Book Fabrication of Carbon based Nanocomposite Materials for Energy Storage Processes

Download or read book Fabrication of Carbon based Nanocomposite Materials for Energy Storage Processes written by Arturo Reza Ugalde and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our society's development depends on the way we use, store, and transform the energy. Currently, we have multiple sources of clean energy to cover the demand of a growing population. However, a big gap remains in the technology to efficiently store the energy that is not being consumed. The purpose of this thesis is to explore carbon-based composite materials to promote the development of new systems for the efficient conversion, use, and storage of energy: first, at small-scale storage (batteries) and second, at large-scale storage (power to gas). In both cases, different carbon allotropes and functionalization methods were considered. The first half of the thesis describes materials and methods to improve the air cathode in Zn-air batteries. These batteries are considered promising energy storage devices because of the numerous advantages such as high energy density, low-cost and abundance of Zn, environmental friendliness, and safety. The first study is focused on developing a double layer membrane fabricated with thermoplastic polyurethane, carbon nanotubes, and activated carbon membrane to improve the oxygen diffusivity and to prevent electrolyte leakage. For the second study, we developed a bifunctional electrocatalyst to promote the oxygen reactions in Zn-air batteries and achieve an electrically rechargeable configuration. The electrocatalyst was fabricated with Co3O4 particles attached to a functionalized carbon support. The second half of the thesis is focused on the catalytic methanation of CO. This process allows the reduction of the main greenhouse gas, through the power-to-gas technology. Renewable energy can be used to power a reactor where the CO/CO2 is reduced to methane, which can be transported and stored in current systems. We considered Ni-based catalysts and carbon-based supports with the purpose of improving the CO conversion, the selectivity to CH4, and the catalyst stability. This study first compares Ni supported on AC and Ni3Sn supported on AC to determine the effectiveness of Sn as a carbon fiber suppressor. In a second step, the study describes the fabrication method and catalyst performance of a core-shell structure using silica spheres grown on SWCNTs coated with the catalysts Ni3Sn and FeNi3 to improve the thermal stability and catalyst activity.

Book Development of High performance Polymer based Dielectric Nanocomposites for Advanced Multicomponent Applications

Download or read book Development of High performance Polymer based Dielectric Nanocomposites for Advanced Multicomponent Applications written by and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Capacitive energy storage materials are essential in designing components for power electronics, pulsed power systems, inverters, signal processing etc. They are extensively used in the modern electronic technology. Their applications in telecommunication, military, aerospace, automobile, power equipment among others have placed them on a high demand. Their preference over other energy storage technologies is due to their high-power density and fast charging-discharging cycle. However, one of the challenges associated with such energy storage materials is their low energy density. Carbon-based conductive nanoparticles (CBCN) such as graphene nanosheets (GNs) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have paved ways for advancing such energy storage materials. The introduction of CBCN in an insulative polymer matrix for electrostatic energy storage materials has been demonstrated with improved energy storage property due to the excellent properties of such nanoparticles. However, high energy dissipation and dielectric loss are the main shortcomings of the resultant nanocomposites. Another hurdle faced by this class of nanodielectric composites is the low voltage endurance. The low voltage endurance is contributed by the large electrical conductivity of the nanoparticles. On the other hand, polymeric materials used for dielectric film energy storage exhibit inherent poor thermal management, low mechanical strength, and inferior thermomechanical properties. These challenges hinder their applications as high capacitive energy storage materials and other related applications where such properties are required. To date, no available material satisfies all these prerequisites required for large capacitive energy storage, thermal, mechanical, and thermomechanical properties for various engineering applications. Therefore, there is need for research to develop nanodielectric materials that will bridge these shortcomings associated with polymers and polymer-CBCN nanocomposites not only for energy storage but also for multicomponent applications; hence, this invigorates the focus of this research. These challenges can be addressed by proper modification of nanoparticles and materials combination. Therefore, various polypropylene (PP) nanocomposites containing GNs and CNTs conductive nanoparticles, hexagonal boron nitride (BN) and barium titanate (BT) insulative nanoparticles were developed. The study adopted hydrothermal and self-assembly methods for insulation of the conductive GNs and CNTs using the insulative BN and BT, respectively. The nanocomposites’ fabrication process employed easy and cost-effective solution and melt compounding methods. The morphology and phase changes of the nanoparticles and nanocomposites were examined using Scanning Electron Microscopes (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), X-Ray Diffractometer (XRD) and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR). The developed nanocomposite materials were subjected to mechanical, thermal, thermomechanical, and electrostatic analyses. The nanocomposites revealed increase of about 20% tensile strength, 65% Young Modulus, 239.4% nano-hardness, 80.7% nano-elastic modulus, 59% nano-stiffness, 136% nano-creep reduction, 97% wear rate reduction, 11.4oC crystallization temperature, above 40oC thermal stability, 23.3% heat deflection temperature, 11oC Vicat softening temperature, 287.7% glass transition temperature, 320 folds dielectric constant at 100 Hz, 200% energy storage density and appreciable low energy dissipation when respectively compared with the commercial PP homopolymer. This study further used COMSOL Multiphysics to model and simulate the effect of the insulative nanoparticles on the conductive nanoparticles in enhancing electrostatic properties of such developed nanocomposites.
