Book Eyes on the Goal

Download or read book Eyes on the Goal written by John Coy and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2010-04-07 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is a story about how life, like sports, can be unpredictable, frustrating, and exhilarating. Eyes on the Goal by John Coy is part of the 4 for 4 series, an action-packed middle grade series for young readers about four boys from diverse backgrounds who deal with family, friendship, and school situations. Just before they're due to start middle school, Diego, Gig, Jackson, and Isaac, four sports-loving friends, all attend the same weeklong soccer camp. Diego is an experienced soccer player, and Gig has a natural ability for the sport he never realized. But Jackson and Isaac are split into another group of players—a group with younger, smaller kids. For the first time, both boys aren't the stars of their team. In fact, they can't seem to get a handle on soccer. At the same time, Jackson is having a hard time getting a handle on his mom's deepening relationship with her boyfriend, and her suggestion that they move in with him. And Gig is worried about his father's deployment to Afghanistan. "Light, enjoyable reading for those downtimes between sports seasons." —Booklist "Coy has created a story of just the right length to keep his fans engaged. It is not necessary to have read Top of the Order to appreciate this one. Hints of fall football in middle school indicate that a third book is to follow." —School Library Journal

Book excerpt: Get ready for another binge-worthy romance from New York Times and international bestselling author Elle Kennedy! She’s good at achieving her goals… College senior Sabrina James has her whole future planned out: graduate from college, kick butt in law school, and land a high-paying job at a cutthroat firm. Her path to escaping her shameful past certainly doesn’t include a gorgeous hockey player who believes in love at first sight. One night of sizzling heat and surprising tenderness is all she’s willing to give John Tucker, but sometimes, one night is all it takes for your entire life to change. But the game just got a whole lot more complicated Tucker believes being a team player is as important as being the star. On the ice, he’s fine staying out of the spotlight, but when it comes to becoming a daddy at the age of twenty-two, he refuses to be a bench warmer. It doesn’t hurt that the soon-to-be mother of his child is beautiful, whip-smart, and keeps him on his toes. The problem is, Sabrina’s heart is locked up tight, and the fiery brunette is too stubborn to accept his help. If he wants a life with the woman of his dreams, he’ll have to convince her that some goals can only be made with an assist. Most of the time I felt like I wasn't normal. I don't think I'll ever be normal. Compared to everybody I felt like an outsider. Kids would always ask why are you in those extra classes and getting extra help? This led to a lot of unwanted attention. That led to more unwanted feelings, embarrassment, and a lack of confidence in myself, which still affects me to this day at 28. Depressed Angry Self-conscious Hated myself Can't read fast Suck at spelling Never thought I would be good enough A Dyslexic kid can't be successful As time went by I was always looking for answers and trying to figure out this game we call life. There was no light at the end of the tunnel for me. It was pitch black and went on and on. As the tunnel kept going, I started to get a little darker and deader inside. In the last few years, I have started to see light at the end of the tunnel. I can run away with my tail between my legs, or suck it up and fight back for once in my life and keep going through the darkness. Average or below average has been what I thought of myself my whole life. I'm now aiming for something bigger and better than average. In the last five years, I have read over 50 books and in the last seven written four books. I decided to turn the page in my own book and turn my lack of skills in reading and writing into a new strength. Life is not a guarantee and life is short. Now is the time to accomplish your goals and start living. This is The World Through My Dyslexic Eyes and how I see it. What does your world look like? Download or read book The Mind s Eye written by Oliver Sacks and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2010-10-26 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Mind’s Eye, Oliver Sacks tells the stories of people who are able to navigate the world and communicate with others despite losing what many of us consider indispensable senses and abilities: the power of speech, the capacity to recognize faces, the sense of three-dimensional space, the ability to read, the sense of sight. For all of these people, the challenge is to adapt to a radically new way of being in the world. There is Lilian, a concert pianist who becomes unable to read music and is eventually unable even to recognize everyday objects, and Sue, a neurobiologist who has never seen in three dimensions, until she suddenly acquires stereoscopic vision in her fifties. There is Pat, who reinvents herself as a loving grandmother and active member of her community, despite the fact that she has aphasia and cannot utter a sentence, and Howard, a prolific novelist who must find a way to continue his life as a writer even after a stroke destroys his ability to read. And there is Dr. Sacks himself, who tells the story of his own eye cancer and the bizarre and disconcerting effects of losing vision to one side. Sacks explores some very strange paradoxes—people who can see perfectly well but cannot recognize their own children, and blind people who become hyper-visual or who navigate by “tongue vision.” He also considers more fundamental questions: How do we see? How do we think? How important is internal imagery—or vision, for that matter? Why is it that, although writing is only five thousand years old, humans have a universal, seemingly innate, potential for reading? The Mind’s Eye is a testament to the complexity of vision and the brain and to the power of creativity and adaptation. And it provides a whole new perspective on the power of language and communication, as we try to imagine what it is to see with another person’s eyes, or another person’s mind.

Book excerpt: The Vancouver Narwhals’ star goalie. The New York Krakens’ head coach. This can’t possibly be a recipe for disaster. Goalie Brad Spencer is flying high after his team clinches the Cup and names him their MVP. Like his teammates, he’s ready to celebrate—ideally with someone in his bed. When he slips off to a gay bar, he meets someone who’s gorgeous, willing, and… absolutely the last man he should be touching. Head coach Anthony Caruso just wants to have a few drinks and get laid to soothe the sting of his team losing the Cup. Then that ridiculously sexy player from the opposing team strolls into the club. The chemistry is instantaneous, and a mountain of PHL regulations can’t keep them apart. After all, it’s just a hookup. And then another hookup. And then a summer getaway that’s just enough time and privacy for them to get in way over their heads. When the hockey season starts up again, they walk away… but they can’t stay away. Anthony and Brad value their careers way too much to be this reckless, but they’ve both been alone for way too long to ignore these feelings. Sooner or later, though, something has to give, and one of them is going to have to choose between the man he loves and the sport he lives for. Shot on Goal, book 3 of the Pucks & Rainbows series, is approximately 100,000 words and can be read as a standalone.
