Book Travels in America Performed in 1806

Download or read book Travels in America Performed in 1806 written by Thomas Ashe and published by . This book was released on 1808 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although agreement is general that Ashe usually stretched the truth in the direction of the vicious and spiteful, authorities also laud his account as being highly readable and interesting. His chief interest was in archaeological remains, but he takes to task the men of America, including references to some Missourians as having "stupid insensibility." He did think the women of America far superior to any he had encountered in Europe. He found the climate in New Orleans so disagreeable that he states that "an average of nine strangers die out of ten shortly after their arrival." Ashe liked the Ohio and Mississippi Valleys, and his description of them is generally credible.

Book The Unknown Travels and Dubious Pursuits of William Clark

Download or read book The Unknown Travels and Dubious Pursuits of William Clark written by Jo Ann Trogdon and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 2016-06-30 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1798—more than five years before he led the epic western journey that would make him and Meriwether Lewis national heroes—William Clark set off by flatboat from his Louisville, Kentucky home with a cargo of tobacco and furs to sell downriver in Spanish New Orleans. He also carried with him a leather-trimmed journal to record his travels and notes on his activities. In this vivid history, Jo Ann Trogdon reveals William Clark’s highly questionable activities during the years before his famous journey west of the Mississippi. Delving into the details of Clark’s diary and ledger entries, Trogdon investigates evidence linking Clark to a series of plots—often called the Spanish Conspiracy—in which corrupt officials sought to line their pockets with Spanish money and to separate Kentucky from the United States. The Unknown Travels and Dubious Pursuits of William Clark gives readers a more complex portrait of the American icon than has been previously written.

Book Inventing the American Guitar

Download or read book Inventing the American Guitar written by James Westbrook and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2013-10-01 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inventing the American Guitar is the first book to describe the early history of American guitar design in detail. It tells the story of how a European instrument was transformed into one with all of the design and construction features that define the iconic American flat-top guitar. This transformation happened within a mere 20 years, a remarkably brief period. The person who dominates this history is C. F. Martin Sr., America's first major guitar maker and the founder of the Martin Guitar Company, which continues to produce outstanding flat-top guitars today. After emigrating from his native Saxony to New York in 1833, Martin quickly established a guitar making business, producing instruments modeled after those of his mentor, Johann Stauffer of Vienna. By the time he moved his family and business to rural Pennsylvania in 1839, Martin had absorbed and integrated the influence of Spanish guitars he had seen and heard in New York. In Pennsylvania, he evolved further, inventing a uniquely American guitar that was fully developed before the outbreak of the Civil War. Inventing the American Guitar traces Martin's evolution as a craftsman and entrepreneur and explores the influences and experiments that led to his creation of the American guitar that is recognized and played around the world today.
