Book Facing Face

Download or read book Facing Face written by Skyler Raye and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-04-25 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imagine suffering a traumatic brain injury. Imagine being in a mental ward when your lover deserts you. Imagine relinquishing the successful business you cultivated from the ground up. Imagine being told to vacate your home of over ten years. Imagine watching, dumbfounded, as friends take flight from your life. Imagine being stripped of your sense of purpose, your identity. Worst of all, imagine losing your mind. Skyler Raye doesn’t have to imagine these things, as she has lived them. But that was just the beginning of her nightmare. Mini-vacations in inpatient mental hospitals followed, coupled with way too many prescription drugs. Storm after storm slammed into Skyler’s life; her struggle to stay afloat seemed hopeless, particularly to her. Through it all, Skyler religiously expelled her turbulence into dozens of journals and “art therapy” projects. A compilation of these journals, “Facing Face” is her map out of hell. It takes you along her journey through and out of the darkness, and offers hope to those out there hurting for whatever reason. Skyler details how she was able to grasp onto that one pinhole of light, and learned it is not so much what happens to you, but how you react to it. A sense of humor also helps.

Book Facing the Mirror

Book excerpt: The women at Julie's International Salon share their experiences of bodily self-presentation, femininity, aging, and caring. Their own words are at the center of the book; the stories of their lives, fresh and compelling, are told here with affection. But beyond the stories themselves, Frida Kerner Furman explores the socio-moral significance of these beauty shop experiences, showing how they reveal as much about society at large as about older women. For in telling us how they perceive reality, make choices, and live in their worlds, the women of Julie's expose structures of power, inequality, and resistance in the larger world that all of us, young or old, beautiful or not, face every day.

Book Facing the Other Novel Theories and Methods in Face Perception Research

Download or read book Facing the Other Novel Theories and Methods in Face Perception Research written by Davide Rivolta and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We rely heavily on faces during social interactions. Humans possess the ability to recognise thousands of people very quickly and accurately without effort. The serious social difficulties that follow abnormalities of the face recognition system (i.e., prosopagnosia) strongly underline the importance of typical face skills in our everyday life. Over the last fifty years, research on prosopagnosia, along with research in the healthy population, has provided insights into the cognitive and neural features behind typical face recognition. This has also been achieved thanks to non-invasive neuroimaging techniques such as functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI), Electroencephalography (EEG), Magnetoencephalography (MEG), Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS). However, there is still much debate about the cognitive and neural mechanisms of face perception. In the current “Research Topic” we plan to gather experimental works, opinions, commentaries, mini-reviews and reviews that focus on new or novel theories and methods in face perception research. Where is the field at the moment? Do we need to re-think the experimental procedures we have adopted so far? Again, what kind of techniques (or combination of them) and analysis methods will be important in the future? From the experimental point of view we encourage both behavioural and neuroimaging contributions (e.g., fMRI, EEG, MEG, DTI and TMS). Despite the main emphasis on face perception, memory and identification, we will also consider original works that focus on other aspects of face processing, such as expression recognition, attractiveness judgments and face imagery. In addition, animal investigations and experimental manipulations that alter face recognition abilities in typical human subjects (e.g., hypnosis) are also welcome. Overall, we are proposing a Research Topic that looks at face processing using different perspectives and welcome contributions from different domains such as psychology, neurology, neuroscience, cognitive science and philosophy. The current “Research Topic” evolved over the desire to acknowledge the relatively recent loss of three giants in the field: Drs. Shlomo Bentin, Truett Allison and Andy Calder. We dedicate this “Research Topic” to them and their pioneering studies.

Book Two Faces of Beauty

Download or read book Two Faces of Beauty written by William Davis and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2016-03-22 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of micro didactics is dissimilar to all collections that have come before it. It is the product of competing in two college literary contests and the taking of a writing course. The contests were at Lamar State College in Beaumont Texas and Eastfield College in Mesquite Texas. Also a writing course offered by the Long Ridge Writers Group. These were the reasons these works were created, but what of the sources? Its sources are as diverse as random chance will allow. They are life experiences that have merged with the learning experiences in the bizarre imagination of the author and tempered with elements from deep within. Two Faces of Beauty may well be called a multigenre work, but still major differences exist with this work. Not just being microdidactic, that is, the most possible information and instructions compressed into the fewest possible words, but the common threads that run through the entire book from work to work regardless of the genre. No matter, short story, essay, autobiographical, or poetry, the threads are there, the threads of duality, justice, poetic or otherwise, and truth. This truth transcends mere research, though research is critical in any story, fiction or nonfiction. I speak here of truth reflected by the world in which we live. These works are wide-ranging and will take the reader from the mountaintops of the human experience to the depths of despair with many stops in between the two.

Book Facing up to the History of Emotions

Download or read book Facing up to the History of Emotions written by Stephanie Downes and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-12-26 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together several strands of medieval and medievalist work in the history of emotions, with a focus on literary, historical and cinema studies. It asks how we may best ‘face up’ to work that has been done already in these fields, and speculates about work that might yet be done, especially by medievalists working across medieval and postmedieval sources. In the idiom ‘facing up,’ its editors evoke the impulse to assess and realize the place of medieval studies in the burgeoning field of emotions research. Conceptually, psychologically, and artistically, the face is perceived as being at the forefront of many human interactions and emotional practices – as such, the face is not only a powerful conceptual site for theorizing human relationships, past and present, or a site for the representation of emotion: it is itself a catalyst for feeling. As such, the contributions gathered here provide a cutting-edge reflection on the history of medieval emotions.

