Download or read book Science Fiction and Extro Science Fiction written by Quentin Meillassoux and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2015-11-22 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Science Fiction and Extro-Science Fiction, Quentin Meillassoux addresses the problem of chaos and of the constancy of natural laws in the context of literature. With his usual argumentative rigor, he elucidates the distinction between science fiction, a genre in which science remains possible in spite of all the upheavals that may attend the world in which the tale takes place, and fiction outside-science, the literary concept he fashions in this book, a fiction in which science becomes impossible. With its investigations of the philosophies of Hume, Kant, and Popper, Science Fiction and Extro-Science Fiction broadens the inquiry that Meillassoux began in After Finitude, thinking through the concrete possibilities and consequences of a chaotic world in which human beings can no longer resort to science to ground their existence. It is a significant milestone in the work of an emerging philosopher, which will appeal to readers of both philosophy and literature. The text is followed by Isaac Asimov’s essay “The Billiard Ball.”

Download or read book Finance Fictions written by Arne De Boever and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2018-03-06 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finance Fictions takes the measure of what it means to live in a world ruled by high finance by examining the tension between psychosis and realism that plays out in the contemporary finance novel. When the things traded at the center of the economy cease to be things at all, but highly abstracted speculations, how do we come to see the real? What sorts of narrative can accurately approach the actual workings of a neoliberal economy marked by accelerating cycles of market crashes, economic and political crisis, and austerity? Revisiting such twentieth-century classics of the genre as Tom Wolfe's Bonfire of the Vanities and Bret Easton Ellis’s American Psycho, De Boever argues that the twenty-first century is witnessing the birth of a new kind of realistic novel that can make sense of complex financial instruments like collateralized debt obligations, credit default swaps, and digital algorithms operating at speeds faster than what human beings or computers can record. If in 1989 Wolfe could still urge novelists to work harder to “tame the billion-footed beast of reality,” today’s economic reality confronts us with a difference that is qualitative rather than quantitative: a new financial ontology requiring new modes of thinking and writing. Mobilizing the philosophical thought of Quentin Meillassoux in the close reading of finance novels by Robert Harris, Michel Houellebecq, Ben Lerner and less well-known works of conceptual writing such as Mathew Timmons’ Credit, Finance Fictions argues that realism is in for a speculative update if it wants to take on the contemporary economy—an “if” whose implications turn out to be deeply political. Part literary study and part philosophical inquiry, Finance Fictions seeks to contribute to a new mindset for creative and critical work on finance in the twenty-first century.

Download or read book The Man Who Would Marry Susan Sontag written by Edward Field and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 2007-04-02 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long before Stonewall, young Air Force veteran Edward Field, fresh from combat in WWII, threw himself into New York’s literary bohemia, searching for fulfillment as a gay man and poet. In this vivid account of his avant-garde years in Greenwich Village and the bohemian outposts of Paris’s Left Bank and Tangier—where you could write poetry, be radical, and be openly gay—Field opens the closet door to reveal, as never been seen before, some of the most important writers of his time. Here are young, beautiful Susan Sontag sitting at the feet of her idol Alfred Chester, who shrewdly plotted to marry her; May Swenson and her two loves; Paul and Jane Bowles in their ambiguous marriage; Frank O’Hara in and out of bed; Fritz Peters, the anointed son of Gurdjieff; and James Baldwin, Isabel Miller (Patience and Sarah), Tobias Schneebaum, Robert Friend, and many others. With its intimate portraits, Field’s memoir brings back a forgotten era—postwar bohemia—bawdy, comical, romantic, sad, and heroic.
Download or read book Dear Incomprehension written by Stéphane Vanderhaeghe and published by University of Alabama Press. This book was released on 2024 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Dear Incomprehension tackles a broad swath of contemporary literature currently labeled "speculative fiction." A blurring of genres that includes science fiction, modern fairy tales, and avant-garde experimental fiction, these works are extremely popular but also derive from highly sophisticated philosophical and aesthetic sensibilities, ones that call into question and uproot the very foundations of stories and storytelling. Because such fictions subvert most conventional narrative devices-plot, recognizable characters, verisimilitude, logic, legibility-they deliberately confound almost any kind of conventional reading and criticism. So, what do you do with a text that cannot be conventionally read or understood? To do such a literature justice, the traditional frameworks of literary criticism fail, and Dear Incomprehension is more of an extended philosophical essay than it is a traditional work of criticism, as oblique and unconventional in its voice, tone, and methods as the texts it illuminates"--

