Book Factors Associated with Non resident African American Father Involvement and the Effectiveness of Interventions to the Problem

Download or read book Factors Associated with Non resident African American Father Involvement and the Effectiveness of Interventions to the Problem written by Sara Felix and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the year it has been a challenge to find factors and interventions to address Father Involvement. The main purpose of this thesis project was to examine the factors associated father involvement as well as the intervention to address the problem. The thesis project is guided by two research questions: 1) What factors are associated with Father Involvement among Non-Resident African American Fathers? 2) What effects do fatherhood programs, in comparison to co-parenting programs, have on father involvement among non-resident African American Fathers? Specifically, the literature review was developed but not limited to peer-reviewed journals, quasi-experimental design, and qualitative data. The literature found that Father Involvement is positively influenced by Fathers Characteristics, Childhood Characteristics and Contextual Sources of Stress and Support. Additionally, the literature found fatherhood programs were effective in addressing father involvement through reading to their child, participating in school activities, and father-child communication. Moreover, the Chicago Parent Program was developed to address father involvement at day care centers and it was found to be effective on father involvement through child play and fathers relying on corporal punishment. The high prevalence of mental health, specifically, depression on non-resident father involvement suggests that there is an ongoing need in research to address such issue.

Book Factors Associated with Father Involvement Among Nonresident African American Fathers and Current Interventions Effectiveness in Enhancing Father Involvement

Download or read book Factors Associated with Father Involvement Among Nonresident African American Fathers and Current Interventions Effectiveness in Enhancing Father Involvement written by Nicole Patricia Soto and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonresident father involvement is a widespread issue that impacts children among all racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic statuses. More than half of all African American children are raised by single mothers. Studies have shown the consequence of single parenting and their correlation to parental stress and negative outcomes for young African American children. This thesis project sought to enhance the understanding of the determinants of nonresident fathering among African American fathers. This project was guided by two research questions: 1) what factors are associated with involvement among nonresident African American fathers? 2) how do father-specific intervention programs compare to two-parent intervention programs in enhancing involvement among nonresident African American fathers? This thesis project was conducted using 46 peer-reviewed studies from the California State University of Los Angeles online journal library. The databases used to obtain articles were: EBSCOhost, ProQuest, SAGE, and Springer Standard Collection. Results indicated that 1) father characteristics including developmental history, mental health disorder, and parenting self-efficacy, 2) child characteristics such as child's age and child temperament/behavioral issues, and 3) contextual stress and support including co-parental alliance and co-parental relationship are factors linked to nonresident father involvement. Results revealed that father-specific intervention programs are effective in improving parenting behaviors, competence, and strengthen the father-child relationship. Results showed that two-parent intervention programs are effective in enhancing the co-parental relationship, improving communication skills, and decision-making abilities. The implications for future research suggest studying the barriers to nonresident fathering.

Book excerpt: This book offers a broader, more positive picture of African American fathers. Featuring case studies of African-descended fathers, this edited volume brings to life the achievements and challenges of being a black father in America. Leading scholars and practitioners provide unique insight into this understudied population. Short-sighted social policies which do not encourage father involvement are critically examined and the value of father engagement is promoted. The problems associated with the absence of a father are also explored. The second edition features an increased emphasis on: the historical issues confronting African descended fathers the impact of health issues on Black fathers and their children the need for therapeutic interventions to aid in the healing of fathers and their children the impact of an Afrikan-centered fathering approach and the need for research which considers systemic problems confronting African American fathers community focused models that provide new ideas for (re)connecting absent fathers learning tools including reflective questions and a conclusion in each chapter and more theory and research throughout the book. Part I provides a historical overview of African descended fathers including their strengths and shortcomings over the years. Next, contributors share their personal stories including one from a communal father working with underserved youth and two others that highlight the impact of absent fathers. Then, the research on father-daughter relationships is examined including the impact of father absence on daughters and on gender identity. This section concludes with a discussion of serving adolescents in the foster care system. Part II focuses on the importance of a two-parent home, communal fathering, and equalitarian households. Cultural implications and barriers to relationships are also explored. This section concludes with a discussion of the struggles Black men face with role definitions. The book concludes with a discussion of the impact of adoption and health issues on Black fathers and their children, and the need for more effective therapeutic interventions that include a perspective centered in the traditions and cultures of Afrika in learning to become a father. Book Factors Associated with Fathers Involvement with Their Children Among Black Fathers with Criminal Records

