Book The Economic Role of International Trade in Canada s Future

Download or read book The Economic Role of International Trade in Canada s Future written by Caroline Mutuku and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2018-07-18 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Document from the year 2018 in the subject Economics - Foreign Trade Theory, Trade Policy, grade: 1, , language: English, abstract: In the past decade, the Canadian economy experienced stagnation owing to the existence of unfavorable economic trends in the regional and global economy. It is argued that Canadian economy slipped into a recession because of the challenges faced in building its competitiveness in the international trade network. For instance, Canada has been relying on regional trade, especially with the United States which accounts for the highest portion of international exports, and this aspect is linked to the crippling of the Canadian economy. Therefore, internationalization of trade activities appears to be one of the most reliable approaches for aligning the country’s economy with the 21st century global economy. This approach will enable the country to increase its export levels which will, in turn, increase the Gross Domestic Product of Canada. This is probably why Laurin (2013) remarks “There is a growing perception that Canadian businesses need to turn their attention to overseas markets and shift their business strategies to adapt a new global environment’. As such, the current approach by Canadian premiers to establish trade agreements with international trade partners seem to be an amicable answer to economic tantrums in the Canadian economy. The new approach bears significant economic roles in the Canadian economic prospects in the future. According to the Council of the Federation, it is apparent that “strengthening Canada’s trade and investment linkages with the global economy will mean addressing challenges and taking advantage of new opportunities”. This aspect is reaffirmed by Passaris (2013) who observes “International trade is both the heartbeat and the lifeblood of the Canadian economy. In fact, international trade has empowered Canada to side-step economic theory”.Therefore, this paper will give an overview on the economic role of international trade in Canada’s future.

Book excerpt: From the Introduction: Our approach to this study is as follows. In Chapter 2 we consider Canadian merchandise trade in relation to other current-account items and to gross national expenditure. Chapter 3 examines the changes in commodity composition and sources of imports as well as the changes in composition and destintation of exports. We devote Chapter 4 to a consideration of a limited number of short-run influences on Canadian trade patterns, whereas in the following chapter the factor-endowment characteristics of trade in manufacture are examined. In Chapters 6, 7, and 8 we assess the relative significance of several long-run determinants of manufactured exports and imports and summarize a number of major conclusions of this study.

Book The Provinces and Canadian Foreign Trade Policy

Download or read book The Provinces and Canadian Foreign Trade Policy written by Christopher J. Kukucha and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past thirty years, international trade agreements have focused increasingly on areas of provincial jurisdiction. In The Provinces and Canadian Foreign Trade Policy, Kukucha argues that Canadian provinces have maintained a level of autonomy in response to these developments, sometimes even influencing Canada's global trade relations and the evolution of international norms and standards. The first comprehensive review of provincial foreign trade policy in Canada, the book highlights the convergence of debates related to federalism, Canadian foreign policy, and the global political economy as they are played out in the negotiation and implementation of international trade agreements. It will be of interest to students and practitioners of political science, public policy, and economics.

Book International Trade Agreements and Agriculture

Download or read book International Trade Agreements and Agriculture written by Caroline Mutuku and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2018-07-09 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2018 in the subject Economics - Foreign Trade Theory, Trade Policy, grade: 1, , language: English, abstract: The Canadian economy relies heavily on international trade especially exports; thus, agriculture and agri-food sectors play significant roles in the growth and development of the Canadian economy. Remarkably, the Canadian agricultural industry has achieved a competitive edge in the regional and global markets. This phenomenon is attributable to a number of factors including strong trade partnerships, high-quality and safe agricultural products, and its geographic proximity to the United States. In the past four decades, agricultural productivity have increased significantly due to the development of large farms, increased food processing and well-established distribution firms. However, it is evident that international trade liberalization has boosted agricultural productivity. Therefore, it is apparent that free trade agreements bear significant benefits to the Canadian agricultural industry. Some of the major benefits of the free trade agreements to the Canadian agricultural industry are the increase of agricultural exports, tariff elimination, opening of new markets, expansion of the agricultural industry, and the creation of employment opportunities for Canadians in the agricultural sector. Therefore, this paper provides a comprehensive overview on the benefits of free trade agreements on the Canadian Agricultural industry.

Book Redesigning Canadian Trade Policies for New Global Realities

Download or read book Redesigning Canadian Trade Policies for New Global Realities written by Stephen Tapp and published by Art of the State. This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "International trade and investment are central to economic prosperity. But new global realities, including rising antitrade sentiment, are challenging long-held policy approaches in these areas. With the global trading system at a critical juncture, now is the time to examine new trade realities and explore appropriate responses. In this volume, the culmination of a comprehensive interdisciplinary research initiative, the Institute for Research on Public Policy has brought together groundbreaking contributions from more than thirty experts in eight different countries. Together, they analyze how longer-term changes and emerging trends in international commerce, technology and economic power are affecting Canada, and what these changes mean for public policy. The authors take an in-depth, firm-level look at Canada's trade, and assess its integration in global value chains. They provide a rigorous analytical framework, supported by new empirical evidence, that will help readers better understand the global economy. Among the topics they examine are the new business models driving the more fragmented and global nature of production; the technological developments that are allowing new traders to expand their reach; and the shift in economic activity toward emerging markets that is dispersing power and raising new challenges for trade negotiations. The editors' conclusion distills the research findings into a forward-looking policy agenda for more inclusive trade." --

Book Lecture Notes In International Trade Theory Classical Trade And Applications

Download or read book Lecture Notes In International Trade Theory Classical Trade And Applications written by Larry S Karp and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2021-12-08 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lecture Notes in International Trade Theory covers classical international trade models (including the Ricardian, Ricardo Viner, and Heckscher-Ohlin-Samuelson models). The course is designed for M.Sc. and first year PhD students. It relies on both graphical and analytic methods, requiring only intermediate microeconomics and a solid grounding in calculus. The material emphasizes 'second-best' settings, where markets are imperfect. The goal is to equip students with a good enough understanding of open-economy general equilibrium relations that they understand how distortions ripple across different markets, e.g. commodity and factor markets. The Author applies these ideas to environmental and natural resource problems, including pollution 'leakage' (where pollution reductions in one country are offset by trading partners' increased pollution) and imperfect property rights. Other applications include the general equilibrium effects of commodity and trade taxes, international transfers (the 'transfer problem'), minimum wage constraints, and immiserizing growth. The Author assumes that students have some experience in formulating and answering comparative statics questions in an optimization setting. Building on these skills, and developing the idea of stability in an equilibrium setting (the Marshall Lerner condition), students learn how to formulate and answer comparative static questions in trade models.
