Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shortlisted for the Palestine Book Awards 2017 A powerful, groundbreaking history of the Occupied Territories from one of Israel's most influential historians From the author of the bestselling study of the 1948 War of Independence comes an incisive look at the Occupied Territories, picking up the story where The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine left off. In this comprehensive exploration of one of the world’s most prolonged and tragic conflicts, Pappe uses recently declassified archival material to analyse the motivations and strategies of the generals and politicians – and the decision-making process itself – that laid the foundation of the occupation. From a survey of the legal and bureaucratic infrastructures that were put in place to control the population of over one million Palestinians, to the security mechanisms that vigorously enforced that control, Pappe paints a picture of what is to all intents and purposes the world’s largest ‘open prison’.

Download or read book Genesis written by R. Kent Hughes and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2004-10-26 with total page 706 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book of Genesis contains some of the most beautiful and well-known stories in the Bible: the garden, the flood, the tower of Babel, and the lives of the patriarchs. But these are more than just good stories. They lay the groundwork for God's relationship with humanity and for his plan for our salvation, making Genesis foundational to understanding everything else that happens in the Bible. Genesis reveals much about human nature and the nature of God. From the actions of the first man and woman, we see where our rebellious, sinful nature originates. And through the whole book we see the hand of a sovereign God who is loving and merciful, but also just and holy. Time and again in Genesis, God showers his grace upon undeserving humanity, giving us our first tastes of God's enduring faithfulness that shines throughout the entire Bible. R. Kent Hughes, respected pastor and author of many other commentaries in the Preaching the Word series, takes readers back to the beginning of the Bible and moves through Genesis with careful exegesis. He explores the superbly crafted structure of the book as well as the weighty themes it contains. For those who preach, teach, and study God's Word, this exceptionally detailed work will reveal much about the beginnings of God's great story. Part of the Preaching the Word series.
Download or read book The Ladies Repository written by and published by . This book was released on 1870 with total page 1050 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of this women's magazine originated with Samuel Williams, a Cincinnati Methodist, who thought that Christian women needed a magazine less worldly than Godey's Lady's Book and Snowden's Lady's Companion. Written largely by ministers, this exceptionally well-printed little magazine contained well-written essays of a moral character, plenty of poetry, articles on historical and scientific matters, and book reviews. Among western writers were Alice Cary, who contributed over a hundred sketches and poems, her sister Phoebe Cary, Otway Curry, Moncure D. Conway, and Joshua R. Giddings; and New England contributors included Mrs. Lydia Sigourney, Hannah F. Gould, and Julia C.R Dorr. By 1851, each issue published a peice of music and two steel plates, usually landscapes or portraits. When Davis E. Clark took over the editorship in 1853, the magazine became brighter and attained a circulation of 40,000. Unlike his predecessors, Clark included fictional pieces and made the Repository a magazine for the whole family. After the war it began to decline and in 1876 was replaced by the National Repository. The Ladies' Repository was an excellent representative of the Methodist mind and heart. Its essays, sketches, and poems, its good steel engravings, and its moral tone gave it a charm all its own. -- Cf. American periodicals, 1741-1900.

As the power of the Roman Empire stretches across vast swathes of the known world, a young Jewish girl grows up within a devout family, learning her nation's customs and faith. But her seemingly ordinary story will soon intersect with the events that will change history forever. As Martha's world is rocked by circumstances that leave her questioning the God in whom her forefathers put their trust, she slowly learns to wait and to watch for the One whose coming has been foretold by the prophets – the Messiah, who will right all wrongs and establish God's kingdom. But when Martha and her siblings begin to encounter a radical new preacher from the north, their long-cherished dreams are first challenged – and then shattered. Can this extraordinary man – Jesus – really be the Messiah? Using an imagined back-story for one of the characters recorded in the gospels, "Through Martha's Eyes" provides the reader with the cultural and historical background to understand more fully the story at the heart of human history. Its descriptions of places, people and customs in the pages of the New Testament seek to enrich and enlighten both those who are new to the Bible and those for whom it is an already-cherished treasure. ‘This book… brings together biblical texts, lots of historical and social background, and plenty of intelligent imagination… Jesus was a real person living in a real historical world among real people, and this book helps bring his story alive’ Revd Dr David Wenham, MA, PhD, Tutor in New Testament, Trinity College Bristol; author of “The Parables of Jesus”, and “Paul and Jesus: The True Story”. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second novel in the trilogy, Land of Promise, and begins with Abe, Sarah Beth, and Helga building their new home as their family is expanding. An unexpected discovery and changes between them and their Indian neighbors bring about a different relationship to the land. The togetherness, separations and reunions between the three of them are all portrayed here, as well as the increasing difficulties of trying to maintain a single household on the Frontier. Further north, tensions and outbreaks of violence occurring between the Indians and settlers threaten to break into open warfare, as white patriotism and native hostility become more and more extreme. Helga ends up living with the tribe as this is happening and is swept up in their flight from the Army. She is wounded in one of the battles, and Abe has no idea where to look for her and his son. When Helga regained consciousness, she found her arm strapped to her chest and the chaos of the escape going on all around her. Ellen Standing Horse relayed the Chief's words and the details of the plan for the People. She'd strapped her white friend to a travois, and was now leading that horse and another one pulling her own bundles and one of Helga's that she'd found near the knife-slashed tipi. To keep from screaming as the rough trail jostled and shook her, Helga bit her lips until they bled.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rather than looking at Jesus -- the popular conception of the "historical Jesus" -- John Baggett contends that we should instead look with Jesus at the realities of God and neighbor as he perceived them. Baggett incorporates the witness of the key human relationships of Jesus, looking at why those earliest believers and friends considered him divine. Baggett then asks how Christ's transcendence can ultimately translate to significance for life and faith in today's story.
Download or read book In Your Eyes a Sandstorm written by Arthur Neslen and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2011-10-17 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who are the Palestinians? In this compelling book of interviews, Arthur Neslen reaches beyond journalistic clichés to let a wide variety of Palestinians answer the question for themselves. Beginning in the present with Bisan and Abud, two traumatized children from Jenin’s refugee camp, the book’s narrative arcs backwards through the generations to come full circle with two elderly refugees from villages that the children were named after. Along the way, Neslen recounts a history of land, resistance, exile, and trauma that begins to explain Abud’s wish to become a martyr and Bisan’s dream of a Palestine empty of Jews. Senior Fatah and Hamas figures relate key events of the Palestinian experience—the Second Intifada, Oslo Process, First Intifada, Thawra, 1967 War, the Naqba, and the Great Arab Revolt of 1936—in their own words. The extraordinary voices of women, children, farmers, fighters, drug dealers, policeman, doctors, and others, spanning the political divide from Salafi Jihadists to Israeli soldiers, bring the Palestinian story to life even as their words sow seeds of hope in the scorched Palestinian earth.

"Matar notes that the Arabs of the Maghrib and the Mashriq were eager to engage Christendom, despite wars and rivalries, and hoped to establish routes of trade and alliances through treaties and royal marriages. However, the rise of an intolerant and exclusionary Christianity and the explosion of European military technology brought these advances to an end. In conclusion, Matar details the decline of Arab-Islamic power and the rise of Britain and France." --Book Jacket.
