Book A Study of Pilots Eye Movements During Visual Flight Conditions

Download or read book A Study of Pilots Eye Movements During Visual Flight Conditions written by Thomas M. Edwards and published by . This book was released on 1952 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Growing interest in increased cockpit vision has been shown for some time by the aircraft industry. This interest has been brought about by the general belief of airline pilots that cockpit vision in most present-day transports is not entirely satisfactory. Due to the substantial increase in the number of aircraft now using our airports and airways, there is a definite need for increased cockpit vision. The operational characteristics of aircraft vary considerably from one type to another, yet all use the same airports. The pilot eye-movement study is one phase of a cockpit vision study that was commenced in 1948 by the Technical Development and Evaluation Center of the Civil Aeronautics Administration at Indianapolis. The specific aim of the study was to determine which areas of the windshield and what visual angles the pilots actually use in performing critical flight maneuvers defined as take-off, landing approach, and low altitude turns. These definitions were established by the airline pilots themselves and were taken from a previous study of cockpit visibility, which study was based on an airline pilot questionnaire."--Introduction.

Book A Study of Pilot Eye Movements During Visual Flight Conditions in Army Fixed wing Liaison reconnaissance type Aircraft

Download or read book A Study of Pilot Eye Movements During Visual Flight Conditions in Army Fixed wing Liaison reconnaissance type Aircraft written by Roger M. Hardwicke and published by . This book was released on 1959 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "To obtain further substantial information for establishing minimum angles of vision from the cockpits of Army liaison-reconnaissance-type fixed-wing aircraft, motion pictures were taken of pilots’ eye movements with a newly developed head-mounted camera while each of a group of Army pilots performed various normal and tactical flight maneuvers. The head-mounted camera recorded both the field of view in the pilot’s look direction and the eyes and forehead on each photographic frame. It was possible to determine through which portion of the windshield the pilot was looking within 3.3°. The resulting data are presented for all conventional and tactical maneuvers performed in the Cessna L-19 "Bird Dog" aircraft in terms of the percentage of photographic frames to show the use of the available windshield area. The windshield area used by the pilots during the pilot eye-movement study substantiates, to a considerable extent, the conclusions drawn from a pilot questionnaire study of windshield use reported previously."--Summary.

Book Routine Maneuvers Under Day and Night Conditions Using an Experimental Panel Arrangement

Download or read book Routine Maneuvers Under Day and Night Conditions Using an Experimental Panel Arrangement written by Edward L. Cole and published by . This book was released on 1954 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is the ninth in a series of investigations of eye movements of pilots during instrument flight. The frequency, duration and sequence of eye fixations made by 15 pilots when flying day straight and level, level turns, straight dives and 180 degree time turns, and during night straight and level and level turns with a new panel arrangement are summarized. Comparisons are made between the maneuvers flown under day and night conditions. Also, for comparison of standard and experimental panel arrangements, data previously obtained using the standard Air Force panel during routine maneuvers under day conditions are included. Under all conditions the directional gyro, gyro horizon, vertical speed, airspeed and altimeter are the most used instruments.

Book The Oxford Handbook of Expertise

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Expertise written by Paul Ward and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-11-14 with total page 912 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of expertise weaves its way through various communities of practice, across disciplines, and over millennia. To date, the study of expertise has been primarily concerned with how human beings perform at a superior level in complex environments and sociotechnical systems, and at the highest levels of proficiency. However, more recent research has continued the search for better descriptions, and causal mechanisms that explain the complexities of expertise in context, with a view to translating this understanding into useful predictions and interventions capable of improving the performance of human systems as efficiently as possible. The Oxford Handbook of Expertise provides a comprehensive picture of the field of Expertise Studies. It offers both traditional and contemporary perspectives, and importantly, a multidiscipline-multimethod view of the science and engineering research on expertise. The book presents different perspectives, theories, and methods of conducting expertise research, all of which have had an impact in helping us better understand expertise across a broad range of domains. The Handbook also describes how researchers and practitioners have addressed practical problems and societal challenges. Throughout, the authors have sought to demonstrate the heterogeneity of approaches and conceptions of expertise, to place current views of expertise in context, to show how these views can be used to address current issues, and to examine ways to advance the study of expertise. The Oxford Handbook of Expertise is an essential resource both to those wanting to gain an up-to-date knowledge of the science of expertise and those wishing to study experts.
