Book Factors that Contribute to Improving Fourth graders Performance in Mathematics

Download or read book Factors that Contribute to Improving Fourth graders Performance in Mathematics written by Joanna Salek and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigated factors that contribute to improving fourth-graders' performance in mathematics by surveying fourth-grade teachers who teach mathematics in order to gain insight into teacher perceptions based on experiences with students in their prior classrooms. The factors were based on prior research documenting common factors that impact student success in mathematics. These factors for success were: parental involvement, instructional aids, instructional strategies, incentives, and integrating mathematics with other disciplines. This study identified specific aspects of these five common factors related to the improvement of fourth-graders' performance in mathematics. The findings from this study indicated that not all of the five common success factors were related to factors for student improvement in mathematics. In fact, this study found that four factors contribute to improving students' performance in mathematics. They are: a) using visual or hands-on manipulatives, b) providing students with praise, c) integrating mathematics with other disciplines such as art, and d) providing students with individualized instruction to meet each student's individual needs and learning style. In addition, aspects that are related to improving fourth-graders' performance in mathematics were documented in the study. KEYWORDS: Elementary, Improvement, Mathematics, Teacher Perceptions

Book Helping Children Learn Mathematics

Download or read book Helping Children Learn Mathematics written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-07-31 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results from national and international assessments indicate that school children in the United States are not learning mathematics well enough. Many students cannot correctly apply computational algorithms to solve problems. Their understanding and use of decimals and fractions are especially weak. Indeed, helping all children succeed in mathematics is an imperative national goal. However, for our youth to succeed, we need to change how we're teaching this discipline. Helping Children Learn Mathematics provides comprehensive and reliable information that will guide efforts to improve school mathematics from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. The authors explain the five strands of mathematical proficiency and discuss the major changes that need to be made in mathematics instruction, instructional materials, assessments, teacher education, and the broader educational system and answers some of the frequently asked questions when it comes to mathematics instruction. The book concludes by providing recommended actions for parents and caregivers, teachers, administrators, and policy makers, stressing the importance that everyone work together to ensure a mathematically literate society.

Book Emergence and Innovation in Digital Learning

Download or read book Emergence and Innovation in Digital Learning written by George Veletsianos and published by Athabasca University Press. This book was released on 2016-06-01 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Educational systems worldwide are facing an enormous shift as a result of sociocultural, political, economic, and technological changes. The technologies and practices that have developed over the last decade have been heralded as opportunities to transform both online and traditional education systems. While proponents of these new ideas often postulate that they have the potential to address the educational problems facing both students and institutions and that they could provide an opportunity to rethink the ways that education is organized and enacted, there is little evidence of emerging technologies and practices in use in online education. Because researchers and practitioners interested in these possibilities often reside in various disciplines and academic departments the sharing and dissemination of their work across often rigid boundaries is a formidable task. Contributors to Emergence and Innovation in Digital Learning include individuals who are shaping the future of online learning with their innovative applications and investigations on the impact of issues such as openness, analytics, MOOCs, and social media. Building on work first published in Emerging Technologies in Distance Education, the contributors to this collection harness the dispersed knowledge in online education to provide a one-stop locale for work on emergent approaches in the field. Their conclusions will influence the adoption and success of these approaches to education and will enable researchers and practitioners to conceptualize, critique, and enhance their understanding of the foundations and applications of new technologies.

Book Effects of Literacy Environmental Factors on Fourth Graders Mathematics related Outcomes in Finland

Download or read book Effects of Literacy Environmental Factors on Fourth Graders Mathematics related Outcomes in Finland written by Minsun Kim and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to many researchers, literacy affects not only students' reading achievement, but also achievement in diverse subjects. To increase students' academic outcomes, as one of the ways to explain how to develop literacy education, many education researchers have focused on environmental factors supporting literacy education, primarily in the student's home. This study examined the effects of literacy environmental factors at home on students' academic achievement, self-concept, and attitude toward mathematics. The data used in this study were from Finland at the fourth grade level in the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) 2011 and the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) 2011. Multiple regression analyses were performed for each dependent variable. The six independent variables which are parents' involvement in literacy learning, parents' highest level of education, early literacy education environment, the number of books, material sources, and students' gender together accounted for approximately 24% of variance in academic achievement in mathematics and affected mathematics academic achievement significantly based on the t statistics for regression coefficients. Early literacy education, parents' involvement in students' literacy learning, parents' highest level of education, the number of books, and students' gender accounted for approximately 8.7% of the variance in students' self-concept in mathematics. In the last analysis, only early literacy education environment and students' gender were significant to predict students' attitude toward mathematics with 1% of the variance. In this study, literacy education environmental factors had effects on explaining and developing all of the dependent variables. Especially, the early literacy education variable and students' gender were used as significant predictors on all dependent variables. In the future study, including the early literacy education, other environmental factors such as SES, parental attitude toward reading which could have a strong relationship with students' outcomes should be explored.

