Book A Crossbreeding Experiment with Dairy Cattle

Download or read book A Crossbreeding Experiment with Dairy Cattle written by Milton Henry Fohrman and published by . This book was released on 1954 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1939, when the Bureau of Dairy Industry began its crossbreeding experiment at Beltsville, the published information on the crossbreeding of dairy cattle was slight, unimpressive, and very little of it was based on experimental results. The crossbreeding investigations at Beltsville were undertaken to develop knowledge on the subject which would provide a sound basis for advising the operators of milk-producing farms what to expect if they used crossbreeding in hopes of producing better replacements for their milking herds. Final results on any dairy cattle breeding research project cannot be published until the last animal on the project has died, so this report covers the breeding performance and milk and butterfat production on all individuals used on the project which have had time to complete a normal first-lactation period.

Book Brown Swiss X Holstein Crossbred Cows Compared to Pur Holstein Cow for Calving Traits Production and Conformation Measurements in First Second and Third Lactation

Download or read book Brown Swiss X Holstein Crossbred Cows Compared to Pur Holstein Cow for Calving Traits Production and Conformation Measurements in First Second and Third Lactation written by Stefan Blöttner and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dissertation provides an extensive evaluation of a designed crossbreeding experiment with dairy cattle. The results of the experiment were published in scientific papers. The thesis is divided in five chapters including an introduction, paper 1, 2, 3 and a general discussion. The experimental design included pure Holstein heifers and cows which were bred to 10 Brown Swiss sires and 10 Holstein sires. The offspring of these mating were compared to pure Holstein. All experimental units and their offspring were housed in the same facility. The results have shown that crossbred cows in this study were competitive with pure Holstein cows for traits analyzed. Furthermore, small advantages for Brown Swiss × Holstein crossbred cows were reported for fertility but not for production traits compared to pure Holstein cows.

Book Breeding for robustness in cattle

Download or read book Breeding for robustness in cattle written by Marija Klopcic and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-09-04 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past decade has revealed unfavourable trends in e.g. fertility, udder health and locomotion in some major dairy cattle breeds due to a large increase in production and insufficient consideration of functional traits in the breeding goals. Such unfavourable trends in some functional traits increase costs. Additionally, the enlargement of herds leads to less available labour time per individual cow. This asks for cows that are easy to handle. At the same time, society is demanding a higher welfare standard of animals. These contradicting developments have increased the desire for so called more robust animals. Robustness can be defined as 'the ability to maintain homeostasis in commonly accepted and sustainable herds of the near future'; or 'the ability of the cow to function well in the environment she lives in as well as in a wide range of climates and production systems'. This book contains a series of articles (26) dealing with the concept of robustness, including aspects like evolution, genetics, environment, animal health and welfare, and integrity. Besides the major functional traits also the links to energy balance, hot climatic conditions, and the attitude and input of stakeholders towards robustness as part of the breeding program are discussed. This book is the first attempt to summarise the available knowledge concerning this topic in cattle, making this book unique. The contributions are from authors of 16 countries from all over the world. However, the focus is presently on farm animal level, while in future robustness of the whole production system may also require additional attention.

Book Principles of Animal Biometeorology

Download or read book Principles of Animal Biometeorology written by Roberto Gomes da Silva and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-11-13 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book begins by describing in detail the mechanisms of energy exchange – radiative, convective, conductive and evaporative – together with techniques for their determination. The discussion extends to the importance of CO2, ozone and methane, together with that of aerosol pollutants and the evolution of atmospheric CO2. Subsequent chapters apply the results of the biophysical methods to mammals, birds and aquatic animals. Discussion includes problems of shelter and shade for animals in tropical environments and techniques for the thermal evaluation for shelters and for several tree types. The details of heat exchange between animals and the environment are presented, in separate chapters covering Mammals and Birds and Aquatic Mammals. A chapter on Shade and Shelter describes the importance of shade for animals, factors of shade efficiency, the protections offered by shelter and methods of calculating the protection afforded by both shade and shelter. A Special Methods chapter offers a variety of techniques for evaluating cutaneous and respiratory evaporation, and practical methods for sampling of hairs and the evaluation of hair coat characteristics.

Book Ecology Capitalism and the New Agricultural Economy

Download or read book Ecology Capitalism and the New Agricultural Economy written by Gilles Allaire and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-11-29 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With increasing pressure on resources, the looming spectre of climate change and growing anxiety among eaters, ecology and food are at the heart of the political debates surrounding agriculture and diet. This unique contribution unravels agri-environmental issues at different spatial levels, from local to global, documenting the major shifts in agriculture from a long-term perspective. The book begins by exploring the changes in the industrialisation and socialisation of agriculture over time, through the lens of institutional economics including The French Regulation School and Conventions Theory. Building on Polanyi’s ‘Great Transformation’, the chapters in this volume analyse long-term and contemporary changes in agriculture and food systems that have occurred throughout the last few centuries. Key chapters focus on the historical changes in provisioning and the social relations of production, consumption, and regulation of food in different socio-political contexts. The future of agriculture is addressed through an analysis of controversial contemporary political claims and their engagement with strategies that aim to improve the sustainability of agriculture and food consumption. To shed light on ongoing changes and the future of food, this book asks important environmental and social questions and analyses how industrial agriculture has played out in various contexts. It is recommended supplementary reading for postgraduates and researchers in agricultural studies, food studies, food policy, the agri-food political economy and political and economic geography.
