Book Factors Affecting Child Mortality in Bangladesh

Download or read book Factors Affecting Child Mortality in Bangladesh written by Rifat Zahan and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-06 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Infant and child mortality rate is still high in Bangladesh. The study of infant and child mortality in developing countries is an important issue in public health programs. This book deals with the extension of the Cox's proportional hazards model that allows for heterogeneity due to omitted covariates using frailty (random effect) approach. The covariates involve some key determinants of children's time-to-death event. At first the Cox's proportional hazards model and frailty model were fitted with the help of Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey (BDHS) 2007 data and get the estimates and corresponding standard errors of the regression coefficients. Then the application of Bayesian techniques on Cox's proportional hazards model (Kalbfleisch 1978) and frailty model (Clayton, 1991) were proposed. The frequentist parameters' results were incorporated in the Bayesian methodology as the prior information. Also the frequentist confidence interval and the Bayesian credible interval of the regression parameters and frailty component were obtained.

Book Factors Affecting Child Injury in Bangladesh

Download or read book Factors Affecting Child Injury in Bangladesh written by Siddikur Rahman, Md and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Child injury is an emerging public health issue in Bangladesh. Today, the biggest killer of Bangladeshi children between age 1 and 18 is injury. The progress Bangladesh has made in the reduction of child mortality from infectious diseases has revealed that accidents and injuries are now a major concern for child survival. Reducing injury mortality has been highlighted as a strategic intervention for Bangladesh to achieve the fourth millennium development goal (MDG) to reduce the under-5 mortality rate to 51 per 1,000 live births by 2015. In this study an attempt has been made to identify the different factors associated with child injury occurrence in Bangladesh. The children are defined in this study as infants and children of all ages, up to their 18th birthday (0-17 years old). This study employs mainly statistical methods to identify the factors affecting child injury in Bangladesh using some sophisticated techniques so that policy makers can make the recommendations for the policy implementation to reduce child injuries and identify the ways of controlling injuries and prescribe better injury prevention strategy.

Download or read book Verbal Autopsy Standards written by World Health Organization and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2007 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dearth of reliable data on the levels and causes of mortality in poorer regions of the world continues to plague efforts to build a solid evidence base for health policy, planning, monitoring, and evaluation. As a partial solution to this problem, verbal autopsy has become the primary source of information about causes of death in populations lacking vital registration and medical certification. The purpose of this manual is to disseminate new standard data collection and cause-of-death assignment resources for verbal autopsy, and to provide some general guidelines for their use. The manual includes verbal autopsy questionnaires for three age groups, cause-of-death certification and coding guidelines for applying the International statistical classification of diseases and related health problems (ICD-10) to verbal autopsy and a cause-of-death list for verbal autopsy with corresponding ICD-10 codes. These resources are the consensus products of a three-year effort by an expert group led by WHO, consisting of researchers, data users, and other stakeholders under the sponsorship of the Health Metrics Network. They are intended to serve the needs of various users and producers of mortality information, including researchers, policy-makers, program managers, and evaluators.

Book Disease Control Priorities Third Edition Volume 2

Download or read book Disease Control Priorities Third Edition Volume 2 written by Robert Black and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2016-04-11 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The evaluation of reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child health (RMNCH) by the Disease Control Priorities, Third Edition (DCP3) focuses on maternal conditions, childhood illness, and malnutrition. Specifically, the chapters address acute illness and undernutrition in children, principally under age 5. It also covers maternal mortality, morbidity, stillbirth, and influences to pregnancy and pre-pregnancy. Volume 3 focuses on developments since the publication of DCP2 and will also include the transition to older childhood, in particular, the overlap and commonality with the child development volume. The DCP3 evaluation of these conditions produced three key findings: 1. There is significant difficulty in measuring the burden of key conditions such as unintended pregnancy, unsafe abortion, nonsexually transmitted infections, infertility, and violence against women. 2. Investments in the continuum of care can have significant returns for improved and equitable access, health, poverty, and health systems. 3. There is a large difference in how RMNCH conditions affect different income groups; investments in RMNCH can lessen the disparity in terms of both health and financial risk.

