Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled FABRICATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF EPITAXIAL YBa Cu O 2 3 y THIN FILMS ON DOUBLE-BUFFERED SILICON SUBSTRATES submitted by WONG HO YI ERIC for the degree of Master of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in August 2003 The discovery of perovskite copper oxide YBa Cu O (YBCO) has aroused a 2 3 y constantly increasing interest in this material due to the potential applications in microelectronics devices, such as microwave elements, multilayer junctions, etc. Suitable substrates with a low dielectric constant, good high frequency properties, large size and low cost are necessary. Silicon substrates are widely used and well developed in the semiconductor industry and microwave device applications. Therefore, successful fabrication of high T YBCO films on silicon is of interest for various applications of hybrid superconductor-semiconductor devices and interconnected circuits. In such applications, the epitaxial growth of YBCO on silicon is extremely important. This thesis presents a systematic investigation of the fabrication and characterization of epitaxial YBCO thin films on silicon substrates with a double buffer of Eu CuO (ECO)/YSZ(Yttria-Stabilized Zirconia). Silicon (001) substrates 2 4 were prepared using a chemical etch by dilute HF acid prior to thin film deposition. The YBCO thin films were grown via an entirely in situ process using an on-axis rf magnetron sputtering method with optimized deposition parameters including the deposition temperature, operating pressure and partial oxygen pressure. The crystallinity, surface morphology, electrical properties, and interface of the obtained YBCO/ECO/YSZ thin films were studied by x-ray diffraction, surface profiler, atomic force microscope, optical microscope, standard dc four-probe measurements and small angle x-ray reflection. The X-ray diffraction patterns showed that all the thin films were highly c-axis oriented. A full width of 0.69 at half maximum of the YBCO(005) peak was obtained. This was smaller than reported in previous studies of YBCO thin films on double buffered silicon or nickel substrates. The atomic force microscopy image showed that the ECO buffer surface was flat and smooth. The average roughness over a wide scanning region of 2000m was less than 25nm. The optical microscope images showed that the surface morphology of the grown YBCO thin films was significantly improved by the ECO buffer layer since ECO had a very stable 214-T' crystal structure and very small lattice mismatch with YBCO. The YBCO/ECO/YSZ multilayers were further characterized by small angle x-ray reflection. The surface roughness of the YBCO layers decreased when an ECO buffer was added. No intermediate layer was found at the YBCO/ECO and ECO/YSZ interfaces. The results suggest that ECO is chemically compatible with YBCO and YSZ. The superconductivity of YBCO films was significantly improved by the ECO/YSZ double buffer. This is indicated by the fact that YBCO thin films on silicon substrates with an ECO/YSZ double buffer showed a higher T than that grown on YSZ/Si without the ECO layer. The advantages of using ECO/YSZ double buffer layers in deposition of YBCO on silicon were clearly demonstrated. It would provide a good basis for the potential applications of YBCO on other semiconductors, metallic or me

Book The Manufacture of High Temperature Superconducting Tapes and Films

Download or read book The Manufacture of High Temperature Superconducting Tapes and Films written by Kurt A. Richardson and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 1999-11 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The phenomena of superconductivity has enormous industrial potential, but the penetration of superconductor-based products has, thus far, been slow. An indisputable fact is that there are prizes, and profits, for the teams that solve the critical problems in understanding and processing these complex materials. The continuous processing of superconducting tapes and wires is a necessary stage that will open up the industrial market to the designers of a diverse range of time and energy saving devices, particularly in ultra-fast computing and lossless power transmission. The aim of the research reported herein was to investigate the fabrication of superconducting tapes and films via two different processes, namely: the established PIT technique, and a less well known electrochemical route. The PIT research yielded partially textured (a characteristic not found in previously reported thallium-based PIT tapes) and high purity tapes with promising transport properties. The main subject of this work is the electrodeposition of superconducting films with particular emphasis on the optimisation of the deposition process, as opposed to the optimisation of the post-deposition heat treatment. This is not a well researched area. Therefore the research herein deals with the mechanisms of the deposition process in order to achieve a high standard of reproducibility in producing a variety of superconductor precursor films. The heat-treatment of the as-deposited films was determined, and results are presented concerning the characteristics of the resulting superconducting films. An attempt was made to fabricate, for the first time via electrodeposition, (Tl, Pb)-1223 films. Superconductivity was successfully observed in both Bismuth- and Thallium-based films. Extensive further work is required, but the impact upon society from superconducting devices draws ever nearer.

Book Fabrication of Yttria Stabilized Zirconia Thin Films on Poroussubstrates for Fuel Cell Applications

Download or read book Fabrication of Yttria Stabilized Zirconia Thin Films on Poroussubstrates for Fuel Cell Applications written by Andres Leming and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A process for the deposition of yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) films, on porous substrates, has been developed. These films have possible applications as electrolyte membranes in fuel cells. The films were deposited from colloidal suspensions through the vacuum infiltration technique. Films were deposited on both fully sintered and partially sintered substrates. A critical cracking thickness for the films was identified and strategies are presented to overcome this barrier. Green film density was also examined, and a method for improving green density by changing suspension pH and surfactant was developed. A dependence of film density on film thickness was observed, and materials interactions are suggested as a possible cause. Non-shorted YSZ films were obtained on co-fired substrates, and a cathode supported solid oxide fuel cell was constructed and characterized.

Book Superconducting Glass ceramics In Bi sr ca cu 0 Fabrication And Its Application

Download or read book Superconducting Glass ceramics In Bi sr ca cu 0 Fabrication And Its Application written by Yoshihiro Abe and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1997-12-04 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High Tc oxide superconductors such as Bi(Pb)-Sr-Ca-Cu-O (BSCCO) and Y-Ba-Cu-O (YBCO) systems are usually fabricated by sintering given mixtures of raw materials. Generally, sintering processing takes a longer heating time and the products are mechanically low strength and cannot be formed into complex shapes such as a coil, a curved fine tube or a fine rod. Another way to produce the ceramics is a glass-ceramic process in which the glasses prepared by melt-quenching are reheated for crystallization. A given mixture of raw materials in BSCCO is easily melted and quenched to form a given shape of glass, while that in YBCO is not glassified. This invaluable book has been written by authors from five countries. It presents a unique way to fabricate superconducting ceramics in BSCCO by glass-ceramic processing.
