Specifically, the study seeks to determine the barriers and motivators that influence their education in regards to retention and persistence in academic programs. The study seeks to show that if socioeconomic barriers are indeed a major hindrance to their success, then there is a need for an intervention strategy. Therefore, our work could suggest that progress toward educational equity may be achieved through identifying barriers and implementing an intervention plan that could potentially increase student success. The results from the research study assisted in identifying ways to implement already-existing resources and connect them with student barriers. This study helped utilize the college's resources to the fullest potential. Once student barriers are identified, the institution can then determine ways to offer students suggestions on how to better their circumstances.

However, most community college students do not graduate; many earn no credits and may leave school with no more advantages in the labor market than if they had never attended. Experts disagree over the reason for community colleges' mixed record. Is it that the students in these schools are under-prepared and ill-equipped for the academic rigors of college? Are the colleges themselves not adapting to keep up with the needs of the new kinds of students they are enrolling? In After Admission, James Rosenbaum, Regina Deil-Amen, and Ann Person weigh in on this debate with a close look at this important trend in American higher education. After Admission compares community colleges with private occupational colleges that offer accredited associates degrees. The authors examine how these different types of institutions reach out to students, teach them social and cultural skills valued in the labor market, and encourage them to complete a degree. Rosenbaum, Deil-Amen, and Person find that community colleges are suffering from a kind of identity crisis as they face the inherent complexities of guiding their students towards four-year colleges or to providing them with vocational skills to support a move directly into the labor market. This confusion creates administrative difficulties and problems allocating resources. However, these contradictions do not have to pose problems for students. These procedures helped keep students on track and, the authors suggest, could have the same effect if implemented at community colleges. As college access grows in America, institutions must adapt to meet the needs of a new generation of students. Book excerpt: The purpose for conducting the study was to examine factors related to rural low-income, first generation college students' obstacles to community college enrollment. The study examined barriers students overcame to attend college and focused on rural college students from two community colleges in Missouri and Arkansas. The following questions guided the research: 1. What attendance barriers did rural community college students identify as being most difficult for them to overcome? 2. Were there differences between the self-identified attendance barriers based on gender for male and female rural community college students? 3. Were there differences in attendance barriers for rural community college students based on whether they enrolled immediately out of high school or postponed attendance? 4. Were there differences in attendance barriers for rural community college students based on low-income or first generation classifications? A purposeful sample was chosen and 170 surveys were collected overall. Results were tabulated using descriptive statistics. The survey results showed that respondents believed their cumulative GPA had a great deal of influence on their decision to enroll at the local, rural community college. Financial aid eligibility and if the student's parents had attended a community college or university also played a major role in their successful enrollment.

It also covers maternal mortality, morbidity, stillbirth, and influences to pregnancy and pre-pregnancy. Volume 3 focuses on developments since the publication of DCP2 and will also include the transition to older childhood, in particular, the overlap and commonality with the child development volume. The DCP3 evaluation of these conditions produced three key findings: 1. There is significant difficulty in measuring the burden of key conditions such as unintended pregnancy, unsafe abortion, nonsexually transmitted infections, infertility, and violence against women. 2. Investments in the continuum of care can have significant returns for improved and equitable access, health, poverty, and health systems. 3. There is a large difference in how RMNCH conditions affect different income groups; investments in RMNCH can lessen the disparity in terms of both health and financial risk.
