Download or read book Extremism Triumphant written by Darin Wipperman and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2003 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Generations of Americans have witnessed the political disputes over slavery and abortion, the two most contentious issues in the nation's history. This book surveys the origins and course of this unfortunate strife, arguing that leaders on both sides of the two issues have embraced political expediency or an illogical view of the Constitution, rather than viable solutions. Focusing on key events and a diverse range of individuals, Extremism Triumphant offers fresh perspectives while lamenting missed opportunities and bitter debate. Making extensive use of Congressional debates and Supreme Court opinions, the narrative takes us on a journey from before the nation's founding to the early part of the 21st Century. Critical of each pole of the slavery impasse that brought civil war, the book shows how the nation made numerous errors as it tried to tackle the equally passionate feud over reproductive freedom. Unsurprisingly, both camps of the modern abortion debate receive criticism. With a willingness to question conventional wisdom dear to conservatives and liberals, Extremism Triumphant challenges each side to ponder its own claim to the moral high ground.

Book The Road to Disunion

  • Author : William W. Freehling
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2008-10-01

Download or read book The Road to Disunion written by William W. Freehling and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-10-01 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is history in the grand manner, a powerful narrative peopled with dozens of memorable portraits, telling this important story with skill and relish. Freehling highlights all the key moments on the road to war, including the violence in Bleeding Kansas, Preston Brooks's beating of Charles Sumner in the Senate chambers, the Dred Scott Decision, John Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry, and much more. As Freehling shows, the election of Abraham Lincoln sparked a political crisis, but at first most Southerners took a cautious approach, willing to wait and see what Lincoln would do--especially, whether he would take any antagonistic measures against the South. But at this moment, the extreme fringe in the South took charge, first in South Carolina and Mississippi, but then throughout the lower South, sounding the drum roll for secession. Indeed, The Road to Disunion is the first book to fully document how this decided minority of Southern hotspurs took hold of the secessionist issue and, aided by a series of fortuitous events, drove the South out of the Union. Freehling provides compelling profiles of the leaders of this movement--many of them members of the South Carolina elite. Throughout the narrative, he evokes a world of fascinating characters and places as he captures the drama of one of America's most important--and least understood--stories. The long-awaited sequel to the award-winning Secessionists at Bay, which was hailed as "the most important history of the Old South ever published," this volume concludes a major contribution to our understanding of the Civil War. A compelling, vivid portrait of the final years of the antebellum South, The Road to Disunion will stand as an important history of its subject. "This sure-to-be-lasting work--studded with pen portraits and consistently astute in its appraisal of the subtle cultural and geographic variations in the region--adds crucial layers to scholarship on the origins of America's bloodiest conflict." --The Atlantic Monthly "Splendid, painstaking account...and so a work of history reaches into the past to illuminate the present. It is light we need, and we owe Freehling a debt for shedding it." --Washington Post "A masterful, dramatic, breathtakingly detailed narrative." --The Baltimore Sun

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Terrorism as a factor of public life has generated far-reaching, and as yet underexplored, questions about narrative and representation. Different textual forms can investigate both the symbolic and the performative character of terroristic acts. Diverse literary traditions, ranging from countries of Eastern and Western Europe to North America and the Middle East, bring their respective historical imaginations to bear on such representations. The essays collected in this volume join together in a transdisciplinary effort to understand the role of narrative practice in all its varieties in approaching the phenomenon of terrorism, whether historical or contemporaneous. Book Scripting Revolution

Download or read book Scripting Revolution written by Keith Michael Baker and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2015-10-07 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "Arab Spring" was heralded and publicly embraced by foreign leaders of many countries that define themselves by their own historic revolutions. The contributors to this volume examine the legitimacy of these comparisons by exploring whether or not all modern revolutions follow a pattern or script. Traditionally, historians have studied revolutions as distinct and separate events. Drawing on close familiarity with many different cultures, languages, and historical transitions, this anthology presents the first cohesive historical approach to the comparative study of revolutions. This volume argues that the American and French Revolutions provided the genesis of the revolutionary "script" that was rewritten by Marx, which was revised by Lenin and the Bolshevik Revolution, which was revised again by Mao and the Chinese Communist Revolution. Later revolutions in Cuba and Iran improvised further. This script is once again on display in the capitals of the Middle East and North Africa, and it will serve as the model for future revolutionary movements.

Explaining the basics of Islam and guiding the reader through the intricacies of each significant fundamentalist group, the Palmers answer key questions: Who are the Muslim extremists and how do they fit within the broader context of the Islamic religion? What is their war plan and how do they operate? Who are their allies and what are their weaknesses? What is the experience of Israel, the Islamic world, and the United States in fighting extremists? How can they be defeated? Now in a thoroughly revised and updated edition, the book includes new chapters on Hamas, the Iraqi clones of Hizbullah--including Sadr--and the Islamic government in Turkey.

Book Religion and Extremism

Download or read book Religion and Extremism written by Douglas Pratt and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the three monotheistic religions of Judaism, Christianity and Islam, Douglas Pratt argues that despite a popular focus on Islam, extremist Jews and Christians can also enact terror and destruction. Religion and Extremism stresses that the ideological rejection of diversity underlies religious extremism resulting in violent behaviours and, increasingly, in hardening social and religious attitudes and responses. An analysis of religiously-driven terrorism reveals the presence of a distinctive and rigid form of exclusivity found in these religions. In this regard, the contemporary resurgence in totalising claims of fundamentalist ideologues is cause for particular concern. Pratt reasons that however expressed, the motif of the 'Absolute' is central to all, but how that absolute is and has been received, interpreted and responded to, is a matter of great diversity. The author asserts that theological 'Absolutism' displays an underlying dynamic whereby these three religions may be led into extremism. Religion and Extremism also explores contemporary issues of Islamophobia and mutual extremism, identified as 'reactive co-radicalization', and concludes by reflecting on how extremism today might be countered.

Book Teaching in a World of Violent Extremism

Download or read book Teaching in a World of Violent Extremism written by Eleazar S. Fernandez and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-05-21 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Violent extremism is not new, but we have witnessed its rise to the point that it has become a defining issue of our time. We cannot brush it aside any longer: it characterizes who we are as a people and as a global society. Why is violent extremism rising? What are its drivers and triggers? These questions must be asked and answered first, and Teaching in a World of Violent Extremism takes up the questions and the answers. In an effort to end violent extremism, the next questions that must be pursued are these: How shall we prevent and undo extremism, especially the militant and violent kind? In this world of violent extremism, what curriculum designs, educational programs, and pedagogies shall we employ to develop competent citizens, civic leaders, and pastors, as well as resilient communities?

Book The Israeli Response to Jewish Extremism and Violence

Download or read book The Israeli Response to Jewish Extremism and Violence written by Ami Pedahzur and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ami Pedahzur looks at the theoretical issue of how a democracy can defend itself from those wishing to subvert or destroy it without being required to take measures that would impinge upon the basic principles of the democratic idea. The text links social and institutional perspectives to the study, and includes a case study of the Israeli response to Jewish extremism and violence, which tests the theoretical framework outlined in the first chapter. There is an extensive diachronic scrutiny of the state's response to extremist political parties, violent organizations and the infrastructure of extremism and intolerance within Israeli society. The book emphasises the dynamics of the response and the factors which encourage or discourage the shift from less democratic and more democratic models of response.
