Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eye-Strain in Health and Disease This volume comprises the substance of several monographs that the author has published from time to time during the past ten years in medical journals, with the addition of considerable new matter. He has added, also, the histories of many typical cases in detail with the view of illustrating some remarkable results of eye-treatment alone upon various forms of nervous disturbances that have persisted for years and failed to yield to any other form of treatment. Many of the histories published in this volume are given with sufficient completeness to shed much light upon the methods employed in each case, as well to demonstrate the results obtained by the use of glasses and graduated tenotomies upon some of the ocular muscles. To the oculist the technical portion of some of these records will doubtless prove of greater interest than to the general practitioner in medicine; but the author trusts that the labor involved in preparing such histories for the press from scattered office memoranda will not be deemed by any reader as misspent. The views which the author supported in his work on nervous diseases - relative to the effects of eye-strain upon the development of headache, neuralgia, sleeplessness, chorea, epilepsy, nervous prostration, and insanity - are reiterated here with strong clinical evidence to sustain them. Time has but strengthened the author's early convictions, while many of those who were antagonistic to these views years ago are now enthusiastic in their support. It is not necessarily injurious to the legs, or the arms, or the brain to become tired, for proper rest may restore all these to their nor mal condition. The same is true in regard to the eyes. Proof readers, sewing women, authors, and mechanics, who use their eyes for a long time upon near objects, must of necessity weary the muscles which adjust the eye to vision but if the weariness is compensated for by rest at proper intervals, there will be no harm done to the eyes, for they are so constructed that they can bear maximum fatigue as well as other parts of the body. Edu cation would cease, all mechanical work would soon have an end, if the eyes of school-children and of a certain kind of workmen were never tired. Eyes are never overworked, even if they feel very tired when the task is done, if their natural power and fresh ness return after the proper intervals of rest during the day and sleep at night. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of the Eye The following treatise is the outgrowth of a series of lectures delivered by the author at the Medico-Chirurgical College and Hospital during the last ten years. Its object is not to supply a mere ephemeral sketch of existing information on ophthalmology, but to provide a digested summary of the known facts for use of students who in after-life become practitioners of medicine. This work is based on an extended experience. The author has aimed at simplicity of diction in an effort to present to them, in language they can comprehend, the principles which underlie the normal as well as the pathological changes that take place in the eye and its appendages. Common knowledge as regards the subject of ophthalmology has been freely used, supplemented, however, by the authors own views of pathology and methods of treatment, together with the results of the most recent investigations and experiments. The arrangement of the work differs materially from most text-books on the subject. The diseases are considered according to the structures attacked in the order in which they are encountered in going from without inward. Refraction and ametropia are consequently considered in the latter part of the book on account of the influence they exert on all ocular conditions. Among the articles of special importance, the reader's attention is directed particularly to those upon albuminuric retinitis, haemorrhagic retinitis, lid operations, declinations of the retinal meridians, cataract, glaucoma, and diseases of the orbit. In the line of therapy, X-ray work is undoubtedly the most beneficial of the recent discoveries. The subconjunctival injection of salt solutions in iritis and corneal ulcers, peridectomy in pannus, grattage in trachoma, and the use of opaque slips combined with correcting lenses for conical cornea, are likewise given the prominence to which they are entitled in the subject of treatment.
