Book excerpt: This study is a mixed method research looking at Hmong women and their pursuit of higher education. It is a norm in the Hmong culture for women to have less privilege than men which leads to less freedom and more household chores. Studies have been done by other researchers in the 1990's and found these cultural norms as barriers to higher education among Hmong women. This study looks at the barriers to see if it limits women's opportunities to pursue a college degree but will also compare if there are differences between Hmong men and women. The hypothesis is that distance away from home may be an issue among the Hmong population when choosing a college for their daughters. Data will be collected by surveying Hmong college students in Minnesota and Wisconsin as well as interviewing Hmong college students, parents, and educators. Suggestions for future research will be to focus on men's pursuit of higher education.

Book excerpt: This anthology wrestles with Hmong Americans’ inclusion into and contributions to Asian American studies, as well as to American history and culture and refugee, immigrant, and diasporic trajectories. It negotiates both Hmong American political and cultural citizenship, meticulously rewriting the established view of the Hmong as “new” Asian neighbors—an approach articulated, Hollywood style, in Clint Eastwood’s film Gran Torino. The collection boldly moves Hmong American studies away from its usual groove of refugee recapitulation that entrenches Hmong Americans points-of-origin and acculturation studies rather than propelling the field into other exciting academic avenues. Following a summary of more than three decades’ of Hmong American experience and a demographic overview, chapters investigate the causes of and solutions to socioeconomic immobility in the Hmong American community and political and civic activism, including Hmong American electoral participation and its affects on policymaking. The influence of Hmong culture on young men is examined, followed by profiles of female Hmong leaders who discuss the challenges they face and interviews with aging Hmong Americans. A section on arts and literature looks at the continuing relevance of oral tradition to Hmong Americans’ successful navigation in the diaspora, similarities between rap and kwv txhiaj (unrehearsed, sung poetry), and Kao Kalia Yang’s memoir, The Latehomecomer. The final chapter addresses the lay of the land in Hmong American studies, constituting a comprehensive literature review. Diversity in Diaspora showcases the desire to shape new contours of Hmong American studies as Hmong American scholars themselves address new issues. It represents an essential step in carving out space for Hmong Americans as primary actors in their own right and in placing Hmong American studies within the purview of Asian American studies.

Book excerpt: Traditionally and culturally, the Hmong valued formal education highly as an open door to economic stability and higher social status, but historically, they have never had the opportunity to truly live out their educational values. Today, the Hmong are living in the greatest country on earth, the United States of America, where they have found the opportunities to live out their dreams and hopes. Adjusting from preliterate culture to modernization and technological and industrial culture is a big challenge the Hmong are facing in their adopted country. As parents are adapting to new cultures in America, they felt they also needed to preserve their traditional cultures. They are living in two contrasted worlds. As result, parents are slowly assimilated into mainstream society, and children are growing up in between two worlds. Children are inheriting Hmong cultural values by reinforcement of traditional practices at home and learn about American values and cultures in school. In fact, schools have functioned as major agents of assimilation for Hmong children. Many Hmong adults having difficulty in assimilating to American mainstream culture because they are lacking English skills and have only minimal formal educational background. They have no hope to be successful educationally and economically. However, they appreciate the educational opportunities their children receive in America and want them to become educated, because education, especially higher education, is the only means to ensure their future economic security. In order to reach their dreams, Hmong parents and children have to pay a heavy price for their journey to educational and economic successes. I hope that by hearing their struggles and experiences will help us get an insight of the whole story.

The purpose of this project is to identify the disparity and attribute to factors that impact the unequal attainment rates of college degrees between the two genders at California State University, Sacramento. Theories such as ecological, resilience, and self-determination aids the study in understanding how education can be used as an empowerment tool for Hmong women who come from a traditionally patriarchal society. Out of the 326 Hmong students who graduated from Summer 2012 to Spring 2014 at the studied university, Hmong females graduated nearly twice (61.7%) compared to Hmong males at 38.3%.

Book excerpt: This research project examines the education attainment disparity in higher education regarding Hmong female and male students. The purpose of this project is to highlight reasons for the unbalance achievement rate of college degrees between the two genders at California State University, Sacramento. Of the information gathered, it was revealed and made apparent that changes in gender roles - both females and males - have and continue to contribute to the attainment of higher education. Also, the research yielded data into how education is used as a source of empowerment for Hmong female students who come from traditionally patrilineal existence. All in all, Hmong female students achieved their college degrees at a higher rate; showing 56. 6% compared to 39.2% from their male colleagues. The research project also provides plausible recommendations for future research into similar and relevant topics.

Hmong daughters and nyabs are choosing to go against what people from rural Laos view as an unchangeable tradition, of following the path of getting married young and having as many children as possible. This thesis explores the contested nature of the Hmong women's identity and their roles as it was back in their homeland, their struggles assimilating in the United States and their influences to pursue or not pursue higher education.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to explore the educational motivating factors and the parenting styles experienced by Hmong college students. The participants of this study were Hmong college students and alumni who studied at a University of California or a California State University. The data was collected using a quantitative online survey. There were a total of 297 participants, with 220 of the participants completing the survey. The survey consisted of 27 items which measured the type of motivation and the type of parenting styles experienced by participants. The collected data were analyzed through the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) program. The results of this study revealed that the most prevalent parenting style experienced by the participants was an authoritarian (strict) parenting style, followed by an authoritative (flexible) parenting style, and a permissive (lenient) parenting style. Participants selected an authoritative parenting style as the parenting style that they felt would best promote educational motivation within Hmong students. Extrinsic motivational factors such as job security, financial stability, and family acknowledgement, was revealed to have motivated participants to obtain a college degree and would also best serve as educational motivating factors for future Hmong students. This researcher suggests that social services should advocate for policies that will implement the promotion of cultural awareness and earlier higher education awareness among minority students such as Hmong.
