Book Extraction of Essential Oils from Jasmine Flower Using Supercritical Co2 Co solvent Extraction

Download or read book Extraction of Essential Oils from Jasmine Flower Using Supercritical Co2 Co solvent Extraction written by Norulshahida Che Din and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pure essential oils are derived from various part of the plant. These essential oils have a very high commercial value due to its properties. They are widely used in the various fields of industries, such as perfumery industries and pharmaceuticals. Conventional technique to extracts this oil such as steam distillation is unsuitable since it induce thermal degradation of compounds in the oils. It is for this reason that the extraction of essential oils using supercritical fluid extraction method is said to be the most effective method. It also can avoid contamination of the oil. This extraction technique employed carbon dioxide (CO2) as solvent due to CO2 is stateless, odorless, non-toxic and chemical inertness and would not contaminate the environment and products. Thus, the material residues can be used without pretreatment. Beside that, the low critical properties make CO2 the most preferable solvent in this technique. The used of co-solvent also affect the extraction of these essential oils because it could modify the CO2 selectivity towards the fragrances compound. This can in turn produce higher quantity of products. For this purpose, two co-solvent had been employed, viz. ethanol and methanol.

Book Extraction of Essential Oils from Jasmine Flower Using Solvent Extraction Method

Download or read book Extraction of Essential Oils from Jasmine Flower Using Solvent Extraction Method written by Mohd. Faisal Sulong@A Rashid and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jasmine essential oils are primarily used in the perfumery industry and have a very high commercial value due to its therapeutic properties. As Jasmine essential oils are composed of heat-sensitive chemical compounds, the use of conventional steam distillation technique would inevitably inflict thermal degradation to the natural fragrance. In this experimental work, solvent extraction method was employed due to its mild extracting condition and lower operating cost. Two different solvents were used, which are ethanol and methanol, respectively. The extract compositions were compared using gas chromatography analysis. Preliminary results showed that volatile oil compounds were successfully isolated from Jasmine flowers using these solvents. It was found that the main constituents of the essential oils were benzyl acetate and benzyldehyde. Further studies also revealed that the composition and yield of essential oils was mainly influenced by the different types of solvents used. The most optimum yield which is 14.53% was extracted using ethanol. Low yield of the jasmine essential oils can be improved in future study by carrying out the research in larger scale.

The raw materials were dried at room temperature (30 ± 2C) for 5 days. The dried leaves were cut in pieces of 1cm () or 3cm of length ( and ). The fixed bed was packed with 87 ± 1g, 68 ± 2g, and 64 ± 2 g of , , and , respectively. The extractions were performed at 16C and 70 bar (condition 1) and 25C and 160 bar (condition 2). A static period of 60 minutes was used. The experiments were performed in duplicate. The extraction yields varied with material and operational conditions. For the extract the yield was 0.31% for condition 1 and 0.68% for condition 2. The yield was 0.45% and 0.99% for conditions 1 and 2 for . The yields for the extracts were 0.07% and 0.20% for conditions 1 and 2, respectively. The SC extraction yields were less than that of steam distillation (: 2.50%; : 2.15%; : 1.39%) for all samples. The chemical composition of the extracts was analyzed by GC-MS.

This book was released on 2014 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essential oil is the botanical extracts from various plant materials. The essential oils nowadays had been commercialized due to its thousands of benefits. On the other hand, Jasmine flowers had been known for its fragrance value for ages. Jasmine primarily used in perfumery industry because of its therapeutic properties. Basically, there are two types of Jasmine Essential oils, named Jasmine Concrete and Jasmine Absolute. Jasmine Absolute is the pure Jasmine essential oil processed from Jasmine concrete. Same like the other flowers, Jasmine flowers will undergo essential phases of bud, bloom and wilt. In order to get best properties for Jasmine absolute, this thesis will study about the different conditions of Jasmine flowers that will be affected the composition Jasmine absolute. To produce a Jasmine Absolute, method solvent extraction was used as it will give high yield and low cost. In this solvent extraction method, Hexane was used as the solvent. Once the concrete was obtained, it will be mixed with ethanol and then will undergo freezing and distillation process. The properties of each different condition will be then analysed using GC analysis. Based on the analysis, the dry condition give the best qualitative analysis meanwhile the bloom condition give the best quantitative analysis.
