Book Devotion

Download or read book Devotion written by Adam Makos and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2017-03-21 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • NOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE • From America’s “forgotten war” in Korea comes an unforgettable tale of courage by the author of A Higher Call. “In the spirit of Unbroken and The Boys in the Boat comes Devotion.”—Associated Press • “Aerial drama at its best—fast, powerful, and moving.”—Erik Larson Devotion tells the inspirational story of the U.S. Navy’s most famous aviation duo, Lieutenant Tom Hudner and Ensign Jesse Brown, and the Marines they fought to defend. A white New Englander from the country-club scene, Tom passed up Harvard to fly fighters for his country. An African American sharecropper’s son from Mississippi, Jesse became the navy’s first Black carrier pilot, defending a nation that wouldn’t even serve him in a bar. While much of America remained divided by segregation, Jesse and Tom joined forces as wingmen in Fighter Squadron 32. Adam Makos takes us into the cockpit as these bold young aviators cut their teeth at the world’s most dangerous job—landing on the deck of an aircraft carrier—a line of work that Jesse’s young wife, Daisy, struggles to accept. Deployed to the Mediterranean, Tom and Jesse meet the Fleet Marines, boys like PFC “Red” Parkinson, a farm kid from the Catskills. In between war games in the sun, the young men revel on the Riviera, partying with millionaires and even befriending the Hollywood starlet Elizabeth Taylor. Then comes the conflict that no one expected: the Korean War. Devotion takes us soaring overhead with Tom and Jesse, and into the foxholes with Red and the Marines as they battle a North Korean invasion. As the fury of the fighting escalates and the Marines are cornered at the Chosin Reservoir, Tom and Jesse fly, guns blazing, to try and save them. When one of the duo is shot down behind enemy lines and pinned in his burning plane, the other faces an unthinkable choice: watch his friend die or attempt history’s most audacious one-man rescue mission. A tug-at-the-heartstrings tale of bravery and selflessness, Devotion asks: How far would you go to save a friend?

Book Shared Devotion Shared Food

Download or read book Shared Devotion Shared Food written by Jon Keune and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-04-22 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Hindu devotional or bhakti traditions welcomed marginalized people-women, low castes, and Dalits-were they promoting social equality? In this book, Jon Keune deftly examines the root of this deceptively simple question. The modern formulation of the bhakti-caste question is what Dalit leader B. R. Ambedkar had in mind when he concluded that the saints promoted spiritual equality but did not transform society. While taking Ambedkar's judgment seriously, Jon Keune argues that, when viewed in the context of intellectual history and social practice, the bhakti-caste question is more complex. Shared Devotion, Shared Food explores how people in western India wrestled for centuries with two competing values: a theological vision that God welcomes all people, and the social hierarchy of the caste system. Keune examines the ways in which food and stories about food were important sites where this debate played out, particularly when people of high and low social status ate together. By studying Marathi manuscripts, nineteenth-century publications, plays, and films, Shared Devotion, Shared Food reveals how the question of caste, inclusivity, and equality was formulated in different ways over the course of three centuries, and it explores why social equality remains so elusive in practice.

Book Walk through the Bible with Me A Practical Devotion

Download or read book Walk through the Bible with Me A Practical Devotion written by Michael Slaughter and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2016-11-04 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I have heard many people say, "I read my Bible but I just don't get anything out of it." So, I decided to share my Bible journal with my church in the hope that they would read through the Bible with me. In the process, I shared a lot of life and admittedly plenty of funny stories about my life and experiences. I had to include them because I didn't want this to be purely an academic exercise. I wanted it to be a practical devotion that touches real life. While they were reading through with me, many of them told me that I needed to get it published. That's why it's sitting on the shelves today. There are plenty of ways to read through the Bible. I started out reading cover to cover for years. From there I moved to a Chronological Bible plan. Then one day, a pastor friend of mine gave me a Life Journal. It takes you through the Old Testament once and the New Testament twice throughout the year. I like this plan because every day, you get some of the New Testament. Even if you don't decide to read this plan or my book; please choose to read through the Bible some way. God's Word in your life is what I pray for you.

Book Sharon Osbourne Extreme

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sharon Osbourne reveals the truth behind the headlines in her characteristically frank, intimate and articulate memoir-from her childhood as the daughter of Don Arden, to managing and marrying Ozzy Osbourne, to her rising fame on shows such as The Osbournes and The X Factor. A devoted wife and mother, businesswoman, TV star and award-winning producer, Sharon Osbourne has, in her own words, "lived fifty lives in fifty years". Her childhood with her father, the notorious rock manager Don Arden, was an unruly mix of glamour and violence. In her late 20s, Sharon finally made the painful decision to break with her family. Always irrepressible, Sharon flourished, creating a loving family of her own while becoming a legendary manager and rock band promoter. In rock star Ozzy Osbourne, Sharon found her soul mate, yet Ozzy's drug and drink-fueled excesses-which culminated in his attempt to strangle her-made their marriage a white-knuckle ride from the start. Only her devotion to their three children gave her the will to survive. From the tremendous highs of the hit show The Osbournes to the devastating lows of Ozzy's near-fatal quad-bike accident and her own bout with colon cancer, Sharon's tenacity, honesty, and humor have triumphed again and again.
