Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the relationship between individual and institutional factors that influence the academic and NCLEX-RN® success of racial/ethnic minority nursing students in an Associate Degree Nursing program. The independent variables were race/ethnicity, nursing course grades (NCG), nursing grade point average (NGPA), HESI E2 exam scores, and financial support/aid (yes/no); and the dependent variables were academic success and NCLEX-RN® success. The study used Marianne Jeffreys' Nursing Undergraduate Retention and Success (NURS) model as the theoretical framework. Data was collected from an existing student database on eight cohorts of (White, Black/African American, & Hispanic) nursing students (N=617) who have or should have already graduated and taken the NCLEX-RN®. Results from statistical analyses revealed significant relationship between race/ethnicity and academic success, but no significant relationship between race/ethnicity and NCLEX-RN® success. Hispanic nursing students had the lowest enrollment rate. Black/African American nursing students had higher attrition rates than the other two racial/ethnic groups. Additional results indicated significant relationship between NCG, NGPA, and HESI E2 mean scores and academic and NCLEX-RN success. Policy recommendations to facilitate the academic success of all (primarily Hispanic & Black/African American) nursing students are provided.

Book Expanding Underrepresented Minority Participation

Download or read book Expanding Underrepresented Minority Participation written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2011-07-29 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order for the United States to maintain the global leadership and competitiveness in science and technology that are critical to achieving national goals, we must invest in research, encourage innovation, and grow a strong and talented science and technology workforce. Expanding Underrepresented Minority Participation explores the role of diversity in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) workforce and its value in keeping America innovative and competitive. According to the book, the U.S. labor market is projected to grow faster in science and engineering than in any other sector in the coming years, making minority participation in STEM education at all levels a national priority. Expanding Underrepresented Minority Participation analyzes the rate of change and the challenges the nation currently faces in developing a strong and diverse workforce. Although minorities are the fastest growing segment of the population, they are underrepresented in the fields of science and engineering. Historically, there has been a strong connection between increasing educational attainment in the United States and the growth in and global leadership of the economy. Expanding Underrepresented Minority Participation suggests that the federal government, industry, and post-secondary institutions work collaboratively with K-12 schools and school systems to increase minority access to and demand for post-secondary STEM education and technical training. The book also identifies best practices and offers a comprehensive road map for increasing involvement of underrepresented minorities and improving the quality of their education. It offers recommendations that focus on academic and social support, institutional roles, teacher preparation, affordability and program development.

Book The Experience and Persistence of African American Nursing Students Through the Lens of Critical Race Theory

Download or read book The Experience and Persistence of African American Nursing Students Through the Lens of Critical Race Theory written by Linda Sheryline Barren and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research in the area of minority nursing student persistence is significant because there is a shortage of minority registered nurses in the U.S. As the predominately White RN workforce ages and retires, there will be a greater need for minority registered nurses because of the changing U.S. demographics. The demand for minority registered nurses will be further impacted by the aging baby boomers who will become greater consumers of healthcare. This qualitative research study focused on the persistence factors of minority nursing students who were enrolled in associate degree nursing programs. A semi-structured interview approach was used to interview 10 Black registered nurses who graduated from associate degree nursing programs. The theoretical framework of Critical Race Theory was utilized to analyze the academic experiences of the study participants. Study findings suggested that nursing students encounter microaggression, discrimination and racism while enrolled in nursing education programs. Findings further suggested that persistence factors are multifaceted and include spirituality, support systems, family support, peer support, and socialization.

Book Experiences of Underrepresented Minorities in Doctoral Nursing Programs at Predominantly White Universities

Download or read book Experiences of Underrepresented Minorities in Doctoral Nursing Programs at Predominantly White Universities written by Linda D. Gregory and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study design was constructivist grounded theory. Participants were recruited using social media, flyers, and snowball sampling. Recruitment yielded 20 participants, who self- identified as an URM, spoke English, and attended a public or private PWU with a PhD in nursing program. Semi-structured interviews were audio-taped and transcribed. Iterative, simultaneous data collection and analysis used the ATLAS ti data management software program. Findings indicate that multiple factors, positive and negative, influenced URM PhD nursing students' experiences at PWUs. Four overarching themes emerged: preadmission history and preparedness, becoming a scholar, support and resources and the journey toward graduation and beyond. Subcategories included multiple support systems; racial, ethnic and cultural influences; decision-making processes; and academic environment and resources. Addressing these multifactorial factors may broaden academic nursing's understanding of how to foster successful degree attainment with a significantly diverse professoriate and clinical workforce.

