Book Design and Hazards Report for the Argonne Fast Source Reactor AFSR

Download or read book Design and Hazards Report for the Argonne Fast Source Reactor AFSR written by G. S. Brunson and published by . This book was released on 1959 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Argonne Fast Source Reactor is designed to operate at low power (nominally 1000 watts) to supply neutron fluxes, both fast and thermal, for laboratory experiments. It is built around a cylindrical core (with vertical axis) of solid, highly enriched uranium approximately 4 1/2 in. in diam. by 4/4 in. high. The blanket is of solid depleted uranium with a minimum thickness of eight in.; its outer form is cylindrical, 20 5/8 in. in diam. by 20 5/8 in. high. The reactor, contained in a shield of high density concrete of minimum thickness 4 1/2 ft, is freestanding on the floor of the reactor building. A graphite thermal column 4 x 4 x 6 ft is provided. All control and safety mechanisms are located in a pit beneath the reactor.

Book Casting and Fabrication of Core Material for Argonne Low Power Reactor Fuel Elements

Download or read book Casting and Fabrication of Core Material for Argonne Low Power Reactor Fuel Elements written by R. L. Salley and published by . This book was released on 1959 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The manufacture of fuel blanks used in the fabrication of fuel elements for the Argonne Low Power Reactor is described. The thin, plate-type elements contain a wrought aluminum-base core alloy with a nominal composition of 17.5 wt.% enriched uranium, 2.0 wt.% nickel, and 0.5 wt.% iron, clad with an aluminum-- nickel alloy. The fuel elements were fabricated by a picture-frame technique, employing elemental silicon bonding and followed by hot and cold rolling to size. Development, casting, hot and cold rolling, cleaning, and punching of core blanks are discussed. A description of the nondestructive testing method and an evaluation of the manufacturing processes are given.
