Book The Anthropomorphic Lens

Download or read book The Anthropomorphic Lens written by Walter Melion and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-11-06 with total page 549 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anthropomorphism – the projection of the human form onto the every aspect of the world – closely relates to early modern notions of analogy and microcosm. What had been construed in Antiquity as a ready metaphor for the order of creation was reworked into a complex system relating the human body to the body of the world. Numerous books and images - cosmological diagrams, illustrated treatises of botany and zoology, maps, alphabets, collections of ornaments, architectural essays – are entirely constructed on the anthropomorphic analogy. Exploring the complexities inherent in such work, the interdisciplinary essays in this volume address how the anthropomorphic model is fraught with contradictions and tensions, between magical and rational, speculative and practical thought. Contributors include Pamela Brekka, Anne-Laure van Bruaene, Ralph Dekoninck, Agnès Guiderdoni, Christopher P. Heuer, Sarah Kyle, Walter S. Melion, Christina Normore, Elizabeth Petcu, Bertrand Prevost, Bret Rothstein, Paul Smith, Miya Tokumitsu, Michel Weemans, and Elke Werner.

Book Fortune s Faces

Download or read book Fortune s Faces written by Daniel Heller-Roazen and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2004-12-01 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arguably the single most influential literary work of the European Middle Ages, the Roman de la Rose of Guillaume de Lorris and Jean de Meun has traditionally posed a number of difficulties to modern critics, who have viewed its many interruptions and philosophical discussions as signs of a lack of formal organization and a characteristically medieval predilection for encyclopedic summation. In Fortune's Faces, Daniel Heller-Roazen calls into question these assessments, offering a new and compelling interpretation of the romance as a carefully constructed and far-reaching exploration of the place of fortune, chance, and contingency in literary writing. Situating the Romance of the Rose at the intersection of medieval literature and philosophy, Heller-Roazen shows how the thirteenth-century work invokes and radicalizes two classical and medieval traditions of reflection on language and contingency: that of the Provençal, French, and Italian love poets, who sought to compose their "verses of pure nothing"in a language Dante defined as "without grammar," and that of Aristotle's discussion of "future contingents" as it was received and refined in the logic, physics, theology, and epistemology of Boethius, Abelard, Albert the Great, and Thomas Aquinas.Through a close analysis of the poetic text and a detailed reconstruction of the logical and metaphysical concept of contingency, Fortune's Faces charts the transformations that literary structures (such as subjectivity, autobiography, prosopopoeia, allegory, and self-reference) undergo in a work that defines itself as radically contingent. Considered in its full poetic and philosophical dimensions, the Romance of the Rose thus acquires an altogether new significance in the history of literature: it appears as a work that incessantly explores its own capacity to be other than it is.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How will the world’s oil-producing countries react when fossil fuels are threatened by a new resource? Guardian of Power is an adult thriller about the search for an environmentally clean and sustainable source of energy and how a breakthrough in the research is threatened by an international conspiracy. Dr Ben Moyles is a brilliant, young research physicist working on the Puissance Project in Sergy, near the border between France and Switzerland. The Project was established to look at ways of generating a sustainable source of energy through the process of nuclear fusion. However, no one involved in the Puissance Project is aware that security in the complex has been breached on a major level by a State organisation which has a very strong interest in protecting its investment in oil production. During the course of his work, Ben sets up an experiment before leaving for his summer holiday on the family farm in the UK, intent on reviewing its progress when he returns. When he resumes work, Ben discovers the experiment has been partially successful and this sets in motion a chain of events which puts him – and potentially the whole world – in grave danger. Those readers who prefer a story with intellectual depth as well as heart pounding fiction will enjoy this book.

Book First E C Conference on Solar Heating

Download or read book First E C Conference on Solar Heating written by C. den Ouden and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 1082 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contributors to this Conference have shown the wide range of active and passive solar heating systems which have been researched, installed and monitored in recent years throughout western Europe and elsewhere. Yet much remains to be done if solar heating is to reach its full potential. The Conference Committee hopes that this record of the proceedings will provide a basis for the further development of these systems. Many difficulties have been surmounted in arriving at today's position. The foundations of the growing confidence of architects and engineers are to be found in the concerted programmes of research and development mounted by ty,'o of the sponsors of the Conference the European Community and the International Energy Agency. Some of the more tangible products of these programmes have been reported here: component and system behaviour has been subjected to rigorous scientific study; new test facilities have been founded; test procedures devised; simulation methods developed and evaluated; design rules formulated and checked against measured performance. It has been apparent here that the willingness to exchange information and experiences, which has always been a feature of the solar energy scene, remains as strong as ever. A further information-sharing initiative was noted on the part of another sponsor, UNESCO - the setting-up of the European Cooperative Network on Solar Energy, involving countries from both eastern and western Europe.