Download or read book Facing Age written by Laura Hurd Clarke and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2010-12-16 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book in the new series Diversity and Aging, Laura Hurd Clarke's Facing Age examines the relationship between aging and women in a culture obsessed with youthfulness. From weight gain, to wrinkles, to sagging skin, to gray hair, the book explores older women's complex and often contradictory feelings about their bodies and the physical realities of growing older. Although the women in the book express discontent about their aging visage, they also emphasize the importance of functional abilities and suggest that appearance becomes less central in later life. Drawing on in-depth interviews conducted over a ten year period, Hurd Clarke brings alive feminist theories about aging, beauty work, femininity, and the body. The book also discusses medicine and the aging appearance, with interviews from medical providers and women about treatments such as Botox injections and injectable fillers. This book makes an important and timely contribution to the discussion of gendered ageism and older women's experiences of growing older in a youth-obsessed culture.

Download or read book Facing Poetry written by Frauke Berndt and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-10-12 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alexander Gottlieb Baumgarten (1714–1762) is known in intellectual history for having established the discourse of philosophical aesthetics with his "Meditationes philosophicae de nonnullis ad poema pertinentibus" (Reflections on Poetry) and "Aesthetica" (Aesthetics), which consists of two books and is considered Baumgarten’s most important work. But this book amends that history. It shows that Baumgarten's aesthetics is a science of literature that demonstrates the value of literature to philosophy. Baumgarten did not intend to pursue such a task, but in working on his philosophical texts and lectures, he ends up analyzing, synthesizing, and contextualizing literature. He thereby treats it not as belles lettres or as a moral institution but rather as an epistemic object. His aesthetics is thus the first modern literary theory, and his articulation of this theory would never again be matched in its complexity and systematicity. Baumgarten’s theory of literature has never been discovered. It waits latently to take its place in intellectual history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: J. Krishnamurti, one of the most beloved and renowned religious teachers of the twentieth century, often taught his students that they must look at the state of the world, with all its violence and conflict, if they are ever to understand themselves. To turn away from world events was for him not to be alive to what life has to teach. Facing a World in Crisis presents a selection of talks that Krishnamurti gave on how to live in and respond to troubling and uncertain times. His message of personal responsibility and the importance of connecting with the broader world is presented in a nonsectarian and nonpolitical way. Direct and ultimately life-affirming, Facing a World in Crisis will resonate with readers today who are looking for a new way to understand and find hope in challenging times.

Download or read book Facing Up written by Steven Weinberg and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2012-03-01 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New York Times’s James Glanz has called Steven Weinberg “perhaps the world’s most authoritative proponent of the idea that physics is hurtling toward a ‘final theory,’ a complete explanation of nature’s particles and forces that will endure as the bedrock of all science forevermore. He is also a powerful writer of prose that can illuminate—and sting... He recently received the Lewis Thomas Prize, awarded to the researcher who best embodies ‘the scientist as poet.’” Both the brilliant scientist and the provocative writer are fully present in this book as Weinberg pursues his principal passions, theoretical physics and a deeper understanding of the culture, philosophy, history, and politics of science. Each of these essays, which span fifteen years, struggles in one way or another with the necessity of facing up to the discovery that the laws of nature are impersonal, with no hint of a special status for human beings. Defending the spirit of science against its cultural adversaries, these essays express a viewpoint that is reductionist, realist, and devoutly secular. Each is preceded by a new introduction that explains its provenance and, if necessary, brings it up to date. Together, they afford the general reader the unique pleasure of experiencing the superb sense, understanding, and knowledge of one of the most interesting and forceful scientific minds of our era.

Book Facing the Monarch

Download or read book Facing the Monarch written by Garret P. S. Olberding and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-05-11 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the popular consciousness, manipulative speech pervades politicized discourse, and the eloquence of politicians is seen as invariably rooted in cunning and prevarication. Rhetorical flourishes are thus judged corruptive of the substance of political discourse because they lead to distortion and confusion. Yet the papers in Facing the Monarch suggest that separating style from content is practically impossible. Focused on the era between the Spring and Autumn period and the later Han dynasty, this volume examines the dynamic between early Chinese ministers and monarchs at a time when ministers employed manifold innovative rhetorical tactics. The contributors analyze discrete excerpts from classical Chinese works and explore topics of censorship, irony, and dissidence highly relevant for a climate in which ruse and misinformation were the norm. What emerges are original and illuminating perspectives on how the early Chinese political circumstance shaped and phrased—and prohibited—modes of expression.

Book Facing the Other

    Book Details:
  • Author : Nigel Zimmermann
  • Publisher : James Clarke & Company
  • Release : 2016-03-31
  • ISBN : 0227905288
  • Pages : 318 pages

Download or read book Facing the Other written by Nigel Zimmermann and published by James Clarke & Company. This book was released on 2016-03-31 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the significance of the body? What might phenomenology contribute to a theological account of the body? And what is gained by prolonging the overlooked dialogue between St. John Paul II and Emmanuel Levinas? Nigel Zimmermann answers these questions through the agreements and the tensions between two of the most important thinkers of the twentieth century. John Paul II, the Polish pope, philosopher, and theologian, and Emmanuel Levinas, the French-Jewish philosopher of Lithuanian heritage, were provocative thinkers who courageously faced and challenged the assumptions of their age. Both held the human person in high regard and did their thinking with constant reference to God and to theological language. Zimmermann does not shirk from the challenges of each thinker and does not hide their differences. However, he shows how they bequeath a legacy regarding the body that we would overlook at significant ethical peril. We are called, Zimmermann argues, to face the other. In this moment God refuses a banal marginalisation and our call to responsibility for the other person is issued in their disarming vulnerability. In the body, philosophy, theology, and ethics converge to call us to glory, even in the paradox of lowly suffering.