Book Teacher Quality Instructional Quality and Student Outcomes

Download or read book Teacher Quality Instructional Quality and Student Outcomes written by Trude Nilsen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-19 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers insights from modeling relations between teacher quality, instructional quality and student outcomes in mathematics across countries. The relations explored take the educational context, such as school climate, into account. The International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement’s Trends in Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) is the only international large-scale study possessing a design framework that enables investigation of relations between teachers, their teaching, and student outcomes in mathematics. TIMSS provides both student achievement data and contextual background data from schools, teachers, students and parents, for over 60 countries. This book makes a major contribution to the field of educational effectiveness, especially teaching effectiveness, where cross-cultural comparisons are scarce. For readers interested in teacher quality, instructional quality, and student achievement and motivation in mathematics, the comparisons across cultures, grades, and time are insightful and thought-provoking. For readers interested in methodology, the advanced analytical methods, combined with application of methods new to educational research, illustrate interesting novel directions in methodology and the secondary analysis of international large-scale assessment (ILSA).

Download or read book The Knowledge Gap written by Natalie Wexler and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2020-08-04 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The untold story of the root cause of America's education crisis--and the seemingly endless cycle of multigenerational poverty. It was only after years within the education reform movement that Natalie Wexler stumbled across a hidden explanation for our country's frustrating lack of progress when it comes to providing every child with a quality education. The problem wasn't one of the usual scapegoats: lazy teachers, shoddy facilities, lack of accountability. It was something no one was talking about: the elementary school curriculum's intense focus on decontextualized reading comprehension "skills" at the expense of actual knowledge. In the tradition of Dale Russakoff's The Prize and Dana Goldstein's The Teacher Wars, Wexler brings together history, research, and compelling characters to pull back the curtain on this fundamental flaw in our education system--one that fellow reformers, journalists, and policymakers have long overlooked, and of which the general public, including many parents, remains unaware. But The Knowledge Gap isn't just a story of what schools have gotten so wrong--it also follows innovative educators who are in the process of shedding their deeply ingrained habits, and describes the rewards that have come along: students who are not only excited to learn but are also acquiring the knowledge and vocabulary that will enable them to succeed. If we truly want to fix our education system and unlock the potential of our neediest children, we have no choice but to pay attention.

Book Quality Middle Schools

Download or read book Quality Middle Schools written by Wayne K. Hoy and published by Corwin. This book was released on 1998 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building on 20 years of careful research and real-world testing, the authors show administrators how to assess their schools' health. The goal is to improve middle schools by making sure the "culture" is right for all groups - students, teachers, staff. The authors call their measurement tools the Organizational Climate Description Questionnaire Revised for Middle Schools (OCDQ-RM), for tapping the openness of a school's professional interactions, and the Organizational Health Inventory for Middle Schools (OHI-M), for capturing the health of interpersonal relationships in schools. The OCDQ-RM (openness) questionnaire and the OHI-M (health) inventory are included in this book - ready to copy and administer. These measurements are user-friendly and easy to interpret; scoring directions are clearly explained. School leaders, especially superintendents and principals, can use these hands-on tools to understand what's going on in their schools and then make changes as necessary. Actual case studies show how using the questionnaires can help make every middle school a high-quality and positive learning environment.

Book A Case Study on the Comparison of Fourth grade Students Mathematics Achievement as Evidenced by the Measures of Academic Progress Assessment

Download or read book A Case Study on the Comparison of Fourth grade Students Mathematics Achievement as Evidenced by the Measures of Academic Progress Assessment written by Adam D. Dymond and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation was designed to examine whether fourth-grade students who received instruction in a self-contained setting were more likely to meet their target score on the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) test than students who were taught in a departmentalized setting. Fourth-grade students in ALPHA School District took the MAP test in the fall and spring of the academic calendar year. Target scores were originated by the Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA). These target scores showed the typical growth for a student in the particular grade level as calculated by national norms. The MAP test growth norms were very precise. Due to the enormous number of students involved in the norming study, NWEA staff was able to calculate the mean growth of similar groups of students from each grade level (2–10) who scored at each RIT level in the initial testing season. For this study, the researcher focused on students in the fourth grade. -- Fourth-grade students from ALPHA School District were tested in the fall of 2015 and the spring of 2016. Scores of students taking both tests were obtained and categorized into two groups: self-contained and departmentalized. Once this process was completed, the researcher analyzed the target scores to determine whether or not there were significant differences in scores of self-contained and departmentalized classrooms. Teacher participants were asked to respond to a collection of survey questions to determine which factors were key contributors to students finding success in the math program in their classroom structure (self-contained, departmentalized). The researcher followed up by utilizing a group of volunteer interview participants to partake in a brief interview based on the findings to determine the identifiable cultural classroom differences in environments in comparing self-contained and departmentalized settings. -- An analysis of the data determined that all students grew equally well regardless of their target growth and classroom structure. Through a survey, it was determined that self-contained teachers place the highest importance on the factors of human relationships and individualized instruction, while departmentalized teachers place their importance in engaging lessons and content specialization. It was discovered that teachers are better when they teach toward their strengths; that math is most effectively taught in a structured environment where routines are evident; and the value in the importance of engaging students with relevant, creative instruction.
