Book excerpt: Excerpt from Extracts From Reports Upon Pure Water Supply for the City of Ottawa, 1911 We find the Water of the Ottawa River, which is the pres ent source of supply, to be polluted and unfit for a public supply either at the present intake or at any other point where the intake could reasonably be placed. We are of the opinion that the pollution will increase and not diminish. The Hypochlorite treatment now in use greatly improves the supply by destroying the bacteria. It does not remove the color or other organic impurities. In other words it disinfects but does not clean up the water as must be done in order to make it acceptable as a public water supply. For these rea sons its use must be considered a temporary measure and not a permanent solution of the water problem. No system of sand filtration, either simple or multiple without chemical treatment. Is capable of removing the colour and the excessive amount of organic matter in the Ottawa River water. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on Schemes for an Additional Supply of Pure Water On the order to ascertain the purity of the water of Charles river, at the point where it would be expedient to take 132, the City Engineer submits the results of analyses made at differ ent times during the past forty years, by well-known chem ists. The able report by Prof. W. R. Nichols, made last year to the State Board of Health, on the present condition of certain rivers in Massachusetts, is printed in full in the Appendix. It is evident. That the water of Charles river should be held in reservoirs for some time before it is used, and possibly it would require filtration unless important changes were made in the drainage area. It appears from accurate surveys of the Mystic Water-shed (made under the authority of fourth order), that it covers an area of square miles, being l0g per cent. Less than the area given by the Engineer of the Mystic Water Works, and per cent. More than that given by Messrs. Kirkwood Francis. The information in relation to the damages which would accrue to the mill property on Charles and Sudbury rivers, by the use of the waters of those rivers (appended to this report), is furnished by Messrs. Warren Adams of your committee, who, by practical experience, were peculiarly qualified to perform that duty.
