The estimated 12-month and lifetime prevalence values for AUD are 13.9% and 29.1%, respectively, with approximately half of individuals with lifetime AUD having a severe disorder. AUD and its sequelae also account for significant excess mortality and cost the United States more than $200 billion annually. Despite its high prevalence and numerous negative consequences, AUD remains undertreated. In fact, fewer than 1 in 10 individuals in the United States with a 12-month diagnosis of AUD receive any treatment. Nevertheless, effective and evidence-based interventions are available, and treatment is associated with reductions in the risk of relapse and AUD-associated mortality. The American Psychiatric Association Practice Guideline for the Pharmacological Treatment of Patients With Alcohol Use Disorder seeks to reduce these substantial psychosocial and public health consequences of AUD for millions of affected individuals. The guideline focuses specifically on evidence-based pharmacological treatments for AUD in outpatient settings and includes additional information on assessment and treatment planning, which are an integral part of using pharmacotherapy to treat AUD. In addition to reviewing the available evidence on the use of AUD pharmacotherapy, the guideline offers clear, concise, and actionable recommendation statements, each of which is given a rating that reflects the level of confidence that potential benefits of an intervention outweigh potential harms. The guideline provides guidance on implementing these recommendations into clinical practice, with the goal of improving quality of care and treatment outcomes of AUD.

Excessive alcohol consumption has been associated with a variety of negative health consequences, acute or chronic, both the alcohol user and for society to which this drinker is inserted, ranging from injuries resulting from traffic accidents to diseases chronic such as cancer and cardiovascular disease. This book discusses alcohol consumption patterns, influences and health effects. The first chapter describes the epidemiology of global alcohol consumption, classification patterns of alcohol consumption, the influences and the deleterious effects of excessive consumption of these licit drugs can cause to the human body, and finally, the nutritional implications of this consumption. Chapter Two elucidates the risk factors associated with binge drinking from different approaches and presents the advances in prevention strategies and intervention programs for adolescents and young adults. Chapter Three discusses underlying theoretical constructs associated with alcohol-related group norms, outlines the empirical impact of social norms on binge drinking behavior, and presents secondary data analyses of two distinct nationally representative datasets. GENACIS is a major collaborative effort to highlight the relationship between gender and alcohol issues, seek greater understanding of male and female differences in patterns of drinking and alcohol problems, and assess the public health implications of drinking by men and women. Each of the eight country-specific chapters in this volume (Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica, India, Mexico, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, Uganda) consists of a review of alcohol and alcohol policy in the country and an analysis of social and health problems associated with drinking. For several of the countries, this is the first systematic attempt to provide a broad insight into gender issues and how they relate to alcohol problems. In an era of growing consumption and increasing burden of alcohol-related problems in many developing countries, the findings reported in this book and the GENACIS project in general, are a major step forward in the understanding of the role of gender in alcohol behaviours.
