Book Factors Influencing the Leadership Life Skills of Montana 4 H Youth

Download or read book Factors Influencing the Leadership Life Skills of Montana 4 H Youth written by Allison Maurine Flynn and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its inception, the 4-H program has been through many transitions, and has been constantly challenged to show its benefits to youth. Additionally, funding from 4-H came from multiple supporters resulting in the need for 4-H to show reasons for support. The purpose of this study was to assess the perceptions of Montana 4-H youth related to their leadership life skills and to determine the significant factors that influenced the development of those life skills. The population consisted of 2008 Montana 4-H Congress participants and 2007-2008 Montana 4-H Ambassadors. The survey instrument consisted of three sections: selected demographic information and 4-H participation, involvement in 4-H activities and leadership roles, and the Youth Leadership Life Skills Development Scale (YLLSDS). YLLSDS was a valid and reliable instrument developed by Seevers, Dormody and Clason (1995). Data were collected during the Montana 4-H Congress and survey was mailed to Montana 4-H Ambassadors. The data were entered into Microsoft Excel and analyzed using SPSS. The responses to the YLLSDS with the highest means were "have good manners," "get along with others", and "show a responsible attitude." Analysis revealed that Montana 4-H Ambassadors had statistically significant higher YLLSDS scores than those who had never been an Ambassador. The factors with the greatest influence on leadership life skills development were gender, 4-H Districts, and participation in the Ambassador program. Involvement in 4-H activities predicted 6.9% of the variation in YLLSDS scores and involvement in leadership roles accounted for 7.3% of the variation in YLLSDS scores. Leadership life skills were gained through the Ambassador program, partaking in leadership roles and involvement in leadership activities. The research attested to the effectiveness of the Ambassador program. Further research was recommended to determine which activities, leadership roles and aspects of the Ambassador program were most successful at building life skills. Further research to determine the significant variation between 4-H Districts would be useful. The study supported 4-H as a successful youth organization that responsibly teaches youth leadership life skills.

Book Life Skill Development of Youth Participants of the 4 H Beef Skillathon Program

Download or read book Life Skill Development of Youth Participants of the 4 H Beef Skillathon Program written by Josey Megan Harris and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 4-H agents and agriculture teachers across Tennessee teach youth about animal science projects using a variety of different methods, and these youth typically go on to compete in the Tennessee Junior Livestock Exposition Skillathon competition for their chosen animal project. Skillathon is an educational delivery method where a facilitator conducts a learning station where youth can gain knowledge or demonstrate their knowledge and skills learned by doing livestock project work. However, approximately 27% of youth in Tennessee with beef projects choose not to participate in the skillathon. This is troubling since early research has shown life skills are developed by youth participating in the skillathon. As a result, this study examined youth leadership life skills development among beef skillathon participants and determined factors influencing motivation to participate in the beef skillathon. The results of the study coincide with previous research. Youth participants perceived that they developed leadership life skills as a result of participating in the skillathon. The major factors influencing their participation in skillathon were the following: (a) I wanted to see how much I knew about my project, (b) I wanted to be Premier Exhibitor, (c) I thought it would be fun, (d) To achieve a goal, (e) Build self-confidence, (f) Interested in an animal science career, and (g) Challenge myself to try new things. Based on the results of this study, county 4-H agents and school-based agricultural education teachers should consider recruitment strategies and opportunities for growth in their present livestock program to enable more youth to benefit from youth leadership life skill development as a result of participating in the skillathon. Awards and recognition programs should continue to be an integral part of the Tennessee Junior Livestock Exposition, mainly the Premier Exhibitor Award as most participants found the award to be an influencing factor in their participation in the skillathon. This study should be replicated with other populations of skillathon participants and with other types of animal skillathons. Future research should be conducted on a national level to gauge the perceived youth leadership life skill development of youth that participate in the National Skillathon competition.

Book Development of Youth Leadership Life Skills of Texas Youth as San Antonio Livestock Exposition School Tour Guides

