Similarly, giraffes’ height allows them to grab food other animals can’t, but it makes drinking from a pool on the ground very awkward! Readers find out many more cases of extreme animal adaptions and their drawbacks. Fact boxes accompany full-color photographs of each animal, describing the animal’s most interesting physical features as well as their range, size, and lifespan.

Book The Dynamics of Arthopod Predator Prey Systems MPB 13 Volume 13

Download or read book The Dynamics of Arthopod Predator Prey Systems MPB 13 Volume 13 written by Michael Patrick Hassell and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-03-31 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study of arthropod predador-prey systems Michael Hassell shows how many of the components of predation may be simply modeled in order to reveal their effects on the overall dynamics of the interacting populations. Arthropods, particularly insects, make ideal subjects for such a study because their generation times are characteristically short and many have relatively discrete generations, inviting the use of difference equation models to describe population changes. Using analytical models framed in difference equations, Dr. Hassell is able to show how the detailed biological processes of insect predator-prey (including host-parasitoid) interactions may be understood. Emphasizing the development and subsequent stability analysis of general models, the author considers in detail several crucial components of predator-prey models: the prey's rate of increase as a function of density, non-random search, mutual interference, and the predator's rate of increase as a function of predator survival and fecundity. Drawing on the correspondence between the models and field and laboratory data, Dr. Hassell then discusses the practical implications for biological pest control and suggests how such models may help to formulate a theoretical basis for biological control practices.

Book Predators and Parasites

Download or read book Predators and Parasites written by Oded Löwenheim and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2009-05-26 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What explains variance in the policy of Great Powers toward drug traffickers, pirates, and terrorists? Does counterharm policy depend just on the degree of material harm caused to a powerful state by such nonstate actors, or do normative, moral, and emotional factors also play a role? Why did the U.S., for example, harshly punish al Qaeda after 9/11 but avoid taking similar forceful measures against foreign drug traffickers who enable the deaths of thousands of Americans each year by selling highly illegal and harmful narcotics? Oded Löwenheim argues that the answers to these questions lie in the social construction of agents of harm. "Predators and Parasites shows, with impressive scholarship, that world politics is characterized by a cartel-like structure that gives states monopolies of legitimate violence. Sovereignty and a global structure of authority are not mutually exclusive. In a sense, anarchy is in the eye of the beholder." —Robert O. Keohane, Princeton University "An invaluable contribution to the growing body of constructivist literature in international relations and should be read by anyone interested in the use of force in contemporary global politics . . . Goes a long way toward explaining America's War on Terror against al Qaeda and the Taliban and the widespread global support for this policy, as well as the highly negative global reaction to America's own intervention in Iraq and its norm-threatening doctrine of preemption." —Richard W. Mansbach, Iowa State University "Prepare to be boarded! Löwenheim delivers an essential constructivist tutorial on Great Power sovereignty and authority. An intellectual swashbuckler!" —Rodney Bruce Hall, Oxford University "Rejecting preventive war for moral consistency and just conduct, a fascinating discussion of pirates, terrorists, and revenge." —Jon Mercer, University of Washington Oded Löwenheim is Lecturer in the Department of International Relations at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Book Sea Urchins

Download or read book Sea Urchins written by John M. Lawrence and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-05-31 with total page 559 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fully revised and expanded edition of Sea Urchins provides a wide-ranging understanding of the biology and ecology of this key component of the world's oceans. Coverage includes reproduction, metabolism, endocrinology, larval ecology, growth, digestion, carotenoids, disease and nutrition. Other chapters consider the ecology of individual species that are of major importance ecologically and economically, including species from Japan, New Zealand, Australia, Europe, North America, South America and Africa. In addition, six new contributions in areas such as immunology, digestive systems and community ecology inform readers on key recent developments and insights from the literature.Sea urchins are ecologically important and often greatly affect marine communities. Because they have an excellent fossil record, they are also of interest to paleontologists. Research on sea urchins has increased in recent years, stimulated first by recognition of their ecological importance and subsequently their economic importance. Scientists around the world are actively investigating their potential for aquaculture and fisheries, and their value as model systems for investigations in developmental biology continues to increase. Continues the series "Developments in Aquaculture and Fisheries Science" with a newly revised volume Collects and synthesizes the state of knowledge of sea urchin biology and ecology Expanded from previous edition to include non-edible species, providing the needed basis for broader evolutionary understanding of sea urchins
