Book Gender Reversal and Cosmic Chaos

Download or read book Gender Reversal and Cosmic Chaos written by S. Tamar Kamionkowski and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2003-06-01 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about both the fear of gender reversal and its expression in the prophet Ezekiel's reworking of the marital metaphor. Kamionkowski argues that the abomination of "wife Jerusalem" is that she is attempting to pass for a male, thereby crossing gender boundaries and upsetting the world order. This story is therefore one of confused gender scripts, ensuing chaos and a re-ordering through the reinforcement of these strictly defined prescriptions of gendered behaviour.Using socio-historical evidence and the existence of the literary motif of "men turning into women" as a framework, this book argues that Ezekiel 16, in particular, reflects the gender chaos which arises as an aftermath of social and theological crises.

  • Pages : 290 pages

Download or read book Ezekiel s Eyes written by John Pease and published by . This book was released on 2022-03 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ezekiel's Eyes is set on the eve of Tribulation-a spiritual journey into the supernatural. A young man, Ezekiel, whose faith in God is unwavering and ever steady, finds himself in the middle of the age-old fight of good against evil. Ezekiel was born with the ability to see evil in all of its forms. But not only that, he was gifted the ability to kill it as well. On the flip-side, he can also harm an angel, which puts him in a unique position, and he now finds himself sought out by both sides. The demons want him because if they were to possess him, they could use him to harm angels before the appointed time, which is something none of them can do at present. The angels want him because he represents a threat, which they cannot allow to be exploited to shi the balance of power that has been preordained. An angel, Joshua, recognized all the good and potential within Ezekiel and chose to mentor and train him to stay hidden from Evil's sight, while helping him to develop his gifts. Joshua prepared Ezekiel for the impending battle he would soon have to face with the dark one, Nestor, a powerful demon who devours a person's physical body and their immortal soul. He seeks gifted ones like Ezekiel and adds their power to his own. Souls like Ezekiel's are very rare and referred to as keys. There are twelve of them in total that remain, and Nestor is intent on finding all of them. He would try to possess who he could, and then use them to draw the other keys to him-killing any that resist, taking their power and souls, until there were no more. Joshua believes that Ezekiel not only has the power to resist Nestor, but to destroy him as well, as the time of Tribulation draws near.

Sarah Calhoun is the fifteen-year-old daughter of the Elector Andrew Calhoun, one of Appalachee’s military heroes and one of the electors who gets to decide who will next ascend as the Emperor of the New World. None of that matters to Sarah. She has a natural talent for hexing and one bad eye, and all she wants is to be left alone—especially by outsiders. But Sarah’s world gets turned on its head at the Nashville Tobacco Fair when a Yankee wizard-priest tries to kidnap her. Sarah fights back with the aid of a mysterious monk named Thalanes, who is one of the not-quite-human Firstborn, the Moundbuilders of the Ohio. It is Thalanes who reveals to Sarah a secret heritage she never dreamed could be hers. Now on a desperate quest with Thalanes to claim this heritage, she is hunted by the Emperor’s bodyguard of elite dragoons, as well as by darker things—shapeshifting Mockers and undead Lazars, and behind them a power more sinister still. If Sarah cannot claim her heritage, it may mean the end to her, her family—and to the world where she is just beginning to find her place. Praise for Witchy Eye and D.J. Download or read book Asher s Eye written by David L. Dudley and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-04-29 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asher, a young Israelite, lives exiled in ancient Babylon. Born with one eye brown and the other blue, he has endured a lifetime of mockery and rejection. No wonder he despises YAH, the god of Israel, for being too weak to save his people from disaster. Asher becomes houseboy to a wealthy Babylonian lady, who tempts him to adopt the faith and culture of his oppressors. He is present when his uncle, the prophet Ezekiel, receives a vision of YAH, commanding him to speak judgment against Israel. Ezekiel's right eye turns blue--just like Asher's. Both men are prophets, but Asher resists that call with all his might. After all, prophets bring bad news of coming doom. Some, like Ezekiel, do crazy things. Prophets are persecuted. No! Far better, Asher reasons, the promise of luxury and power as a Babylonian. But then, some Israelites, including Asher's brother and best friend, Josiah, plot the Babylonian King Nebuchadrezzar's overthrow. Will Asher betray them or join the fight for his people's freedom? More important, will he accept the prophetic burden and pay the price for being a faithful servant of YAH--a price higher than he could have imagined?

Book Theological Dictionary of the Old Testament Volume XI

Download or read book Theological Dictionary of the Old Testament Volume XI written by G. Johannes Botterweck and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 1974 with total page 639 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This multivolume work is still proving to be as fundamental to Old Testament studies as its companion set, the Kittel-Friedrich Theological Dictionary of the New Testament, has been to New Testament studies. Beginning with father, and continuing through the alphabet, the TDOT volumes present in-depth discussions of the key Hebrew and Aramaic words in the Old Testament. Leading scholars of various religious traditions (including Roman Catholic, Lutheran, Reformed, Anglican, Greek Orthodox, and Jewish) and from many parts of the world (Denmark, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Israel, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United States) have been carefully selected for each article by editors Botterweck, Ringgren, and Fabry and their consultants, George W. Anderson, Henri Cazelles, David Noel Freedman, Shemaryahu Talmon, and Gerhard Wallis. The intention of the writers is to concentrate on meaning, starting from the more general, everyday senses and building to an understanding of theologically significant concepts. To avoid artificially restricting the focus of the articles, TDOT considers under each keyword the larger groups of words that are related linguistically or semantically. The lexical work includes detailed surveys of a word s occurrences, not only in biblical material but also in other ancient Near Eastern writings. Sumerian, Akkadian, Egyptian, Ethiopic, Ugaritic, and Northwest Semitic sources are surveyed, among others, as well as the Qumran texts and the Septuagint; and in cultures where no cognate word exists, the authors often consider cognate ideas. TDOT s emphasis, though, is on Hebrew terminology and on biblical usage. The contributors employ philology as well as form-critical and traditio-historical methods, with the aim of understanding the religious statements in the Old Testament. Extensive bibliographical information adds to the value of this reference work. This English edition attempts to serve the needs of Old Testament students without the linguistic background of more advanced scholars; it does so, however, without sacrificing the needs of the latter. Ancient scripts (Hebrew, Greek, etc.) are regularly transliterated in a readable way, and meanings of foreign words are given in many cases where the meanings might be obvious to advanced scholars. Where the Hebrew text versification differs from that of English Bibles, the English verse appears in parentheses. Such features will help all earnest students of the Bible to avail themselves of the manifold theological insights contained in this monumental work.
