Book Mother Nature Is Trying to Kill You

Download or read book Mother Nature Is Trying to Kill You written by Dan Riskin and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2014-03-04 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fun exploration of the darker side of the natural world reveals the fascinating, weird, often perverted ways that Mother Nature fends only for herself. It may be a wonderful world, but as Dan Riskin (cohost of Discovery Canada’s Daily Planet) explains, it’s also a dangerous, disturbing, and disgusting one. At every turn, it seems, living things are trying to eat us, poison us, use our bodies as their homes, or have us spread their eggs. In Mother Nature Is Trying to Kill You, Riskin is our guide through the natural world at its most gloriously ruthless. Using the seven deadly sins as a road map, Riskin offers dozens of jaw-dropping examples that illuminate how brutal nature can truly be. From slothful worms that hide in your body for up to thirty years to wrathful snails with poisonous harpoons that can kill you in less than five minutes to lustful ducks that have orgasms faster than you can blink, these fascinating accounts reveal the candid truth about “gentle” Mother Nature’s true colors. Riskin’s passion for the strange and his enthusiastic expertise bring Earth’s most fascinating flora and fauna into vivid focus. Through his adventures— which include sliding on his back through a thick soup of bat guano just to get face-to-face with a vampire bat, befriending a parasitic maggot that has taken root on his head, and coming to grips with having offspring of his own—Riskin makes unexpected discoveries not just about the world all around us but also about the ways this brutal world has shaped us as humans and what our responsibilities are to this terrible, wonderful planet we call home.

Download or read book Mother Nature written by Catherine M. Roach and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2003-01-30 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This brief but ambitious book explores our relationship with nature through the imagery we use when we talk about Mother Nature. Employing the critical tools of religious studies, psychology, and gender studies, Catherine M. Roach examines the various manifestations of nature as "mother" and what that idea implies for the way we approach the natural world. Part One, "Nature as Good Mother," discusses the notion that nature is, or is like, a beneficent and nurturing mother who provides and maintains life. In studying the "green" slogan "Love Your Mother," Roach questions the effects -- for women and for the environment -- of imputing female gender to nature. She asks us to look at the associations that "motherhood" and "mothering" carry within a culture still shaped by patriarchy. She notes the danger of such an apparently pro-environmental slogan if "mother" evokes the bountiful, self-sacrificing provider who herself requires no care. Part Two, "Nature as Bad Mother," looks at the contrary notion of nature as a violent, threatening, and wrathful mother. This image arises most often when humans and technology are depicted as masters of unruly nature. Here Roach draws on theological reflection to analyze this ambivalence toward nature manifested in a fantasy that casts humans as gods. She explores the contributions of eco-theology and eco-psychology to a "heart of darkness" perspective. Finally, Part Three, "Nature as Hurt Mother," looks at possibilities and pitfalls of environmental healing inherent in the image of nature as a mother we have wounded and now seek to heal.

Book Facing Sherman in South Carolina

Download or read book Facing Sherman in South Carolina written by Christopher G. Crabb and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2010-12-10 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Major General William T. Sherman's march from Savannah, Georgia, to Columbia, South Carolina, was marked by a battle with an unrelenting enemy: the swamps of the Palmetto State. For more than two weeks, Sherman's veterans faced an unforgiving quagmire, coupled by daily skirmishes with gallant bands of outnumbered Confederates. Along the way, a ruined countryside and wrecked towns marked the path of an army unlike any "since the days of Julius Caesar." It would take an army as adept with the axe as they were with the rifle to tame the rivers, tributaries and swamps of the South Carolina Lowcountry. Join historian Chris Crabb as he traces the steps of Sherman's sixty-thousand-man army in its "amphibious march" from Beaufort to Columbia.

Jolted by the voice from his past, Victor must unearth the true identity of the woman who had warned him to run when they made love for the first time. Siren's Silence portrays the tale of two young lovers whose relationship comes to an abrupt end shortly after their cross-country journey to Stillwater, Minnesota. Victor Frantiska - the handsome son of a four-star general - and Siren Myskina - a stunning mysterious green-eyed girl - are both freshmen at Duke when they first meet. Siren immediately captured Victor's heart. What strings their fate together is not Siren's beauty but her oddity of personality, a personality that spawns Victor's desperate attempts to root out the source of her elusiveness. This contemporary literary work, influenced by authors such as Thomas Wolfe and F. Scott Fitzgerald, weaves in lyrical elements to create a tapestry that narrates an intricate tale of love, lust, obsession and suspense that vividly reflects the reality of our time. It is for students, teachers, scholars, and avid readers of classic literary novels. The theme of this novel - love is war - serves as a reminder to all of us that love can bring peace, or it can bring terror, uncertainty, and unbearable pain.

Book Authoritative Democracies

Download or read book Authoritative Democracies written by Bill K. Koul and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-07-22 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book comments on growing authoritarianism in democracy and suggests how it ought to be instead. It asks if some degree of authoritarianism is the need of the hour to address potentially existential issues facing the human race. Readers are encouraged to analyse the state of democracy in their own countries and verify if it meets their expectations, or if it is just a myth or an imposter, or a necessary but imperfect compulsion in the absence of a perfect alternative. The book presents a commentary on the state of democracy in some of the world’s leading democracies. It aims to challenge the human mind, which seems to be getting accustomed to not having to think, thanks to a constant bombardment of information—real and fake and in-between—that it receives through social and print media, which is freely accessible through smartphone to which it has become addicted. It discusses how the drivers of capitalism – through their business-like connections with powerful and influential politicians and celebrities—could be cleverly manipulating the gullible human mind and exploiting the system to their own material benefit.

Book America s Overpopulation Predicament Blindsiding Future Generations

Download or read book America s Overpopulation Predicament Blindsiding Future Generations written by Frosty Wooldridge and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2021-03-02 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America’s Overpopulation Predicament: Blindsiding Future Generations— The subject of this book will profoundly and adversely affect every man, woman and child on earth by 2050. Most of us have experienced a situation when we or someone we know has some critical knowledge to share that needs immediate action only to be told to wait our turn as other irrelevant topics are given attention. This author asks for his findings to be heard against an ocean of mediocrity as he relates his personal “eye opening” experiences from all over the world with similar emotion, I suspect, as Newton felt when he suddenly understood the force of gravity, or that of Archimedes when he shouted “Eureka” as he suddenly understood the method for measuring precious metal content in an object. Like the seer who catches a glimpse into the future, Wooldridge finds it hard to limit his efforts to the written word. For here we find as compelling a case for massive and immediate action as ever there was one. Here is a subject matter so extraordinary that it should be shouted from every rooftop. The information this book contains is imperative and irrefutable. It destroys the impotent etchings of any clay or gold tablets as a roadmap for humanity. Man or woman, young or old, it will entreat you to look ahead without bias to the stark reality of what is ahead for our nation and our world. Packed with references to support his case, and literally floating above contrary voices like whitecaps on the ocean, Wooldridge advances the case for the salvation of modern civilization. He suggests courses of action that will ultimately prove to be the only way to prevent humanity from vanishing like dust in the wind. K. R. Hampshire, Researcher and Entrepreneur, Denver, Colorado
