Book excerpt: This volume constitutes the Proceedings of the joint meeting of GLIM89 and the 4th International Workshop on statistical Modelling, held in Trento, Italy, from 17 to 21 July 1989. The meeting aimed to bring together researchers interested in the development and application of generalized linear modelling in GLIM and those interested in statistical modelling in its widest sense. This joint meeting built upon the success of previous workshops held in Innsbruck, perugia and Vienna, and upon the two previous GLIM conferences , GLIM82 and GLIM85. The Proceedings of the latter two being available as numbers 14 and 32 in the springer Verlag series of Lecture Notes in Statistics). Much statistical modelling is carried out using GLIM, as is apparent from many of the papers in these Proceedings; however, the Programme Committee were also keen on encouraging papers which discussed more general modelling techniques. Thus about a third of the papers in this volume are outside the GLIM framework. The Programme Committee specifically requested non-theoretical papers in addition to considering theoretical contributions. Thus there are papers in a wide range of practical areas, such as radio spectral occupancy, comparison of birthweights, intervals between births, accidents of railway workers, genetics, demography, medical trials, the social sciences and insurance. A wide range of theoretical developments are discussed, for example, overdispersion, non-exponential family modelling, novel approaches to analysing contingency tables, random effects models, Kalman Filtering, model checking and extensions of Wedderburn's theoretical underpinning of GLMs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do people search evidence for a hypothesis? A well documented answer in cognitive psychology is that they search for confirming evidence. However, the rational strategy is to try to falsify the hypothesis. This book critically evaluates this contradiction. Experimental research is discussed against the background of philosophical and formal theories of hypothesis testing with striking results: Falsificationism and verificationism - the two main rival philosophies of testing - come down to one and the same principle for concrete testing behaviour, eluding the contrast between rational falsification and confirmation bias. In this book, the author proposes a new perspective for describing hypothesis testing behaviour - the probability-value model - which unifies the contrasting views. According to this model, hypothesis testers pragmatically consider what evidence and how much evidence will convince them to reject or accept the hypothesis. They might either require highly probative evidence for its acceptance, at the risk of its rejection, or protect it against rejection and go for minor confirming observations. Interestingly, the model refines the classical opposition between rationality and pragmaticity because pragmatic considerations are a legitimate aspect of 'rational' hypothesis testing. Possible future research and applications of the ideas advanced are discussed, such as the modelling of expert hypothesis testing.

Book excerpt: The urgent need to describe and to solve certain problems connected to extreme phenomena in various areas of applications has been of decisive influence on the vital development of extreme value theory. After the pioneering work of M. Frechet (1927) and of R.A. Fisher and L.R.C. Tippett (1928), who discovered the limiting distributions of extremes, the importance of mathematical concepts of extreme behavior in applications was impressively demonstrated by statisticians like E.J. Gumbel and W. Weibull. The predominant role of applied aspects in that early period may be highlighted by the fact that two of the "Fisher-Tippett asymptotes" also carry the names of Gumbel and Weibull. In the last years, the complexity of problems and their tractability by mathematical methods stimulated a rapid development of mathematical theory that substantially helped to improve our understanding of extreme behavior. Due to the depth and richness of mathematical ideas, extreme value theory has become more and more of interest for mathematically oriented research workers. This was one of the reasons to organize a conference on extreme value theory which was held at the Mathematische Forschungsinstitut at Oberwolfach (FRG) in December 1987.
