Book excerpt: This study sought to determine factors influencing the growth of small and micro enterprises (SMEs) in Kisumu city of Kenya. The case study was beauty salons. Salons provide employment, contribute to entrepreneurship and innovation, and foster competitiveness. However, they have continually faced difficulties resulting in slowed growth of the sector. Some of the difficulties they face are high taxation, lack of credits, inadequate capital and poor book keeping, stiff competition, poor policies, bad politics, lack of adequate infrastructure, insecurity, bad management, in appropriate personal factors and superstitious beliefs. To this end the study summarizes these factors as monetary, environmental and internal. The study concludes that monetary factors are most critical to the growth of the salons. Finally the study recommends that the government of Kenya should create an enabling financial environment for salons as well courses on business management particularly in book keeping.

The researcher investigated why Women-owned enterprises remain the same way year in year out without, an increase in number of employees or any other sign to indicate graduation from one level to another. The researcher wanted to find out why enterprises owned by women operate under significant constraints which greatly inhibit realization of their full potential. Many developing countries have attempted to put in place various intervention programmes to address factors that affect the graduation of women owned micro-enterprises; unfortunately many of them are policies yet to be implemented. Through the assistance from Nyeri municipal-council, the researcher acquired the target population of Micro-Enterprises within Nyeri town which was the survey under study. The research design that the researcher used was the descriptive survey research design. Variables, for instance financial accessibility was looked at among others and their influence on graduation of micro-enterprises. The instruments that the researcher used was the Questionnaire and Interviews. The researcher came up with comprehensive results that can be useful to women in micro-enterprises and the Government at large. Pre-testing procedure was carried out to ensure the validity and reliability of the data to be collected. A descriptive statistic procedure was used to carry out the data analysis. Bar-charts, tables and pie-charts are used for data presentation. Some of the major findings in this research include the fact that many women operating micro-enterprises started their enterprises with personal savings as they could not access loans from formal institutions due to lack of collateral- Due to their low level of education, majority of them exhibited challenges in record keeping as well as marketing which are very essential for graduation of an enterprise from micro to small.

SMEs are essential in all economies especially to the developing countries characterized by major unemployment and income distribution challenges. In Kenya, SMEs are essential to the economy for which they are considered the main drivers. There are about 7.5 million SMEs in Kenya providing employment and income generating opportunities to low income sectors of the economy. The official policy framework of SMEs in Kenya is contained in the Sessional Paper No 2 of 2005: Development of Micro and Small Enterprises for Wealth and Employment Creation for Poverty Reduction. The policy forms the basis for enacting the SME Act which institutionalizes SME policy in Kenya (Syekei & Opijah, 2012). The contribution of the SMEs sector to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in Kenya increased from 13.8 percent in 1993 to about 40 percent by 2008. The sector further provides approximately 80% of the total employment and contributes about 92% of the new jobs created within the economy. The sector serves as the bedrock for industrializing the country in the future (Capital Markets Authority, 2010). In the developing countries such as Kenya, with large informal or micro enterprise sectors, SMEs constitute the middle of the size range, hence their strategic importance. SMEs are considerably more complicated in terms of the organizational structure as opposed to microenterprises but less complicated as opposed to large corporations with layers of management and high division of labor among other characteristics. In terms of technology SMEs are intermediate between high labor intensive technologies and high capital intensive technologies providing SMEs with a special role in generation of adequate or decent employment (Palma, 2005). Due to these characteristics various constraints lower SMEs resilience to risk and prevent them from growing and attaining economies of scale. The challenges faced by SMEs in Kenya are not limited to the areas of financing investments and working capital but also include human resource development, market access and access to modern technology and information. Consequently, there are various factors that have supported SMEs growth since the 1990s (Capital Markets Authority, 2010).

This paper analyzes the impact of socio-economic factors in relevance to entrepreneurship development of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) across Chennai, Tamil Nadu State, India.This paper attempts to explain the infrastructure that has to be developed in order to cultivate the quality of leadership among potential enterprising young men. Attempts are being made to inculcate the spirit of entrepreneurship. Our empirical results reveal that most of the selected entrepreneurs of SMEs perceive the relevance of these factors to the highest degree. They are tempted to enter the entrepreneurship sector because of the perceived opportunities available to make appreciable profit. The study also reveals that the factors which are not considered to be of high importance in the bygone days, such as Education, Religion, Previous Experience, Family Type and Legal Status have significant influence on the entrepreneurial behavior and the operational performance of the selected SMEs' business, in the recent period. Thus, there exists necessity for the Government and the related sponsoring institutions to look into these factors and encourage the young entrepreneurs who in turn will render their full support towards national economy.

The study established that form of ownership, educational and managerial skills of the owners and employees, location of the SME and access to financial resources are some of the internal factors that that affected growth and expansion of SMEs. The study findings will be of value to relevant managers of SMEs in Kibera, Policy makers, Scholars and financial advisers.

Economic hardship experienced in the formal sector in Kenya, and indeed in other developing countries have contributed to the enthusiasm now associated with MSEs sector. Increasingly, the sector is perceived as critical component of much needed skills, employment and generation of livelihood for growing number of people within urban as well as rural sector. Non- Governmental Organizations, Church based organizations and relevant lines Government Ministries have played a major role in business development in Turkana community, assisting mainly women and youth to start and manage group businesses. The commonly used mode of assistance is the provision of finance and financial management skills, as well as connecting client with market outlets. Despite all these efforts businesses collapse as soon as the assisting organization has pulled out. This study sought to contribute to this effort through determining factors influencing perception of Microenterprise activities by women in Turkana community in Kenya. The study was based on survey research design. The study was conducted through interview using a structured questionnaire with a five point Likert-type scale. The target population was all women in Turkana community and a sample of 80 respondents were interviewed to determine to what extent cultural factors, socioeconomic factors, access to credit and government programs influence perception of Microenterprise activities by Women in Turkana Community. Descriptive statistics was used to analyze data. Findings were presented using frequency and percentage tables. Statistical package for social scientists was used in analyzing Quantitative data. Qualitative was transcribed, organized into various emerging themes and reported. The study found out that family care and cultural based stereo-type roles have made it difficult for youth and women to engage in micro enterprise activities, respondents did not have relevant skills and training in business and due to low educational level the youth and women micro entrepreneurs had not appreciated access to credit as an engine for business development.