Book The Consequences of Maternal Morbidity and Maternal Mortality

Download or read book The Consequences of Maternal Morbidity and Maternal Mortality written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-03-21 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1997 the committee published Reproductive Health in Developing Countries: Expanding Dimensions, Building Solutions, a report that recommended actions to improve reproductive health for women around the world. As a follow- on activity, the committee proposed an investigation into the social and economic consequences of maternal morbidity and mortality. With funding from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and the U.S. Agency for International Development, the committee organized a workshop on this topic in Washington, DC, on October 19-20, 1998. The Consequences of Maternal Morbidity and Maternal Mortality assesses the scientific knowledge about the consequences of maternal morbidity and mortality and discusses key findings from recent research. Although the existing research on this topic is scarce, the report drew on similar literature on the consequences of adult disease and death, especially the growing literature on the socioeconomic consequences of AIDS, to look at potential consequences from maternal disability and death.

Book Under Five Child Mortality and Socio Economic Inequalities in Bangladesh

Download or read book Under Five Child Mortality and Socio Economic Inequalities in Bangladesh written by Rafia Nur Hride and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2011-09 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bangladesh has been able to reduce under five-child mortality (U5CM) rate at 88 per thousand live births as reported in BDHS 2004. However, Bangladesh is committed to reduce U5CM to 44 per thousand live births in 2015 (one-third of U5CM of 133 per thousand live births of 1990, midyear 1991) to meet Millennium Development Goal 4 for child survival(MDG 4). The objective of this study is to determine risk factors and socioeconomic inequalities in U5CM in Bangladesh. This study analyzed data from the Bangladesh Demographic and Health Surveys done during the period of 1999-2003 (published in 2004) to generate estimates of risk factors and socioeconomic inequalities of mortality in children younger than 5 years.

Book Education Achievements and School Efficiency in Rural Bangladesh

Download or read book Education Achievements and School Efficiency in Rural Bangladesh written by Shahidur R. Khandker and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two of the largest World Bank investment projects in Bangladesh are the general education project and the female secondary scholarship and assistance project. This paper evaluates the expected results of these educational projects using the household and school survey data recently collected in rural Bangladesh. Bangladesh spends only 2 percent of its GNP on education, compared to 3.2 percent in an average low-income country and 6 percent in an average high-income country. Low investment in education results in low literacy (only 35 percent), which in turn results in low productivity, low incomes, poor health, and, above all, high population growth. To counter these trends, Bangladesh has invested substantially in the education sector in recent years, with the help of the World Bank and other donor agencies. The objective of this investment has been to improve both the quality and quantity of education, especially among the female population. The general education and female secondary school assistance projects are, in particular, geared to promote better access to primary and secondary education, as well as higher school participation and educational attainment. Based on the rural household and school survey data on both supply and demand factors, this report concludes that school interventions such as more and better schools, better trained and educated teachers, more female teachers, and better water and sanitation facilities in schools promote literacy and improve school participation and school attainment rates. Independent of school-level interventions, complementary investments in village infrastructure (roads and electricity) also have beneficial effects on educational outcomes. The effects of all these interventions are more pronounced for girls than for boys. Contains 28 data tables and figures. (Author/TD)

Download or read book Reducing Birth Defects written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2003-10-27 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each year more than 4 million children are born with birth defects. This book highlights the unprecedented opportunity to improve the lives of children and families in developing countries by preventing some birth defects and reducing the consequences of others. A number of developing countries with more comprehensive health care systems are making significant progress in the prevention and care of birth defects. In many other developing countries, however, policymakers have limited knowledge of the negative impact of birth defects and are largely unaware of the affordable and effective interventions available to reduce the impact of certain conditions. Reducing Birth Defects: Meeting the Challenge in the Developing World includes descriptions of successful programs and presents a plan of action to address critical gaps in the understanding, prevention, and treatment of birth defects in developing countries. This study also recommends capacity building, priority research, and institutional and global efforts to reduce the incidence and impact of birth defects in developing countries.
