Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religious conflict in Ireland has had a long history. Faith, Famine, and Faction is a case study of religious conflict in the copper-mining community of Bunmahon, Co. Waterford, Ireland in the mid-nineteenth century. By the time an English evangelical clergyman, Rev. David Alfred Doudney, came to the area in 1847, intense exploitation of its copper resources had begun. Depression in the industry followed by famine and its legacy, spurred Doudney to initiate educational establishments to help the poor and deprived of the area, children particularly. These initiatives brought him into conflict with Catholic clergy who suspected him of engaging in proselytism. Doudney was more interested in encouraging a more vital Christianity in opposition to the nominalism he found around him, whether among Catholics or Protestants, than he was in forced religious conversion. However, such a distinction was not clear at popular level. In the rising tensions that ensued and against the backdrop of a suspected suicide, Doudney was the object of bigoted opposition, a narrow xenophobia, and of threat to his life, that together forced his departure. Not without blemish himself, Doudney articulated a strong anti-Catholic rhetoric common to the Victorian age, which he directed against the doctrines and practices of the Catholic Church.

Book excerpt: The history of Cornwall in the first half of the seventeenth century is both dramatic and turbulent. In Faction and Faith, Anne Duffin draws upon extensive new source material, combining national documents and local family collections with a detailed analysis of churchwardens' accounts, borough records and over 350 wills. She challenges the established view that Cornwall was naturally royalist and presents a picture of a politically-aware and religiously-splintered society. Faction and Faith, the first major publication since 1933 on this period in Cornwall, challenges the established view of Cornish society in the early seventeenth century through the extensive use of new source materials from national and local records. Market: Scholars of early seventeenth century history, academic and local libraries, postgraduate and undergraduate students of history, all those with an interest in Cornish and Civil War history.

Book A Europe of Courts a Europe of Factions

Download or read book A Europe of Courts a Europe of Factions written by Ruben Gonzalez Cuerva and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-08-28 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In A Europe of Courts, a Europe of Factions the contributors offer an analysis of the political groups of the most representative European courts of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Transcending individual cases, this collection presents the first comparative overview of the phenomenon of court factionalism. Through original research and a critical approach, González Cuerva and Koller explore in depth the emergence, coexistence and image of court factions. This contribution to the debate on the nature of early modern policy-making is enriched with a European-wide focus, which allows comparison of the circumstantial and micropolitical factors accounting for the spread of factions and the conditions in which they functioned. It also allows partisan sources to be examined with the necessary caution. Contributors are Stefano Andretta, Janet Dickinson, Luc Duerloo, Pavel Marek, José Martínez Millán, Toby Osborne, David Potter, Jonathan Spangler, Evrim Türkçelik, and Maria Antonietta Visceglia.