Download or read book The Literature of Exclusion written by Andrew C. Wenaus and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-05-05 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early twentieth century, the Dadaists protested against art, nationalism, the individual subject, and technologized war. With their automatic anti-art and cultural disruptiveness, Dadaists sought to “signify no thing.” Today, data also operates autonomously. However, rather than dismantling tradition, data organizes, selects, combines, quantifies, and simplifies the complexity of actuality. Like Dada, data also signifies nothing. While Dadaists protest with purpose, data proceeds without intention. The individual in the early twentieth century agonizes over the alienation from daily life and the fear of being converted into a cog in a machine. Today, however, the individual in twenty-first-century supermodernity merges, not with large industrial machinery, but with the processual and procedural logic of programming with innocuous ease. Both exclude human agency from self-narration but to differing degrees of abstraction. Examining the work of B.R. Yeager, Samuel Beckett, Jeff Noon, Kenji Siratori, Mike Bonsall, Allison Parrish, and narratives written by artificial intelligence, Wenaus considers the threshold of sensible narration and the effects that the shift from a culture of language to a culture of digital code has on lived experience. While data offers a closed system, Dadaist literature of exclusion, he suggests, promises a future of open, hyper-contingent, unprescribed alternatives for self-narration.

Download or read book Planet Utopia written by Mark Featherstone and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-02-17 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The key figure of the capitalist utopia is the individual who is ultimately free. The capitalist’s ideal society is designed to protect this freedom. However, within Planet Utopia: Utopia, Dystopia, Globalisation, Featherstone argues that capitalist utopian vision, which is most clearly expressed in theories of global finance, is no longer sustainable today. This book concerns the status of utopian thinking in contemporary global society and the possibility of imagining alternative ways of living outside of capitalism. Using a range of sociological and philosophical theories to write the first intellectual history of the capitalist utopia in English, Featherstone provokes the reader into thinking about ways of moving beyond this model of organising social life through sociological modes of thought. Indeed, this enlightening volume seeks to show how utopian thinking about the way people should live has been progressively captured by capitalism with the result that it is difficult to imagine alternatives to capitalist society today. Presenting sociology and sociological thinking as a utopian alternative to the capitalist utopia, Planet Utopia will appeal to postgraduate and postdoctoral students interested in subjects including Sociology, Social Theory, Cultural Studies, Cultural Theory and Continental Philosophy.

Download or read book Wonder full Experiences in Music Education written by Aimee Beaulieu Schmidt and published by Waxmann Verlag. This book was released on 2022 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question of how musical coordination in a school wind band is addressed by pedagogues was qualitatively reconstructed using videographic interaction analysis. A process of Hervorhebungspraktik ('practice' of 'highlighting') was observed, which gradually brought musical elements out of their temporal context and into collective perception, allowing both atmospheric interaction with content and the growth of professional vision. A process of deconstruction and reintegration takes place as musical elements, now present in collective consciousness, withdraw back into the piece as a whole. This necessitates an educational approach emphasizing not only the elements themselves, but the relationships between them. The realms of edusemiotics and phenomenology give us a pragmatic way (in both a Deweyan and a Peircean sense) to approach learning in music-making that goes beyond the idea of (co-)constructivism as content-with-agency, teacher and student participate in coordinative interaction. Aimee Beaulieu Schmidt is a native Texan with teaching experience in American and German public education. As a band director and orchestral musician, she has helped build music education programs on two continents. She lives with her husband and two daughters near Frankfurt, Germany. Her research focuses on musical coordination, edusemiotics, and qualitative video analysis. Aimee Beaulieu Schmidt is a native Texan with teaching experience in American and German public education.
