goals on CARES A, were found to relate to persistence. Significant positive correlations were found between persistence and residential status, a learning strategies course, gender, high school GPA, and first semester in college GPA. The learning communities program was not found to significantly relate to persistence. The CARES surveys were found to be weak for predicting persistence. There was no significant interaction between any of the factors, persistence, and first-generation and continuing-generation, except for performance goals on CARES I and self-efficacy on CARES A. Findings from the interviews indicated that self-efficacy was highly important to graduation. The students had clear academic and professional, learning, monetary, and social outcome expectations. Student performance goals varied in amount of time, use of learning strategies, and organizational tools. Of the organizational variables, academic and social integration positively impacted persistence. However, the participants wished to have had higher grades as freshmen, found the STEM courses tough, had no informal interaction with administrators or professors, and did not use office hours enough. Students spoke positively of institutional programs, clubs, services, and organizations such as Supplemental Instruction (SI), the Math Lab, and Writing Center. Administrators and professors expressed a need for more information and responsiveness to persistence factors. Persistence was not impeded by family, friends, or work, whereas financial issues were prevalent. Although demographic variables did not negatively impact persistence, exo and macrosystem factors beyond the doors of the university emerged. Recommendations and options are provided for further research and for the university to improve persistence.

However, first generation college students, which include a disproportionate number of minorities and low income populations, continue to lag behind their counterparts in graduating from college. More prevalent in the research are factors that cause first generation college students to drop-out. On the contrary, the researcher utilized a qualitative descriptive methodology to explore factors that enable first generation college students to persist and complete college, rather than drop out. Engaging in a series of in-depth semi-structured interviews, the researcher examined the lived experiences of twelve first generation college students who have persisted at Saint Lucia University (SLU), a faith-based, four year liberal arts college located in California. Four central themes emerged: Support (especially from parents), Challenges Endured, Impetus to Stick it Out, and Institutional Factors. Aside from challenges that included unclear expectations about college life and a lack of confidence in their academic readiness, (though SLU has a population of students who are 55% ethnic minority) many participants encountered a dose of culture shock, as they perceived SLU to be "mostly White and mostly rich." Others professed having encountered racial discrimination. Indeed, it was daunting experiences like these that were most taxing on the participants and their ability to persist to degree. Nevertheless, for many of these students, their dire impetus to succeed was for the prospect of making a better life for themselves and their families."--Abstract, p. 1.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: First-generation college students encounter unique challenges and obstacles and often have lower matriculation rates than continuing-generation college students. Factors influencing academic persistence among first-generation students include financial, emotional, academic, and social difficulties. A theoretical framework comprised of self-determination theory, causality orientation theory, and the theory of persistence guided the examination of academic persistence. A 99-item online survey instrument was administered to undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at a comprehensive regional university located in the southeastern region of the United States during the fall 2015 semester. Results indicate an interrelationship exists between autonomy and academic integration for first generation college students. Academic integration for first-generation college students negatively correlated with mother's highest level of education. Interrelationships exists between relatedness and social integration, as well as hours spent working and social integration for first-generation college students. Academic and social integration are primary elements of academic persistence. Attending to the basic psychological needs of autonomy and relatedness will foster academic and social integration among firstgeneration college students.

Book excerpt: This research study examined the factors that positively influenced the first-to-second year institutional and major persistence efforts of first-generation engineering undergraduates that participated in a first-year program at Kansas State University, a large, land-grant, public, and four-year institution in the Midwestern United States. Historically, both first-generation college students and engineering majors have lower rates of persistence when compared to other populations. In order to provide sufficient context for the study, previous work on college student retention, engineering major persistence, first-year program participation, and the experience of first-generation undergraduate students was examined. Through these efforts, it was determined that the first-year persistence of first-generation engineering students that had participated in a first-year program had not been sufficiently examined. The purpose of this study was to explore the factors that positively influenced the institutional and major persistence efforts of first-generation engineering undergraduate students in a first-year program through a qualitative design and a grounded theory methodology. The following research question at the center of the study was addressed: What were the factors that positively influenced the first-to-second year institutional and major persistence efforts of first-generation engineering students that participated in a first-year program? Through the incorporation of a grounded theory methodology, first-generation engineering students that participated in first-year program and had persisted in engineering from their first to their second year were interviewed. Within the interview setting, the research participants provided considerable insight into their experiences and persistence efforts throughout their first year in the engineering program. The collection and analysis of data led to findings that suggest the existence of six primary elements that positively influenced the first-to-second year institutional and major persistence of first-generation engineering students. By adhering to the grounded theory methodology, a theoretical model, which can be identified as the First-Generation Engineering Student First-Year Persistence Model, was developed. The First-Generation Engineering Student First-Year Persistence Model illustrates the six primary elements that positively influenced the first-to-second year institutional and major persistence for first-generation engineering students and the various subcategories of factors that contribute to each element. Furthermore, a summary of and further discussion of the primary findings were provided. Finally, recommendations for future studies concerning first-generation engineering students and first-to-second year institutional and major persistence efforts were offered.
