Book excerpt: In the second half of the twentieth century, significant changes were occurring within the agricultural industry, including an increase in efficiency and government intervention, as well as expanded and more complicated patterns of trade. Download or read book The Rural written by Richard Munton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 563 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rural has long been regarded as an important site of geographical inquiry even if our understanding of it has not always been treated as conceptually different from the urban. That said, rural research has pursued a number of distinct empirical agendas ranging from the operation and impacts of agribusiness, to local resistance to global food supply chains, to differing representations of the rural. In doing so, rural geographers have critically examined the relevance and significance of ideas drawn from numerous traditions including political economy, ecological modernization and cultural theory, amending them as appropriate, in their search to understand the nature and trajectory of rural areas. Up until the 1980s, attention remained largely focused upon agriculture as the primary land-use but increasingly new forms of rural consumption - housing, recreation, nature conservation - have taken centre stage as the primacy of local agricultures has been undermined by reduced state protection and 'new' rural populations which have migrated out from the city. More recently, research has been dominated by the 'cultural turn' with particular emphases upon society-nature relations, interpretations of landscape, marginalised others, and analyses of the relations between representation and practice. In the last decade, a more holistic view of the rural, bringing together different aspects of the two previous themes, has emerged through more politically-oriented studies of rural governance concerned with the functioning of interest groups, participation, protest and the allocation and management of resources. The volume is thus structured into three sections concerned with agriculture and food, the rural, and rural governance. The great majority of the selected papers combine both empirical material - often highly informative case studies - and important conceptual arguments about change in the rural condition that can be linked to ideas being employed elsewhere in Geography and the Social Sciences more generally. These critical reflections have been drawn very largely from research conducted in advanced economies which at least provide some commonality of experience allowing the transfer of ideas between what otherwise might be seen as very differing geographical contexts.
Download or read book Farm Incomes Wealth and Agricultural Policy written by Berkeley Hill and published by CABI. This book was released on 2012 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) has been supporting the incomes of the European Union's agricultural community for half a century. Despite this, there is still no official system in place to track the economic wellbeing of farmers and their families. This book examines the evidence on the overall wealth of farming households, and concludes that in nearly all member states, they are not generally a poor sector of society, with disposable incomes that are similar to, or exceed, the national average. In this updated edition, the author discusses the latest evidence, makes recommendations for gathering better information, and considers the implications for the CAP as we enter the second decade of the 21st century.

Download or read book Policy Reform and Adjustment in the Agricultural Sectors of Developed Countries written by David Blandford and published by CABI. This book was released on 2006 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the policy implications of growing pressures for economic adjustment in the agricultural sectors of developed countries. It starts by describing the recent history of adjustment in the food and agricultural sector and assesses the current and future pressures for adjustments and their implications. Chapters provide empirical evidence on the magnitude of future adjustment in the agricultural sector under a continuation of existing policies and analyze the factors that affect farmers' ability to adjust to economic change. The book concludes by identifying lessons to be learned from recent reforms and evaluating future policy options.
Download or read book Contemporary Property Law written by Paul Jackson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-17 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1999, this is the first of two books based on papers given at the conference organised by the Centre for Property Law at Reading in March 1998 under the title ‘Contemporary Issues in Property Law’. Speakers represented jurisdictions from around the world. Their subjects ranged from the theoretical and jurisprudential to the severely practical. No one who attended the conference – or subsequently reads the papers in this and the following book, Property Law: Current Issues and Debates – can believe in the picture of property law as archetypical, dry as dust, black letter, law. Questions of human rights, changes in social structures, technological developments are all shown to have their impact on property law, calling for careful analysis of the present law and practical proposals for reforms to reflect new developments.
Download or read book Good Practice Guidelines for Agricultural Leasing Arrangements written by N. Ravenscroft and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2001 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The information in this booklet is designed to assist governments and civil society in understanding how agricultural leasing and related agreements work, and what the advantages are of providing an appropriate framework for equitable arrangements that balance the interests of the parties involved - generally the tenant and the landowner. The guidelines therefore deal with the contextual and policy issues surrounding agricultural leasing, but also focus on providing a practical and up-to-date guide and commentary on those issues that need to be considered by both landlord and tenant when negotiating over the leasing of agricultural land.
Download or read book Public Policy in Agriculture written by Ashok K. Mishra and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-08-07 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, developed countries have formulated public policies in agriculture ranging from supporting rural life and farm income to promoting sustainability of food and fibre production. Public Policy in Agriculture: Impact on Labor Supply and Household Income addresses the lack of empirical research in this area. It explores the impact of differing approaches to public policy through a series of international case studies, from the USA and Canada to South Korea, Norway, Slovenia and Taiwan. At a time when much of the developed world has been experiencing budget deficits and policy-makers and the public in general have re-opened the debate on public expenditures in the agricultural sector, this is a timely volume. Mishra, Viaggi and Gomez y Paloma have written an authoritative guide to agricultural public policy that will serve as a reference for academics, researchers, students, and policy-makers.

Download or read book Agriculture People and Policies written by Graham Cox and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-08-06 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The structure and future of Britain’s agriculture sector are the central concerns of this volume, first published in 1986. It critically examines the mystique surrounding agriculture which has done much to underpin the special support the industry had enjoyed. The papers collected here address many of the key questions: What is distinctive about the social and economic organisation of agricultural production? What are the main factors which have influenced policy formation? And how are the policy makers likely to respond to widespread concern about the economic and environmental impact of those policies?
