Book Invasive Species Management

Download or read book Invasive Species Management written by Mick N. Clout and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-07-30 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Invasive alien species are a major and growing threat to biodiversity worldwide. The transport of organisms through increased levels of trade and tourism is leading to the widespread breaching of natural biogeographic barriers at unprecedented rates. Consequences can be severe, especially in naturally isolated ecosystems. Invasive alien species can cause the extinction of vulnerable endemic species, alter the structure and composition of communities, disrupt successional pathways, and lead to the loss of ecosystem services. Global climate change may further exacerbate the spread of alien species, as climatic zones shift and potential ranges alter. The effective management of invasive alien species is clearly a priority for biological conservation worldwide. This book first provides strategies for managing such species at successive invasion stages, from prevention at the border to control of major infestations. It then describes the general tools and approaches that are recommended for successful management of particular groups of invasive organisms in a range of environments. In each case, the ecological basis and practical requirements of invasive alien species management are addressed. This integration of proven techniques and policies will be useful to a wide readership of students, academics, conservation practitioners, invasive species managers, legislators, and to the broader community concerned with biological conservation.

Book The Handbook of New Zealand Mammals

Download or read book The Handbook of New Zealand Mammals written by Carolyn King and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2021-01-20 with total page 1027 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Handbook of New Zealand Mammals is the only definitive reference on all the land-breeding mammals recorded in the New Zealand region (including the New Zealand sector of Antarctica). It lists 65 species, including native and exotic, wild and feral, living and extinct, residents, vagrants and failed introductions. It describes their history, biology and ecology, and brings together comprehensive and detailed information gathered from widely scattered or previously unpublished sources. The description of each species is arranged under standardised headings for easy reference. Because the only native land-breeding mammals in New Zealand are bats and seals, the great majority of the modern mammal fauna comprises introduced species, whose arrival has had profound effects both for themselves and for the native fauna and flora. The book details changes in numbers and distribution for the native species, and for the arrivals it summarises changes in habitat, diet, numbers and size in comparison with their ancestral stocks, and some of the problems they present to resource managers. For this third edition, the text and references have been completely updated and reorganised into Family chapters. The colour section includes 14 pages of artwork showing all the species described and their main variations, plus two pages of maps.

Book Factors Affecting 1080 Pellet Bait Acceptance by House Mice Mus Musculus

Download or read book Factors Affecting 1080 Pellet Bait Acceptance by House Mice Mus Musculus written by Penny Fisher and published by . This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Avoidance of 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) could be one of the main reasons why multi-species control operations sometimes do not produce high reductions in wild house mouse (Mus musculus) populations in New Zealand. This study investigated how the concentration of 1080 in pellet bait affects acceptance by mice; whether pre-feeding with non-toxic bait mitigates mouse avoidance of bait containing 1080; and whether a non-toxic bait containing a masking agent is acceptable to mice. Wild-caught mice demonstrated very low acceptance of, and subsequent low mortality (25%) from, baits containing 0.08% 1080 in a two-choice laboratory test. In a second test, mice ate comparatively more pellets containing 0.001% 1080, but there was no resulting mortality and the non-toxic alternative pellets were still significantly favoured. Pre-feeding for 3 days with non-toxic pellets did not improve the low acceptance of 0.15% 1080 pellet baits by mice. In two of the three two-choice tests, the intake of all food by mice was significantly reduced for 2 days following the introduction of 1080-treated food. This "drop feed" effect was followed by an increase, mostly of non-toxic food, in daily intake over the next 3 days, to return to eating similar amounts to those measured before the introduction of 1080 (and to daily food intakes of control mice). Non-toxic bait was strongly preferred over two different types of non-toxic bait containing a masking agent. We suggest that avoidance of 1080 by mice is mediated by conditioned taste aversion. However, masking the taste of 1080 may not be effective if mice are micro-sampling and learning to associate sublethal poisoning effects with any distinctive taste. Improvement of bait efficacy may involve developing baits that delay the onset of symptoms of 1080 poisoning; or pre-feeding with baits containing a non-toxic substance with similar taste and/or odour to 1080.

