This, of course, is partly attributable to recent surveys showing a high incidence of family violence in the United States. For example, there are indications that nearly 30% of married women in this country are victims of physical abuse by spouses at some point in their marriage. Further, FBI statistics show that approximately 13% of all homicides are husband-wife killings. Moreover, it has been projected that such figures are likely to increase over the next several years. Consistent with these trends, funding of family violence research by both federal and private agencies has increased. Indeed, federal agencies, such as the National Institute of Mental Health and the National Institute of Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice, have provided considerable support for work in this area. In addition, family violence, particu larly wifebattering, child abuse, and sexual abuse of children has been the focus of media attention at the national level, and has generated intensive interest in both lay and profes sional publications. Moreover, there have been several recent governmental hearings and investigations regarding the prevalence of these problems.

Book excerpt: According to the 2000 Census, Latinos accounted for 12.5% of the US population, or 35.3 million residents-the fastest growing population in the United States. The influence of this large and growing demographic can be seen throughout every academic discipline in the numerous books, journals, and societies on multicultural assessment, counseling, and research that have begun to appear. However, one area of inquiry remains largely unexplored; domestic violence within Latino families. Although it appears that such violence occurs as frequently in Latino families as in Caucasian families, little research has been done on this topic and very few counseling programs explicitly developed for Latino families currently exist. Healing from Violence fills this void. Drawing on a research study of 150 Latino men who completed a year of court-ordered treatment in Southern California, and a four-year pilot study, the authors mix quantitative and qualitative methodology in order to provide counselors with an opportunity to hear first-hand how Latino partner abusive men think about manhood (machismo), interpersonal relationships, (respeto, personalismo, and simpatÌa), and family life (familismo). The authors then use these in-depth portraits to guide counselors in tailoring treatment plans to the specific needs of Latino men. Voices from Healing From Violence: "How should a Mexican man be? The research is based on a sample of 241 known violent men, supplemented with information on 542 others. The analysis considers the men's motives, their social circumstances, their demography, and their feelings about the victims and their own violence. Similar information, obtained from a literature review, is presented for violent wives. Among the causative factors identified are stress, previous learning, and traumatic childhood experiences. The study illuminates the culture of male violence, exploring why violence in active military families is three times as severe as that in civilian families and the fact that religion is an underused resource for addressing the problem. The systems approach to counselling spouse abusers focuses on both persons in a violent relationship and emphasizes multiple causes.
