Hispanics are projected to account for approximately 20% of the U.S. population by 2020 (Sorensen, Brewer, Carroll, and Bryton, 1995). Nearly 40% of this population will be under the age of 19, compared with 29% for the total U.S. population. "Hispanic youth represents the fastest growing segment of the U.S. population, and Hispanics now account for more than a quarter of all new entrants into the labor force" (Sorensen, Brewer, Carroll, and Bryton, 1995, p. 1). This influx of young Hispanic population brings with it many new challenges in education and in the work force. Education is often seen as a catalyst for success in the work place; however, Hispanics' educational success has not kept pace with their increasing population, and they are especially struggling to complete higher education. "Young Hispanic undergraduates are half as likely as their white peers on campus to finish a bachelor's degree, a disparity at least as large as the disparity in finishing high school" (Fry, 2005, p. i). So prevalent is this problem that the Clinton and Bush Administrations both declared the group's improvement of college graduation rates a national priority (Santiago & Brown, 2004). The increasing number of Hispanics only exacerbates their educational problems/difficulties, not to mention the number increasingly impacts the workforce. Cultural and social differences are hypothesized as one reason for the high attrition rate of Hispanic students in secondary and post-secondary education. Hispanics often have strong family ties and work ethic. Their perception of family roles and obligations often propels them into the work force at ages younger than their white counterparts. Ultimately, this role in the work force often prevents them from pursuing education. Many others struggle with high school and have limited adult role models to encourage their educational efforts; this struggle is only worsened in higher education (Fry, 2004). In summation, students with a lack of education often face a lack of opportunity. A lack of education among a particular racial group can have even greater implications, as it can lead to pre-conceived expectations and stereotyping that can inhibit success. Martinez, DeGarmo, & Eddy (2004) state: School success is among the most important correlates of overall physical, mental, and social well-being. In fact, academic functioning is known to be highly related to a host of other important outcomes for youths including substance use, delinquency, and associations with deviant peers...Students who drop out from school experience lower income, greater unemployment, are significantly overrepresented in the adult corrections population, and more likely to require social services during their lifetimes compared to high school graduates. (pp. 128- 129) The purpose of this study is to determine whether social and family factors influence Hispanic students' successful completion of a higher education business program and entry into the workforce. The study examined a longitudinal data set provided by a nationally recognized research institute. Results demonstrated that several social factors are significant in predicting which students persisted in the study of business. Freshmen that readily embraced socializing in the college setting were more likely to persist, and the importance they placed on developing relationships throughout their college career was significant to their persistence of education in this area. As such, the study implies that in order to assist Hispanics to persist in business higher education, educators and institutions should recognize the importance that social relationships have to this set of students. More emphasis should be given to help them embrace the college experience and to help them cultivate and maintain relationships among their peers.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The study was designed to determine the extent to which individual and institutional support variables can predict Latino/a students' successful completion of high school and enrollment in post-secondary institutions in the U.S. Current research suggests that the Hispanic population will constitute approximately 25% of the national workforce in the USA by the year 2050. However, according to the NCES (2002) data, the high level of dropout rates from high school among Latino/a (11.5 for males and 10.3 for females) is alarming. The study examined individual student factors as well as institutional and family variables that may enhance the likelihood of Latino/a students' completion of secondary education and enrollment in post-secondary institutions. Using the 2002-2006 Education Longitudinal Study data, consisting of a sample of 2,217 Latino/a students, the binary logistic regression model identified students' socioeconomic status, their educational aspirations as well as the aspirations of their parents, and school support programs to be significant predictors of high school completion as well as enrollment in post-secondary education. The findings indicate significant differences between the predictive power of the individual and institutional variables on the completion of high school and enrollment in post-secondary institutions of first, second and third generations of Latino/a students in the U.S. In this study, females of first and second generation Latino/a students were found to be two times more likely than males in the same group to complete high school on time. This trend did not apply to third generation female students who were found to be less likely than males of the same group to complete high school on time, with males holding 20% more chances of completion of high school. The presence of institutional based Dropout Prevention Programs was significantly associated with less likelihood of Completion of High School and Enrollment in Post-Secondary Institution across all generation of Latino/a students. The presence of Mentoring Programs was found to significantly predict Completion of High School only for second and third generation of students, and Enrollment in Post-Secondary Institutions only for third generation Latino/a students. The model correctly classified approximately 79 percent of the observations. The findings contribute towards drawing new conclusions regarding Latino/a students' completion of high school and their enrollment in post-secondary institutions in the U.S. The study also informs educational policies regarding school environment and institutional support available for Latino/a students in the U.S. The study recommends that schools should design targeted support programs in order to enhance Latino/a students' success beyond high school. Further research to study the phenomenon of Latino/a students' completion of high school and enrollment in post-secondary institutions, targeting areas with high concentration of Latino/as in the U.S. is recommended.

Book excerpt: Latinos are projected to have the lowest attainment of bachelor's degrees at 12% by the year 2020. For every 100 Latino males in elementary school, only 10 will earn a bachelor's degree compared to 28 Whites and 48 Asians. These figures reflect a disconcerting trend in that it is estimated Hispanics of Mexican origin make up 10% of the overall population in the United States and demographic projections estimate the gap between college education completion and demographic representation will only widen without concerted efforts to correct these outcomes. This phenomenological study examined the success factors and strategies used by five Mexican-American males in Northern California who had earned a bachelor's degree. Four of the five participants were born in Mexico and the remaining participant was born in the United States. The theoretical frameworks for this study include LatCRIT, Cultural-Ecological theory, and the Resiliency theory. The research questions include Research Question #1: How does the family value system, family member roles, and expectations inform the Mexican-American male students' experiences with achieving a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher education? Research Question #2: How does your cultural identity inform your experience in attaining a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher education? Research Question #3: What has been your experience regarding the institutional academic and social resources available to Mexican-American men as they seek to attain a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher education? The seven themes that emerged from the findings were immigration, high school preparedness and programs, social/family support in college, parental understanding of expectations of their sons, the role of high school and college counseling, the management of culture shock from attending a university, and formal programs in college in which the students participated.

Despite the significant body of research that exists on the experiences of Latinas in higher education, there is limited literature focusing on what contributes to the academic success of Latinas pursuing an undergraduate degree at four-year public institutions. Thus, I am interested in identifying the contributing factors of the persistence and ultimately graduation of Latinas from institutions of higher education. By conducting twelve semi-structured interviews and two focus groups with Latina students in their senior year at a four-year institution, the study examined their shared experiences through a critical race theory lens. There are two primary research questions associated with the study; these are: 1.What are the factors that contribute to the persistence of Latina students attending a four-year public institution of higher education? 2. What are the institutional resources in place that provide support to Latina students while they pursue their undergraduate degree? The findings of the study can then provide an insight in what can be done to support Latina students during their baccalaureate attainment journey.