Download or read book Factors Associated with Fathers Involvement with Their Children Among Black Fathers with Criminal Records written by Branden Anthony McLeod and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The benefits of fathers' involvement in their children's lives are well documented. However, the effects of over incarceration have contributed to disbanded family bonds, especially, Black families. Spells of incarceration disrupt family relationships and having a criminal record results in formerly incarcerated men being jobless and unable to financially contribute to their families. Society continues to reinforce traditional conceptualizations of father involvement as being breadwinning and resident fathers. However father involvement is complex, particularly, within contemporary family structures (Jones & Mosher, 2013). This study analyzed factors associated with father involvement with their children among African American Males with criminal records. Father involvement was conceptualized using Lamb, Pleck, Charnov, and Levine's (1985, 1987, 2000) Threefold Typology, which included fathers' level of engagement, accessibility, and responsibility with their children. These three components of father involvement were the dependent variables. Secondary analysis of the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing study was used for the analyses. The Fragile Families study was a non-experimental design, and follows a panel or cohort of 4,700 children born to unwed (3,600) and married (1,100) parents. Among Black fathers with criminal records, this study explored relationships between fathers' involvement, time served in jail/prison, family dyads, and socio-demographic variables, such as educational status and employment status.

Book Exploring Correlates and Intervention Programs That Can Improve Father Involvement Among Low Income Families A Systematic Literature Review

Download or read book Exploring Correlates and Intervention Programs That Can Improve Father Involvement Among Low Income Families A Systematic Literature Review written by Douglas Louis Tu and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this project is to analyze the current body of literature that exists on father involvement. The National Fatherhood Initiative has stated that as of 2014, about 17 million children live without fathers. This thesis consists of two literature reviews drawn from scholarly articles pulled from online databases. The first asks among low-income fathers, both resident and nonresident, which factors or correlates are associated with levels of father involvement? The second asks what effect do father-focused interventions, in comparison to co-parenting interventions and marriage interventions, have on father involvement in low-income families? It was found that the most prevalent correlates associated with involvement include the father's relationship to the child's mother, his relationship with his own father, culture, gender and substance abuse. Additionally, the current research on interventions has typically fallen under one of the following categories: father-focused, co-parenting or marriage. Interventions that were the most successful in increasing the father's level of involvement either improved his relationship with his child's mother or connected him with an educator, caseworker or social service. This project provides a foundation for future researchers by highlighting the gaps in the current literature as well providing recommendations for future studies.

Book Clinical and Educational Interventions with Fathers

Download or read book Clinical and Educational Interventions with Fathers written by Jay Fagan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-24 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Call on men's hidden strengths to help them become responsible fathers in even the most challenging circumstances!Clinical and Educational Interventions with Fathers gives you fresh approaches for effective interventions with fathers. Whether by calling on their faith to help them deal with the complexities of fatherhood or offering high-tech interventions on the Internet, these techniques help men find their strengths, maintain their masculinity, and learn to guide, nurture, and discipline with love and responsibility. Instead of thinking of fathers as deficient, the book emphasizes finding fathers’strengths and potentials for growth. It also respects the diversity of parenting styles among fathers from various ethnic, racial, and class backgrounds. No man wants to be a bad father. Nevertheless, many men in our culture do not know how to care for the children they beget. Trapped by stereotypes of masculine behavior and deprived of positive role models, they find themselves trying to do the challenging work of fatherhood without the necessary resources, information, or support.Clinical and Educational Interventions with Fathers offers positive approaches to helping men become responsible fathers, including: designing special techniques and programs to help fathers in prison and other challenging circumstances helping fathers manage anger developing therapeutic support groups for African-American men offering Web-based support for fathers training staff to recognize and respond to fathers’unique needs finding legal tools to support fathers’rights Reaching fathers has become an ever more urgent priority for practitioners as family structure and family life change. Traditional social-service programs for mothers tend not to work well with men's very different needs and attitudes. Yet very little has been published on successful interventions with fathers. Clinical and Educational Interventions with Fathers fills that gap and suggests promising new directions for further research in this field. By offering positive, tested ways to help men become responsible fathers, this volume will help you improve their lives and the lives of their sons and daughters.

Book The Complexity of Nonresident Father Involvement in Low income Families

Download or read book The Complexity of Nonresident Father Involvement in Low income Families written by Yoshie Sano and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two studies of this dissertation examined mothers' perspectives of nonresident fathers' involvement in low-income families. The overall goal of these studies was to gain a more comprehensive understanding of nonresident fathers' involvement and its effect on family well-being. In the first study I applied a relatively new methodology, zero-inflated negative binomial regression, to overcome the methodological shortcomings of previous studies. The models (N=1215) examined what factors predicted two aspects, presence and level, of father-child contact and paternal engagement. Different factors were found to influence presence of father-child contact and frequency of contact. Similarly, different factors predicted presence of paternal engagement and level of engagement. Thus, a nonresident father's decision to be involved in his child's life may be a fundamentally different decision than how much he is involved. In addition, parents' positive relationship--romantic relationship and higher quality of relationship--was found to be the major predictor influencing all outcome variables. It appears that a positive co-parental relationship is central to nonresident father involvement. In my second study, I qualitatively examined rural mothers' perceptions of nonresident fathers' involvement (N=83). Specifically, I investigated whether mothers are really "gatekeeping" the father involvement, as suggested by previous research. There was no simple yes/no answer to this question, rather, results suggested that whether a mother acts as a gatekeeper of her children depends on her unique circumstances. Mothers, by at large, wanted the nonresident fathers to be involved in their children's lives and to perform responsible fathering, but mothers' expectations of the fathers' roles may be narrowly defined and, therefore, easily violated. Some mothers did intentionally refuse or limit father-child contact in cases where they believed that father involvement would threaten the safety of their children. In these cases, "gatekeeping" behavior can be viewed as one survival strategy for the mothers. The two studies presented here collectively demonstrate the complexity of non-resident father's involvement and provide insight that will be useful for policy targeted to low-income families.

