Book Factors Influencing the Efficiency of Commercial Banks in Sri Lanka

Download or read book Factors Influencing the Efficiency of Commercial Banks in Sri Lanka written by Samangi Bandaranayake and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The important status of the commercial banking sector in the financial environment of the economy has encouraged the researchers to inquire into the determinants of bank efficiency. This study focuses on two aspects related to bank efficiency in Sri Lanka. One is to identify the influence of bank-specific and operating environment factors on bank efficiency. The second is to find whether the ownership types of banks matter in explaining bank efficiency. To this end, two efficiency measures have been employed: Net Interest Margin (NIM) and Return on Assets (ROA). The selected sample consists of fourteen licensed commercial banks. Based on the data during the sample period 2001-2011, the estimation of parameters has been done using the random effect panel data approach. There are a few important findings. First, the estimation results associated with the two efficiency measures are somewhat different. Second, except for a few cases, we observe the expected sign of the parameters. Third, the determinants of efficiency vary across the ownership type of the banks. Fourth, in terms of the significance of the proposed determinants, ROA is a more suitable efficiency measure for state banks while NIM is a better measure for private and foreign commercial banks. Finally, there is a tendency for operating environmental factors becoming significant when efficiency is measured in terms of NIM and bank-specific factors are more important in explaining efficiency when ROA is selected as the proxy.

Book Evaluating Total Factor Productivity Growth of Commercial Banks in Sri Lanka

Download or read book Evaluating Total Factor Productivity Growth of Commercial Banks in Sri Lanka written by A. Thayaparan and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study focuses on total factor productivity growth and its decomposition of commercial banks in Sri Lanka. For this purpose, two state banks , Bank of Ceylon and Peoples' bank and four private banks, namely, Commercial bank, Seylan bank, Hatton National Bank and Sampath were selected over the period 2009-2012. By using Data envelopment analysis (DEA) total factor productivity and its components were measured in terms of efficiency change, technical efficiency change, pure efficiency change and scale change. The data related to interest income and amount of loans which were considered as two outputs and amount of deposits, total assets, number of staff and interest expenses considered as four inputs were collected from annual reports of Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE) in Sri Lanka and were analyzed on the assumption of output oriented method with constant returns to scale. It was found that, all six banks operate averagely at 87.2 percent of overall efficiency and it reveals the less performance of the banks. This less performance was achieved due to the less progress in technical change than efficiency change and the finding highlights that technical change has been the main constraint to achieve a high level of total factor productivity of commercial banks in Sri Lanka. Among the private banks, Seylan bank has the highest efficiency of 1.033 than other banks and among the state banks, Peoples' bank have the values of 0.773 than Bank of Ceylon. The overall results concluded that comparatively selected private banks are more efficient than state banks in the study period in Sri Lanka.

Thus, the purpose of conducting this study is to identify the factors influencing on the acceptance of EPS systems such as credit cards, debit cards, mobile banking and internet banking. For this study, a simple random selection method was used to choose 100 customers who are using e-payment systems in Sri Lanka. An online questionnaire was used to gather data with the purpose of collecting data from customers engaged with various banks. Collected data were analyzed through quantitative techniques such as Chi square analysis and multiple regression analysis. The overall result revealed that the acceptance of EPS in Sri Lanka is highly sensitive to the performance expectancy, effort expectancy and perceived security. Findings of this study will provide information about customer's perception on EPS systems in the Sri Lankan context among influential factors of on the acceptance of EPS system which will be helpful for commercial banks in order to ensure that the E-payment systems are processed effectively.

Book The Impact of Credit Risk Management on Financial Performance A Study of State Commercial Banks in Sri Lanka

Download or read book The Impact of Credit Risk Management on Financial Performance A Study of State Commercial Banks in Sri Lanka written by Rajkumar Perinpanathan and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study analyzed the impact of credit risk management on the financial performance of state commercial banks of Sri Lanka and also attempted to establish if there exists any relationship between the credit risk management determinants by use of CAMEL indicators and financial performance of state commercial banks in Sri Lanka. A causal research design was undertaken in this study and this was facilitated by the use of secondary data which was obtained from the annual reports from the respective banks. The study used multiple regression analysis in the analysis of data and the findings have been presented in the form of tables and regression equations. The study found out that there is a strong impact between the CAMEL components on the financial performance of State commercial banks in Sri Lanka. The study also established that capital adequacy, asset quality, management efficiency and liquidity had negative relationship with financial performance (ROE) whereas earnings had a strong positive relationship with financial performance. This study concludes that CAMEL model can be used as a proxy for credit risk management.

Book Determinants of Technical Efficiency of Banks in Sri Lanka

Download or read book Determinants of Technical Efficiency of Banks in Sri Lanka written by Senarath Lalithanada Seelanatha and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines determinants of technical efficiency in the intermediation and in the assets transformation functions using 16-year (1989 to 2003) unbalanced penal data set from banking industry in Sri Lanka. Technical efficiency scores are estimated using the input-oriented constant return to scale (CRS) data envelopment analysis model (DEA model). Tobit regression model has been used for identifying the significance of the influence of various factors on technical efficiency. Variables representing profitability, liquidity and newness (new vs. old) have shown positive relationships with TE(I) and negative relationships with TE(A). On the one hand, size and inflation have indicated a negative relationship with TE(I) and positive relationships with TE(A). This finding showed that profitability and liquidity enhance the intermediary process of the banking industry giving incentives to managers for their effective decision making capability.

Book Banking Efficiency and Financial Development in Sub Saharan Africa

Download or read book Banking Efficiency and Financial Development in Sub Saharan Africa written by Sandrine Kablan and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2010-06-01 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study assesses the determinants of banking system efficiency in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) and asks what, besides the degree of efficiency, explains the low level of financial development in the region. It uses stochastic frontier analysis to measure efficiency and a generalized method of moments system to explain financial development. SSA banks are found to be generally cost-efficient, but nonperforming loans undermine efficiency, which suggests that improvement in the regulatory and credit environments should improve efficiency. The political and the economic environment have held back financial development in SSA.

Book Lebanon Determinants of Commercial Bank Deposits in a Regional Financial Center

Download or read book Lebanon Determinants of Commercial Bank Deposits in a Regional Financial Center written by Mr.Harald Finger and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2009-09-01 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper empirically examines the demand for commercial bank deposits in Lebanon, a regional financial center. With Lebanon's high fiscal deficits financed largely by domestic commercial banks that rely on deposit funding, deposit growth is a key variable to assess government financing conditions. At the macro level, we find that domestic factors such as economic activity, prices, and the interest differential between the Lebanese pound and the U.S. dollar are significant in explaining deposit demand, as are external factors such as advanced economy economic and financial conditions and variables proxying the availability of funds from the Gulf. Impulse response functions and variance decomposition analyses underscore the relative importance of the external variables. At the micro level, we find that in addition, bank-specific variables, such as the perceived riskiness of individual banks, their liquidity buffers, loan exposure, and interest margins, bear a significant influence on the demand for deposits.