Book Bait Station Preferences of Ship Rats

Download or read book Bait Station Preferences of Ship Rats written by E. B. Spurr and published by . This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Department of Conservation (DOC) surveillance programmes to detect rodent invasions on rodent-free islands currently involve observation of rodent interference with toxic baits in bait stations. Different DOC Conservancies use different types of bait station. We monitored the behavioural responses of 24 wildcaught captive ship rats (Rattus rattus) to four currently used bait station types; yellow plastic pipe, wooden box ("rat motel"), wooden tunnel, and white plastic Philproof bait stations. The bait stations contained non-toxic bait similar to the toxic bait used in surveillance programmes. More than 75% of the rats entered the yellow plastic pipe, wooden box, and wooden tunnel bait stations, but fewer than 10% entered the Philproof bait stations. Rats ate bait from the first three bait station types but not from the latter. The average amount of bait eaten per night by the rats that ate bait (0.8 g) was not enough for a lethal dose for 50% of the population if the baits had contained 20 ppm, or even 50 ppm, brodifacoum. On the basis of these results, DOC should use yellow plastic pipe, wooden box, or wooden tunnel bait stations rather than Philproof bait stations for surveillance for ship rats. However, other bait station types and the responses of kiore (R. exulans) and house mouse (Mus musculus) to different bait stations should be tested before any final decision is made on the best type to use in multispecies rodent surveillance programmes.

Book Evaluation of Rodent Bait Station Use Under Controlled Conditions

Download or read book Evaluation of Rodent Bait Station Use Under Controlled Conditions written by DE. Kaukeinen and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A method was developed to evaluate the responses of groups of wild Norway rats to bait stations. Groups of rats were first acclimated to test arenas of 5.6 m2 which each contained abundant harborage in the form of a covered pallet, drain pipes, and masonry blocks. Activity levels were measured daily by four methods: bait consumption, tracks, fecal counts, and motion detector (actimeter) counts. When activity had stabilized, one bait station containing an attractive nontoxic food and additional actimeters were added to each arena. Daily observations revealed changes in activity around the exterior of stations, time until entry, and the initiation and quantity of consumption of the station bait (unpoisoned EPA meal). In tests using the protocol, replicated comparisons were made of eight "tamper-proof" bait stations having various degrees of design complexity. In general, simpler designs showed more rapid and greater utilization and bait consumption. The method has application to evaluations with house mice and for studies of toxic baits in particular station designs.

Book Comparison of EPA Animal Biology Laboratory and Company Laboratory Efficacy Data for Federally Registered Rat and Mouse Baits

Download or read book Comparison of EPA Animal Biology Laboratory and Company Laboratory Efficacy Data for Federally Registered Rat and Mouse Baits written by SD. Palmateer and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors compared the efficacy data for federally registered rat and mouse baits tested both by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) Animal Biology Laboratory and by company laboratories. We chose ready-to-use, dry bait products evaluated according to the same laboratory test protocols. The data, which included 364 tests, were analyzed in two ways. First, we made 12 comparisons based on the mean percent acceptance and the mean percent mortality. Regardless of the combination of active ingredients (diphacinone, warfarin, or prolin), the species (Norway rat or house mouse), or the efficacy criterion (acceptance or mortality), the products always did better in company tests than in EPA tests on the average. These differences were usually greater for comparisons of the mean percent acceptance than for comparisons of the mean percent mortality. Second, we determined the amount of agreement between 99 matched sets of EPA and company data. We found agreement in 65 of the comparisons. Where agreement was not found, the products failed company tests but passed EPA tests in 5 cases, and passed company tests but failed EPA tests in 29 cases. Where individual companies have performed subsequent studies, they have confirmed in their laboratories the efficacy problems discovered in the EPA laboratory. We have discussed the reasons for the differences between the EPA and company data and the steps that are being taken or should be taken to reduce these differences.

Book A Review of the Current Knowledge of Rodent Behaviour in Relation to Control Devices

Download or read book A Review of the Current Knowledge of Rodent Behaviour in Relation to Control Devices written by B. Kay Clapperton and published by Science & Technical Publishing Department of Conservation. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A recent review of techniques used to detect and control the four introduced rodent species found on the New Zealand mainland and islands (house mice Mus musculus, ship rats Rattus rattus, Norway rats Rattus norvegicus and kiore Rattus exulans) identified the need for better understanding of rodent behaviour. This report provides a review of the published literature on rodent behaviour in relation to control devices, especially bait stations and baits. The review is based on searches of computer databases and information from key researchers on: taste preferences, meal size, neophobia, feeding behaviour, movements, home ranges and territoriality, bait shyness, aversion, resistance, odours, and colour preference. Other aspects of rodent behaviour, including responses to repellents, sounds and traps, are also briefly summarised.