Download or read book Development of Youth Leadership Life Skills of Texas Youth as San Antonio Livestock Exposition School Tour Guides written by Laura A Real and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many youth organizations, including 4-H, FFA, and Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), offer countless opportunities for their members to learn and further develop leadership life skills that are important in becoming contributing members of society as adults. The purpose of this study was to determine if Texas 4-H, FFA, and FCCLA members were developing leadership life skills as school tour guides at the San Antonio Livestock Exposition. Additionally, demographic characteristics were evaluated to determine which of these characteristics affected leadership life skills development. Demographic characteristics evaluated included gender, age, ethnicity, youth organization membership, years of membership, years of experience as a school tour guide, and previous leadership skills training. The target population was Texas 4-H, FFA, and FCCLA members who served as school tour guides at the San Antonio Livestock Exposition. School tour guides referred to the 4-H, FFA, FCCLA members who imparted their personal knowledge of agriculture to elementary-aged students from San Antonio and surrounding area schools that requested an educational tour at the San Antonio Livestock Exposition. There were 1,691 school tour guides on the days of February 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 17, and 18, 2004. All school tour guides returning for the afternoon exit-meeting during the 2004 San Antonio Livestock Exposition were asked to complete the questionnaire. The questionnaire was a 28-item survey instrument that was based on the scales: Working with Groups, Understanding Self, Communicating, Making Decisions, and Leadership. Conclusions showed school tour guides had developed leadership life skills. The most influential demographic characteristics were gender, previous leadership experiences, and ethnicity. Females and those participants who had had previous leadership experiences had stronger perceptions of their leadership life skills. In addition, African Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanics, and Anglos all had stronger perceptions of their leadership life skills when compared to Native Americans. As a result of this study, the researcher recommends that youth should be encouraged to participate as school tour guides at the San Antonio Livestock Exposition. School tour guides had developed leadership life skills. In addition, youth should also be encouraged to participate in other leadership- development activities through other programs to further develop and enhance their leadership life skills.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children in today's world are inundated with information about who to be, what to do and how to live. But what if there was a way to teach children how to manage priorities, focus on goals and be a positive influence on the world around them? The Leader in Meis that programme. It's based on a hugely successful initiative carried out at the A.B. Combs Elementary School in North Carolina. To hear the parents of A. B Combs talk about the school is to be amazed. In 1999, the school debuted a programme that taught The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Peopleto a pilot group of students. The parents reported an incredible change in their children, who blossomed under the programme. By the end of the following year the average end-of-grade scores had leapt from 84 to 94. This book will launch the message onto a much larger platform. Stephen R. Covey takes the 7 Habits, that have already changed the lives of millions of people, and shows how children can use them as they develop. Those habits -- be proactive, begin with the end in mind, put first things first, think win-win, seek to understand and then to be understood, synergize, and sharpen the saw -- are critical skills to learn at a young age and bring incredible results, proving that it's never too early to teach someone how to live well.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some books address outdoor leadership; others focus on adventure programming. None delve into the specifics of both topics like Effective Leadership in Adventure Programming, Third Edition, does. The first edition of this book helped define the body of knowledge for an emerging profession. Two editions later, this groundbreaking text—now in full color—provides adventure leaders with the tools and evidence they need to show that their outdoor programs are effective and have a lasting impact on their participants. Internationally renowned authors Simon Priest and Michael Gass have significantly updated the content, based on the latest research, issues, and trends in the field of adventure education and leadership. They have reorganized chapters to conform to their new model of building core competencies. In addition, this third edition includes the following features: • Material on technology, social justice, cultural adaptation, sustainability, and facilitation techniques • An online instructor guide that offers activities, discussion questions, and assessments compiled from a group of acclaimed instructors • A digital field handbook that offers quick reference to key models, concepts, and checklists covered in the text • An expanded version of global perspectives, valuable for long-standing programs as well as those just beginning to enter the field Effective Leadership in Adventure Programming details both the art and science of adventure leadership, helping a new generation of outdoor leaders develop their skills. The text extends the focus on evidence-based models, theories, and best practices, showing that science and research are as important to the profession as the natural beauty of the environment. The book describes the core competencies of outdoor leadership, providing a framework that helps leaders connect with participants in meaningful ways, based on mutual goals. The focus on the science side is invaluable to new leaders and less-experienced leaders, and it is a great refresher for leaders with more experience. This new edition offers a more detailed look at diversity and cultural competencies, preparing leaders to effectively manage diverse populations of participants. In addition, the content is in line with the updated accreditation standards from the Association for Experiential Education. The opening chapters of Effective Leadership in Adventure Programming supply a solid foundation in the research, philosophy, ethics, and history of outdoor leadership. Numerous chapters explore the skills leaders need, with topics that include technical activity, safety and risk management, environment, organization, instruction, and facilitation. The authors also examine leadership styles and conditional leadership issues, communication, sound judgment, decision making, problem solving, and the trends and issues in adventure programming. Effective Leadership in Adventure Programming will help readers understand the four adventure program areas—recreation, education, development, and therapy—and how they influence the delivery of outdoor leadership. The book is a valuable resource for the training and education of future outdoor leaders. It will help readers know why they should work in the profession and understand how they can make a difference by being an effective outdoor leader.