Book Homogeneity in Health Care

Book excerpt: The increasingly diverse demographics of the American patient population fails to be reflected in the nursing profession, at cost to patients. Understanding barriers and protective factors for diverse candidates in graduating from baccalaureate nursing programs is vital to targeting support for minority students. Professional self-concept (PSC) has been associated with predicting career satisfaction and job retention in nursing but has never been examined among minority nursing students. Nursing students at six universities in baccalaureate programs were surveyed. The anonymous survey collected demographic data, PSC scores, and items on perception of support in five areas: academic, financial, social, campus culture, and. Of the 300 individuals who responded, 180 were eligible and completed the survey. Participants in the survey were mostly female (95%), heterosexual (88%), and middle class (55%). 73% of the sample was White and 26% was racial/ethnic minority (REM). REM status is associated with lower self-reported educational and financial support from their educational institution. REM nursing students, on average, have significantly lower PSC scores compared to white nursing students, overall and specifically in the knowledge subcategory. The findings remain, even after accounting for first generation college student status and income from household of origin. This is the first study to compare professional self-concept scores among diverse nursing students. Lower PSC scores indicate an area of need for REM nursing students. Support from one's educational institution may prove to be a viable target of intervention to support REM students.

Book In the Nation s Compelling Interest

Download or read book In the Nation s Compelling Interest written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-06-29 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States is rapidly transforming into one of the most racially and ethnically diverse nations in the world. Groups commonly referred to as minorities-including Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders, African Americans, Hispanics, American Indians, and Alaska Natives-are the fastest growing segments of the population and emerging as the nation's majority. Despite the rapid growth of racial and ethnic minority groups, their representation among the nation's health professionals has grown only modestly in the past 25 years. This alarming disparity has prompted the recent creation of initiatives to increase diversity in health professions. In the Nation's Compelling Interest considers the benefits of greater racial and ethnic diversity, and identifies institutional and policy-level mechanisms to garner broad support among health professions leaders, community members, and other key stakeholders to implement these strategies. Assessing the potential benefits of greater racial and ethnic diversity among health professionals will improve the access to and quality of healthcare for all Americans.

Book What Nursing Students Believe Impacts Academic Success in the First Year of a Baccalaureate Nursing Program

Download or read book What Nursing Students Believe Impacts Academic Success in the First Year of a Baccalaureate Nursing Program written by Tahnee J. Andrew and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The challenges of nursing school exceed the preparation and abilities of many students despite rigorous admission requirements. Nursing faculty strive to find ways to keep attrition rates as low as possible while maintaining the high academic standards necessary for students to become successful and safe nurses. Unfortunately, attrition rates have remained high for decades. To help students achieve academic success, nursing faculty need to learn more about what students believe impacts their success. Using Jeffreys’ Nursing Universal Retention and Success (NURS) (2012) model as a comparative model, this study explored the beliefs of undergraduate nursing students related to factors that impact academic success in the first year of a nursing program. Findings indicated nursing students believe there are multiple factors impacting their academic success and they have the responsibility to address each of those factors to promote their own persistence and progress through their educational program. Participants recognized students’ responsibility related to study skills, time management, priorities, and attitudes. Participants also noted the need for support systems they can access to help them cope with stress and anxiety. Nurse educators can use the findings of this study to develop programs to assist students and provide the necessary supports to increase student retention.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Graduate schools have faced attrition rates of approximately 50 percent for the past 40 years. They have tried to address the problem by focusing on student characteristics and by assuming that if they could make better, more informed admissions decisions, attrition rates would drop. Yet high attrition rates persist and may in fact be increasing. Leaving the Ivory Tower thus turns the issue around and asks what is wrong with the structure and process of graduate education. Based on hard evidence drawn from a survey of 816 completers and noncompleters and on interviews with noncompleters, high- and low-Ph.D productive faculty and Directors of Graduate study, this book locates the root cause of attrition in the social structure and cultural organization of graduate education.
