Book Fabrication and Characterization of BSTO and Nonferroelectric Oxide Composites for Use in Phased Array Antennas and Other Electronic Devices

Download or read book Fabrication and Characterization of BSTO and Nonferroelectric Oxide Composites for Use in Phased Array Antennas and Other Electronic Devices written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A ceramic ferroelectric phase shifting device has been demonstrated using Ba(1-x)Sr(x)TiO3 (BSTO) ceramics. As a part of an effort to optimize the electronic device performance in the phase shifter, various composites of BSTO combined with other nonelectrically active oxide ceramics have been formulated. In general, the composites have reduced dielectric constants, epsilon', where epsilon = epsilon' = i(epsilon)', and loss tangents, tan delta. The low dielectric constant and low loss tangent reduce the overall impedance mismatch and the insertion loss of the device, In addition, the overall tunability, change in the dielectric constant with applied voltage, is maintained at a relatively high level. The combination of electronic properties of these materials offer substantially higher operating frequencies, 10 GHz and above. Another application for one of the composites is for use as a capacitor-varistor surge protector. The microstructures including grain size and phase analysis have been examined using SEM and X-ray diffraction. The analysis of the phase formation, compositional variations, and grain size will be related to the electronic properties of the materials. (jg).

Book Fabrication and Characterization of Barium Titanate Thin Film on Polycrystalline Nickel Substrate

Download or read book Fabrication and Characterization of Barium Titanate Thin Film on Polycrystalline Nickel Substrate written by Parisa Sahebi and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ferroelectric BaTiO3 (BTO) thin films were deposited on polycrystalline nickel disks and silicon wafer substrates by rf magnetron sputtering. Nickel oxide (NiO) and nanocrystalline nickel (nc-Ni) layers were used as interfacial buffer layers. Microstructural studies with X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy reveal that the BTO films deposited at temperatures lower than 700°C have an amorphous structure. However, the BTO films sputtered at temperatures higher than 700°C are partially crystalline. BTO films have a good and continuous interface with both interfacial layers with no interdiffusion or reaction with the substrates. In the case of BTO deposition with nc-Ni interlayer at higher deposition temperature of 800°C, a thin NiO layer forms between the nc-Ni and BTO films. Having nc-Ni as an interfacial layer enhances surface morphology and decreases surface roughness. This study shows that nc-Ni can act as a proper interfacial layer between a ceramic like BTO and the metallic substrates and is a better alternative for NiO buffer layer.

Book Hydrothermal Processing of Barium Strontium Titanate Composites on Printed Circuit Board for Thin Film Varactor Applications

Download or read book Hydrothermal Processing of Barium Strontium Titanate Composites on Printed Circuit Board for Thin Film Varactor Applications written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thin film Ba0.7Sr0.3TiO3 has been deposited onto printed circuit boards at low temperatures for low and high frequency applications. The fabrication method involves spin coating sol-gel composites (a mixture of BST powder suspended in an amorphous BST sol), and treating the resultant films at 175°C. The treatment is done in an autoclave in an aqueous environment comprised of barium hydroxide, strontium hydroxide, and water, and is carried out at elevated temperature and pressure. This causes the amorphous BST sol to recrystallize, forming bridges that link the BST powders together, creating a dense network, leading to a higher dielectric constant. Three different types of powders have been explored for the composite. They are low-temperature derived, ceramic derived, and sol-gel derived powder. Low-temperature derived powders are the smallest in size, in the nanometer range. Due to such small sizes, the ferroelectric properties are lost, leading to no tunability and very low dielectric constant. The permittivity ranges from 30 to 55. Sol-gel derived powders are very reactive to the hydrothermal process. The resultant film permittivity is the highest, ranging from 200 to 260, but with a limited tunability of 1%. Ceramic derived powders are compatible with the process. The permittivity is less than that of sol-gel derived, with values from 130 to 140, but the tunability ranges from 4 to 8% at low frequencies (500 kHz to 20 MHz). For high frequency characterization (45 MHz to 1.15 GHz), films containing ceramic derived powder are deposited onto grounded coplanar waveguide capacitors. The dielectric constant significantly reduced, reaching as low as 18, but tunability increased to 18%.

Book Strontium Titanate

Download or read book Strontium Titanate written by Oleksandr Tkach and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Strontium titanate (STO) is a classical high-permittivity perovskite material known since the 1940s. Although incipient ferroelectric behaviour of SrTiO3 was thoroughly studied during several decades, many new physical phenomena in STO and its solid solutions have been predicted theoretically and observed experimentally in past few years. The obtained results were successfully applied for the development of modern electronic devices on the basis of macroscopic and nanostructured samples. Besides the incipient ferroelectricity, properties of STO include a structural phase transition, semiconductivity, superconductivity, and thermoelectricity, among others. This book provides the latest information on the developments of field preparation, characterization, and application of STO and the materials based on it, with perspectives on future research. It collects the contributions of several established researchers from around the world on the fundamental mechanisms, processing, and possible uses for STO-based materials in the form of single crystals, thin films, and ceramics. This book covers a broad range of topics related to STO and materials based on it, including an overview of lattice dynamics and magnetic resonance characterization, Sr/Ti ratio, and stress induced modification of the properties, modelling, and simulation of improper ferroelectricity and multiferroic phases, dielectric responses and thermoelectric performance for tunable devices, and energy harvesting applications, respectively.
