The ability of soft materials such as block copolymer to form a microphase separation can create a rich variety of nanoscale periodic patterns. This offers the potential to fabricate high-density arrays for use in data storage, electronics, molecular separation and for combinatorial chemistry and DNA screening. The current work is devoted to the formation of three different nanotemplates using block copolymers PS-b-P4VP hydrogen-bonded with amphiphile PDP. Macroscopic orientation of the supramolecular polymeric complex has been achieved by large amplitude oscillatory shear (LAOS). Then a suitable solvent was used to extract the amphiphile. Three different nanotemplates were providing nanotubes, nanosheets and nanowires to pattern other materials (conducting and semiconducting). In this work the diblock copolymer PS-b-P4VP was used to prepare CdSe nanoparticles. The organic matrix served as a medium to constrain the particles size as well as to stabilise them. The resulting arrangement on Si-wafer was a core-shell structure of CdSe with a P4VP-b-PS corona. Thermal treatment of PS-b-P4VP(CdSe) in thin films on Si-wafers induced the growth of CdSe wires in micro- and nanometers scales. Also CdSe nanoparticles stabilised via PS-b-P4VP could be shown to form highly symmetric nanodiscs and nanoring structures by using Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) techniques.

Book excerpt: Nanoscale magnetic dot arrays have attracted considerable interest, both for fundamental studies of micromagnetism and for possible applications in high-density magnetic data storage. Self-assembled block copolymers provide an alternative nanolithography technique to fabricate large-area nanomagnet arrays. Block copolymer thin films that micro-phase separate into periodic domains can be used as templates to define arrays of close-packed nanostructure, using a series of etching steps. Using polystyrene-polyferrocenyldimethyl-silane (PS-PFS), large-area polymer dots, silica dots and magnetic dots with periods of 56 nm were made using a series of plasma etching steps. Magnetometry techniques are used to characterize the bulk magnetic behavior of the dot arrays of Co, NiFe and pseudo spin valve structures. These dot arrays show strong magnetostatic interaction between the dots and within the dots. The self-assembly process is simple and low cost, however, the block copolymers typically have uncontrolled defects and lack long-range order. A topographically patterned substrate is used to guide the phase-separation in a subsequently deposited block copolymer film. The lateral dimensions of the patterns in the substrates, and interfacial interactions, are key factors in the ordering mechanism. Well-ordered block copolymer structures can be achieved under proper confinement conditions. In addition, the position of the polymer microdomains and defects in the array such as dislocations can be purposefully controlled by the design of the topographical guiding features. Combining topographic confinement with block copolymer lithographic methods will enable large-area ordered functional dot arrays to be made for various applications.

Book excerpt: One of the single-most insightful, and visionary talks of the 20th century, "There's plenty of room at the bottom," by Dr. Richard Feynman, represented a first foray into the micro- and nano-worlds of biology and chemistry with the intention of direct manipulation of their individual components. Even so far, for decades there has existed a gulf between the bottom-up molecular worlds of biology and chemistry, and the top-down world of nanofabrication. Creating single molecule nanoarrays at the limit of diffraction could incentivize a paradigm shift for experimental assays. However, such arrays have been nearly impossible to fabricate since current nanofabrication tools lack the resolution required for precise single-molecule spatial manipulation. What if there existed a molecule which could act as a bridge between these top-down and bottom-up worlds? At ~100-nm, a DNA origami macromolecule represents one such bridge, acting as a breadboard for the decoration of single molecules with 3-5 nm resolution. It relies on the programmed self-assembly of a long, scaffold strand into arbitrary 2D or 3D structures guided via approximately two hundred, short, staple strands. Once synthesized, this nanostructure falls in the spatial manipulation regime of a nanofabrication tool such as electron-beam lithography (EBL), facilitating its high efficiency immobilization in predetermined binding sites on an experimentally relevant substrate. This placement technology, however, is expensive and requires specialized training, thereby limiting accessibility. The work described here introduces a method for bench-top, cleanroom/lithography-free, DNA origami placement in meso-to-macro-scale grids using tunable colloidal nanosphere masks, and organosilane-based surface chemistry modification. Bench-top DNA origami placement is the first demonstration of its kind which facilitates precision placement of single molecules with high efficiency in diffraction-limited sites at a cost of $1/chip. The comprehensive characterization of this technique, and its application as a robust platform for high-throughput biophysics and digital counting of biomarkers through enzyme-free amplification are elucidated here. Furthermore, this technique can serve as a template for the bottom-up fabrication of invaluable biophysical tools such as zero mode waveguides, making them significantly cheaper and more accessible to the scientific community. This platform has the potential to democratize high-throughput single molecule experiments in laboratories worldwide.
