Book Factors Influencing Design of Protective Clothing for Pesticide Application

Download or read book Factors Influencing Design of Protective Clothing for Pesticide Application written by AJ. Fraser and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Use of protective clothing while applying pesticides to crops is considered a deterrent to dermal exposure. A design for a protective garment and hood for fruit orchard workers was developed at Utah State University. The prototype was manufactured in Gore-Tex, Saranex-laminated Tyvek, and an experimental composite structure. Workers wore all garments and personal work clothing in a field setting. After wearing the prototype on the job for an average 2-h period, fruit orchard workers evaluated the garment for functional designing qualities, sizing, and styling features. The protective suit was favorably rated. The hood design was found to be inadequate. Specifications for the garment needed length adjustment in the sleeve area and additional ease through shoulders. The hood design needs complete revision. The prototype evaluation suggested that desirable styling features and appropriate sizing characteristics definitely increase wearability potential of protective garments.

Book International Code of Conduct on Pesticide Management

Download or read book International Code of Conduct on Pesticide Management written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2018-09-03 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The understanding that some pesticides are more hazardous than others is well established. Recognition of this is reflected by the World Health Organization (WHO) Recommended Classification of Pesticides by Hazard, which was first published in 1975. The document classifies pesticides in one of five hazard classes according to their acute toxicity. In 2002, the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) was introduced, which in addition to acute toxicity also provides classification of chemicals according to their chronic health hazards and environmental hazards.

Book Textiles for Protection

Download or read book Textiles for Protection written by Richard A. Scott and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2005-11-14 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The late twentieth century saw an unprecedented increase in emphasis on protection of the human form. Health and safety at work requires protective textiles for certain jobs and the threat of biological and chemical terrorist attacks is currently a topical issue. The range of hazards and the means of combating them continue to grow and become ever more complex. A consequence of this is the development and exploitation of new textile fibres, structures and clothing systems whose purpose is to provide improved protection, whilst maintaining comfort, efficiency and well being. ?? The first part of Textiles for protection covers materials and design issues. It starts with a chapter explaining legislative and regulative standards for protective textiles. Chapters then go on to comprehensively list the technical fibres and fabrics used, survey the manufacture of yarns and fabrics, explore the emerging field of intelligent textiles and outline the steps required in selecting materials for protective clothing. The factors affecting the design and use of protective clothing are also looked at, with a chapter weighing up fashion against function. Part two deals with general protection requirements and applications. The requirements are considered for protection against: chemicals; ultraviolet radiation; fire and extremes in temperature; microorganisms; electrostatic charges; and ballistic threats. A chapter is also devoted to respiratory protection. The last third of the book is given over to case studies with important chapters on protection for the military and military aviators, fire fighters, workers in the gas and oil industry, motorcyclists and protection against knives and other weapons. ?? Textiles for protection is the fruit of a diverse body of talents, drawing together scientific and technical expertise from around the world, to produce an important source of current knowledge on textile materials and clothing, and their use in the protection of humans in hostile environments. It will be invaluable for all those working in the safety and protective fabrics industry and all concerned in health and safety in a wide variety of industries. It will also be an important work for health and safety workers in the ministry of defence, police and fire service.

Book Engineering Controls and Protective Clothing in the Reduction of Pesticide Exposure to Tractor Drivers

Download or read book Engineering Controls and Protective Clothing in the Reduction of Pesticide Exposure to Tractor Drivers written by C. Lunchick and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reduction of exposure received during occupational use of pesticides is one of the principal strategies available to the Environmental Protection Agency in reducing risk. The Exposure Assessment Branch of the Office of Pesticide Programs has evaluated applicator exposure studies in which pesticides were applied by ground boom or airblast spray methods. The dermal exposure to the applicator in an enclosed tractor cab during ground boom application was estimated to be one-sixth the exposure to the applicator conducting similar operations with an open tractor cab. During airblast applications, exposure to applicators in enclosed vehicles was more than thirtyfold less than to airblast applicators in open vehicles. At present, the major emphasis in reducing applicator exposure to pesticides has been to require the use of protective clothing. Surveys of applicators indicate that they frequently do not use the required protective equipment. The use of engineering controls such as enclosed vehicles is another risk-reduction strategy available to the Agency. This paper reviews the effects on exposure by tractor-cab design and the advantages and disadvantages of protective clothing and engineering controls in reducing total pesticide applicator exposure.
