Book excerpt: The concept of placing high strength linear reinforcements in a soil backfill to produce a vertical retaining structure is a recent idea that has been applied with success at a number of locations. Rational procedures have been developed for the design of these structures when the reinforcements consist of long metal straps. In certain situations advantages in construction and economy could be gained by replacing the metal straps with a continuous high strength fabric as reinforcement. The purpose of this investigation was to examine the behavior of a number of fabric reinforced earth models and to determine if the design methods that have been applied to metal strap reinforced earth walls can be applied to fabric reinforced walls. The economic feasibility of fabric reinforced earth walls was also investigated. The results of the model tests indicated that the design of fabric reinforced earth walls using methods developed for metal strap reinforced walls produces conservative results. Further investigation is required to define the actual mechanism involved in fabric reinforced earth walls. The economic analysis indicated that fabric reinforced walls can be competitive with other types of retaining structures for low heights.

The number of GRS walls and abutments built to date is relatively low due to lack of understanding of GRS. While failure rate of GMSE has been estimated to be around 5%, failure of GRS has been found to be practically nil, with studies suggesting many advantages, including a smaller susceptibility to long-term creep and stronger resistance to seismic loads when well-compacted granular fill is employed. The term "Geosynthetics" was recently coined to encompass a diverse range of polymeric products designed for geotechnical purposes. One such purpose is the tensile reinforcement of soil~. As ten sile reinforcement, polymers have been used in the form of textiles, grids, linear strips and single filaments to reinforce earth structures such as road embankments, steep slopes and vertically faced soil retaining walls. A considerable number of retaining structures have been successfully con structed using the tensile reinforcing properties of "geosynthetics" as their primary means of stabilization. Despite such successes sufficient uncertainty exists concerning the performance of these new materials, their manner of interaction with the soil and the new design methods needed, that many authorities are still reticent concerning their use in permanent works. This book represents the proceedings of a NATO Advanced Research Workshop on the "Application of Polymeric Reinforcement in Soil Retaining Struc tures" held at the Royal Military College of Canada in Kingston, Ontario from June 8 to June 12, 1987. The initial concept for the workshop occur red during the ISSMFE Conference in San Francisco in 1985 when a group of geotextile researchers mooted the idea of hoiding a "prediction exercise" to test analytical and design methods for such structures.

A typical reinforcing material, on the other hand, can carry significant tensile forces. When combined, a reinforced soil is attained. Because of the interaction of the reinforcement and soil, the resulted composite structure possesses higher strength. This extra strength means, for example, that a slope can be built steeper. Geotextile, a fabric made of polymer material, was introduced as a soil reinforcing agent in the late 1950s. Since the early 1970s, it has been utilized in the construction of retained soil walls. In these walls, the geotextile sheets are used to wrap compacted soil in layers producing a stable composite structure. Geotextile-retained soil walls somewhat resemble the popular sandbag walls. Contrary to sandbag walls, however, geotextile reinforced walls can be constructed to significant height because of the geotextile's higher strength and a simple mechanized construction procedure.
