Urban planners have been focusing on the need to reduce car dependence and promote more sustainable transportation alternatives. Automobile dependence is a concern for many reasons including congestion in urban areas, pollution, and environmental damages caused by pollution. Switching to more sustainable and environmentally friendly transportation modes such as public transit is likely to be an effective solution to most of these problems. As an alternative to the private car, public transit is an efficient means to move large numbers of people within cities, and transit systems play an important role in combating traffic congestion, reducing carbon emissions, and promoting compact, sustainable urban communities (Taylor et al., 2009). In recent years, the introduction of intelligent transit information systems (ITIS) applications that provide real-time information to transit users created a new hope for increased transit ridership, however, its impact in facilitating increased Transit Usage is not clear yet. This study explores the factors affecting transit ridership including ITIS and selects the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) as a case in a large metropolitan setting for this research. In order to achieve this purpose, the research examines the factors affecting rail, bus, and transit ridership. In addition, this study attempts to fill some of the gaps that exist in the literature by exploring the impact of intelligent transit information systems (ITIS) on transit ridership, and how its availability has affected transit ridership since 2012. The study adopts a monthly time series perspective (2007 to 2017) to enable the researcher to examine changes in transit ridership over a 10-year period and the incremental exposure to ITIS technology. This enables the research to capture any changes in ridership over this 10-year period, few years before to few years after the implementation of ITIS transit applications, in addition to any seasonal changes. Most previous studies of transit ridership have not included ITIS as one of the variables thought to influence transit ridership. Therefore, the disparities among the findings of empirical research completed to date point to the necessity for further study. This study addresses these shortcomings by exploring multiple factors measuring population, technology, geography, and socioeconomic characteristics. This is examined through using Time Series / Multiple Regression methods on the dataset to estimate the relationship between the models' variables to answer the research questions related to demand for transit ridership in the DFW area. In this type of research quite frequently, one is interested in interpreting the effect of a percent change of an independent variable on the dependent variable, which we can achieve through a double-log (log-log) model. As such, the elasticity of demand for transit with respect to some of the factors in the model such as percent change in fare, income or the research question variable, ITIS usage, are explored and policy implications out of these elasticities are discussed. Finally, it has been argued that ITIS reduces negative aspects and cost of using transit through providing information, saving time and other attributes, and makes transit more competitive with the automobile. Therefore, it behooves us to include also some measure of auto ridership in the models. In order to measure the responsiveness of demand for transit to a relative change in the price related to auto usage, we examine cross-price elasticity of demand for transit and how cross-price elasticity of demand could help us in measuring possible shifts from car to transit as an effect of ITIS usage. We think this research provides a significant contribution to transportation planning literature.

Book excerpt: Public transit agencies often struggle with service reliability issues; when a bus or train does not arrive on time, passengers become frustrated and may be less likely to choose transit for future trips. To address reliability problems, transit authorities increasingly provide real-time vehicle location and arrival information to riders via web enabled and mobile devices. Although prior studies have found several benefits of offering this information to passengers, researchers have had difficulty determining if real-time information affects ridership levels. Therefore, the objective of this dissertation is to quantify the impact of real-time information on public transit ridership. Statistical and econometric methods were used to analyze passenger behavior in three American cities that share a common real-time information platform: New York City, Tampa, and Atlanta. New York City was the setting for a natural experiment in which real-time bus information was gradually launched on a borough-by-borough basis over a three year period. Panel regression techniques were used to evaluate route-level bus ridership while controlling for changes in transit service, fares, local socioeconomic conditions, weather, and other factors. In Tampa, a behavioral experiment was performed with a before-after control group design in which access to real-time bus information was the treatment variable and web-based surveys measured behavior changes over a three month period. In Atlanta, a methodology to combine smart card fare collection data with web-based survey responses was developed to quantify changes in transit travel of individual riders in a before-after study. In summary, each study utilized different data sources and quantitative methods to assess changes in transit ridership. The results varied between cities and suggest that the impact of real-time information on transit travel is greatest in locations that have high levels of transit service. These findings have immediate implications for decision-makers at transit agencies, who often face pressure to increase ridership with limited resources.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Public transit service is a promising transportation mode because of its potential to address urban sustainability. Current ridership of public transit, however, is very low in most urban regions, particularly those in the United States. This woeful transit ridership can be attributed to many factors, among which poor service quality is key. Given this, there is a need for transit planning and analysis to improve service quality. Traditionally, spatially aggregate data are utilized in transit analysis and planning. Examples include data associated with the census, zip codes, states, etc. Few studies, however, address the influences of spatially aggregate data on transit planning results. In this research, previous studies in transit planning that use spatially aggregate data are reviewed. Next, problems associated with the utilization of aggregate data, the so-called modifiable areal unit problem (MAUP), are detailed and the need for fine resolution data to support public transit planning is argued. Fine resolution data is generated using intelligent interpolation techniques with the help of remote sensing imagery. In particular, impervious surface fraction, an important socio-economic indicator, is estimated through a fully constrained linear spectral mixture model using Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) data within the metropolitan area of Columbus, Ohio in the United States. Four endmembers, low albedo, high albedo, vegetation, and soil are selected to model heterogeneous urban land cover. Impervious surface fraction is estimated by analyzing low and high albedo endmembers. With the derived impervious surface fraction, three spatial interpolation methods, spatial regression, dasymetric mapping, and cokriging, are developed to interpolate detailed population density. Results suggest that cokriging applied to impervious surface is a better alternative for estimating fine resolution population density. With the derived fine resolution data, a multiple route maximal covering/shortest path (MRMCSP) model is proposed to address the tradeoff between public transit service quality and access coverage in an established bus-based transit system. Results show that it is possible to improve current transit service quality by eliminating redundant or underutilized service stops. This research illustrates that fine resolution data can be efficiently generated to support urban planning, management and analysis. Further, this detailed data may necessitate the development of new spatial optimization models for use in analysis.
