Book The Original Fables of La Fontaine

Download or read book The Original Fables of La Fontaine written by Fredk; Colin Tilney and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Original Fables of La Fontaine: Rendered Into English Prose A selection of some sort being imperative there seemed to be a simple and easy choice in the condition of absolute originality; particularly as the older fables are given in another volume of this series. This translation (in which I gratefully acknowledge the assistance of my friend Mrs. A. H. Beddoe) is neither "free" nor literal. It sometimes amplifies a thought, much as a musician might amplify the harmonies upon a master's figured bass. But even this is rarely done, and then only with a view to the youthful reader's pleasure and profit. With that view, further, the social and political introductions to the fables have been omitted, as well as the scientific discourses and the allusions to the unfortunate wars of Louis XIV. and other historical matters, all of which would have neither meaning nor interest but for "grown-ups" of a certain class. Book excerpt: The Fables of La FontaineJean de La FontaineCOMPLETE - 12 BOOKS IN 1Translated from the French by Elizur Wright. With Notes by J. W. M. Gibbs. The Fables of Jean de La Fontaine were issued in several volumes from 1668 to 1694. They are classics of French literature. The first edition of this translation of La Fontaine's Fables appeared in Boston, U.S., in 1841. It achieved a considerable success, and six editions were printed in three years. Since then it has been allowed to pass out of print, except in the shape of a small-type edition produced in London immediately after the first publication in Boston, and the present publishers have thought that a reprint in a readable yet popular form would be generally acceptable. The translator has remarked, in the "Advertisement" to his original edition (which follows these pages), on the singular neglect of La Fontaine by English translators up to the time of his own work. Forty years have elapsed since those remarks were penned, yet translations into English of the complete Fables of the chief among modern fabulists are almost as few in number as they were then. Mr. George Ticknor (the author of the "History of Spanish Literature," &c.), in praising Mr. Wright's translation when it first appeared, said La Fontaine's was "a book till now untranslated;" and since Mr. Wright so happily accomplished his self-imposed task, there has been but one other complete translation, viz., that of the late Mr. Walter Thornbury. This latter, however, seems to have been undertaken chiefly with a view to supplying the necessary accompaniment to the English issue of M. Dor's well-known designs for the Fables (first published as illustrations to a Paris edition), and existing as it does only in the large quarto form given to those illustrations, it cannot make any claim to be a handy-volume edition. Mr. Wright's translation, however, still holds its place as the best English version, and the present reprint, besides having undergone careful revision, embodies the corrections (but not the expurgations) of the sixth edition, which differed from those preceding it. The notes too, have, for the most part, been added by the reviser.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from One Hundred Fables The French regard La F ontaine as one of their greatest poets. He is certam the most popular, and French litera ture is so penetrated with his fables that an intimate acquaint ance with them is necessary in order to understand it. For this reason alone all students of French literature should read these fables, which have, however, a decided linguistic and literary value of their own, aside from their influence on modern literature. The present edition contains a larger number of these fables than most other editions with English notes, thus not only furnishing more reading-matter for interested stu dents, but also allowing a larger range of choice in case it is not deemed advisable to read the entire collection. All of the most popular fables are here included, and all, or nearly all, that have any distinct literary value. A few unimportant ones have been added merely because they were easy or amusing. Standard editions contain two hundred and thirty eight fables. A few of these are too 'long for an edition of this kind, and a few otherwise excellent fables contain passages inappropriate for reading in class. Some attempt has been made to arrange the fables in the order of their difficulty, and consequently no long or difficult one has been placed near the. Book Fifty Fables Classic Reprint

Download or read book Fifty Fables Classic Reprint written by La Fontaine and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-14 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fifty Fables The universal use of La Fontaine's Fables in education, both in France and elsewhere, and the frequency of refer ences to them in French literature, render unnecessary any apology for this book. The editor has tried to supply what he has long felt to be urgently needed, a convenient and suitable selection of the Fables, edited in a scholarly manner with English annotation. The fifty here given, including nearly all the best known ones, and a few that are less familiar, will be as many as most classes care to read. Those who wish to devote further study to the Fables should have a complete edition, such as that of Regnier or of Clement (see Introduction, p. Regnier is here followed as to text and punctuation, except that the names of animals are not capitalized, and that a few words have been modernized; -ot't and -01'ent in verb endings are changed to -ait and - aie7zt; other changes are indicated in the notes. The editor hereby expresses his obligation to the two editions mentioned above, as well as to the other works referred to in the Introduction; Edgren and Burnet's french-english Dictionary has been useful in suggesting English renderings. The vocabulary is in tended to include every word in the text (including the Appendix, and quotations in the notes). Idiomatic phrases are to be sought in the Vocabulary, and translations are avoided in the notes. Perfect consistency has sometimes been sacrificed to convenience. Such information as seems. Book excerpt: Excerpt from La Fontaine: And Other French Fabulists This story of Apollonius, or whoever was the inventor of it, describes the origin of Fable very gracefully, and perhaps with as near an approach to truth as has been attained by more learned speculations while it seems to assign to this kind of literature its true place in the scale of intellectual creation. It can rank neither with philosophy nor with poetry of the highesfkind; it has not the pretensions of rhetoric or of etoquence yet, _ in its finished form, it contains much of the philosophei's ethics, it enlists in its service some of the most graceful of the poet's gifts, and carries in its application a terse and pointed force of which the orator and the rhetorician have often been glad to avail themselves. Book The Complete Fables of La Fontaine

Download or read book The Complete Fables of La Fontaine written by Jean de la Fontaine and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2011-09-15 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this wonderful, vigorously contemporary translation, Craig Hill has captured the liveliness, satiric wit, and poetic beauty that made Jean de la Fontaine famous during his lifetime and his Fables celebrated as a masterwork of world literature ever since. Despite la Fontaine’s deceptively modest claim that all he intended was to put the moral tales of Aesop and other ancient fabulists into poetry for the pleasure of Louis XIV’s young son, his real accomplishment, as later generations have understood, was holding a mirror up to the society of his day and, in the process, fashioning a work that has become a classic. Borrowing from a variety of sources, la Fontaine gave the hitherto mute animals in ancient fables the power of speech. Backstabbing politicians, brainless nincompoops, charlatans, clueless heads of state, egomaniacs, empty-headed celebrities, foolish investors, gluttons, liars, penny–pinchers, self-important blowhards, and wastrels—these are the targets of la Fontaine’s pen. In this beautifully bound collector’s edition, Craig Hill has given us a rare treat: both the irreverent spirit and the vivid poetry that have made la Fontaine’s fables beloved through the ages, continuing to amuse and inspire centuries after they ?rst appeared in print.