Book The Psychology of Black Boys and Adolescents

Download or read book The Psychology of Black Boys and Adolescents written by Kirkland C. Vaughans and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2014-06-30 with total page 646 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on personal insights and research-based knowledge, this important work facilitates understanding of the psychological struggles of young African American males and offers ameliorative strategies. Despite examples set by successful black men in all walks of life, the truth remains that a disproportionate number of black boys and young men underperform at school, suffer from PTSD, and, too often, find themselves on a pathway to jail. The two-volume The Psychology of Black Boys and Adolescents marks the first attempt to catalog the many psychological influences that can stack the deck against black male children—and to suggest interventions. Bringing together an expansive collection of new and classic research from a wide variety of disciplines, this set sheds light on the complex circumstances faced by young black men in the United States. Contributions by authors Kirkland Vaughans and Warren Spielberg contain insights from the groundbreaking "Brotherman" study, conducted over a ten-year period to report on the lives and psychological challenges of over a hundred African American boys and their families. Among the myriad issues studied in this set are the often-negative expectations of society, the influence of gangs, and the impact of racism and poverty. Of equal importance, the work explores culturally specific ways to engage families, youths, communities, and policymakers in the development of healthy, safe, educated boys who will become whole and successful adults.

Book Black Fathers in Contemporary American Society

Download or read book Black Fathers in Contemporary American Society written by Obie Clayton and published by Russell Sage Foundation. This book was released on 2003-08-28 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The majority of African American children live in homes without their fathers, but the proportion of African American children living in intact, two-parent families has risen significantly since 1995. Black Fathers in Contemporary American Society looks at father absence from two sides, offering an in-depth analysis of how the absence of African American fathers affects their children, their relationships, and society as a whole, while countering the notion that father absence and family fragmentation within the African American community is inevitable. Editors Obie Clayton, Ronald B. Mincy, and David Blankenhorn lead a diverse group of contributors encompassing a range of disciplines and ideological perspectives who all agree that father absence among black families is one of the most pressing social problems today. In part I, the contributors offer possible explanations for the decline in marriage among African American families. William Julius Wilson believes that many men who live in the inner city no longer consider marriage an option because their limited economic prospects do not enable them to provide for a family. Part II considers marriage from an economic perspective, emphasizing that it is in part a wealth-producing institution. Maggie Gallagher points out that married people earn, invest, and save more than single people, and that when marriage rates are low in a community, it is the children who suffer most. In part III, the contributors discuss policies to reduce absentee fatherhood. Wornie Reed demonstrates how public health interventions, such as personal development workshops and work-related skill-building services, can be used to address the causes of fatherlessness. Wade Horn illustrates the positive results achieved by fatherhood programs, especially when held early in a man's life. In the last chapter, Enola Aird notes that from 1995 to 2000, the proportion of African American children living in two-parent, married couple homes rose from 34.8 to 38.9 percent; a significant increase indicating the possible reversal of the long-term shift toward black family fragmentation. Black Fathers in Contemporary American Society provides an in-depth look at a problem affecting millions of children while offering proof that the trend of father absence is not irrevocable.

Book Outside Looking in

Download or read book Outside Looking in written by Chaundra Reniece Creekmur and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this transcendental, phenomenological study was to understand the perceptions of non-residential African American fathers’ roles in the academic process of their male children in in a suburban city in the Eastern region of Georgia. The following questions guided the study: (a) What roles do non-residential African American fathers play in the academic process of their male children? (b) What factors shape non-residential African American fathers’ perceptions of their roles in the academic process of their male children? (c) What do non-residential African American fathers perceive as the value of their involvement in the academic process of their male children? The participants were non-residential African American fathers of sons in grades 3-12. Self-efficacy and the critical race theory were the theories that guided this study. Data was collected through interviews, surveys, and focus groups. Data was analyzed using Moustakas’ (1994) guidelines for transcendental phenomenology. After interview transcription, emerging themes were notated and followed up by two focus group sessions. Results of the study revealed that fathers, in the face of mother gate-keeping, persisted to rely on their sons’ mothers for information pertaining to their sons’ academic process. It was noted that participants, in some form, were involved in progress monitoring. The study also prevailed that, father educational attainment was not a determining factor for their involvement. In summary, these fathers, despite numerous difficulties, have been diligent in their efforts to maintain active roles in the lives of their sons.
