Book Extra illustrated Copy of With the Serbs in Macedonia by Douglas Walshe

Download or read book Extra illustrated Copy of With the Serbs in Macedonia by Douglas Walshe written by and published by . This book was released on 1920 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extra-illustrated copy of With the Serbs in Macedonia by Douglas Walshe (London: John Lane The Bodley Head; New York: John Lane Company, MCMXX [1920]), containing Walshe's account of the British campaign in the Balkans while serving with the 708 Company Motor Transport attached to the Serbian Army in Macedonia during World War I, enhanced with 59 gelatin silver snapshots by Margaret English, a British Army nursing sister. The Allied Powers, principally Britain and France, had set up the Macedonian Front based in Salonika (now Thessalonikē) to protect Serbia from attack by Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Bulgaria; and English was assigned here, to the 37th General Hospital near Vertekop (now Skydra) during 1917-1919. English used her copy of Walshe's book as a scrapbook, affixing 55 small snapshots on the empty versos of the nine plates, blank endleaves, and blank portions of text pages; an additional four snapshots are laid in, as well as an undated newspaper clipping (probably from the late 1930s or early 1940s) containing an extract from Demosthenes's address to the Athenians on the occupation by the armies of Philip II of Macedon, drawing a parallel to Hitler's identical tactics of threats, occupation, and eventual take-over. The photographs document her life at 37th General Hospital, a tented village with 1600 beds, and one of five British hospitals on the Salonika front, serving wounded Serbs and Bulgarian prisoners of war who would arrive by train at the nearby station. One photo shows a line of French soldiers doing their laundry. Also included are two long view of the hospital's rows of white tents as seen from the railway station; and an aerial shot of the hospital, its borders clearly marked with large red crosses visible from the air. Another photo of two troopships suggests that English sailed to Alexandria aboard the British transport ship, H.M.T. "Saxon," where she boarded the H.M.T. "Menominee" for the final leg of the voyage to Salonika. Many of the photos are groups of English's co-workers--other military nurses, doctors, and officers (Major Alfred Barnes, Captain Greenwood, Sisters Hughes and Garrett)--standing in front of their tents, celebrating Boxing Day in 1917, or on leave at Lake Ostrovo in western Macedonia; as well as the Serbian patients they treated. Other photos portray the isolation of the hospital village amid rugged mountains, accessible by rutted unpaved roads, the closest towns being Vertekop and Vodena, poor villages of stone walls, unpaved streets, and open sewers. Peasants work herding sheep, driving donkeys, gathering charcoal and firewood, and women spin wool yarn as they walk or go about their chores, a drop spindle in their free hand. There are also shots of a farmer tilling his field with a primitive wooden plow pulled by two oxen, a street vendor selling the drink known as "sherbert" from a large pitcher on his back, and a Macedonian man in typical dress standing in front of his shop in Vodena. English photographed the ornate gilded interior of the church at Vodena, and the 14th-century Byzantine Church of the Holy Apostles in Salonika, as well as the graves of nurses killed during a German bombing of the hospital that took place on March 12, 1917. On the back of one of the photos, dated Feb. 1919, English notes that it is her "last day at 37."

Book Violent Non state Actors in World Politics

Download or read book Violent Non state Actors in World Politics written by Kledja Mulaj and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2008 attacks on Mumbai were carried out by a Pakistani militant group known as Lashkar i-Taiba, termed a "non-state actor" by Pakistan's president, Asif Zardari. In most cases, violent non-state actors (VNSAs) rise as a state fails, resorting to brutally effective, organized attacks to advance political aims and other goals. Currently operating in Afghanistan, Lebanon, Somalia, and Sudan, VNSAs can take the form of national liberation movements confronting an occupying force, insurgents engaged in protracted political and military struggles that chip away at a government's legitimacy, terrorists who threaten violence to effect political change, irregular yet recognizable armed forces working within an ungoverned area or failing state, and mercenary militias, such as those used by Shell or army-loaded units operating in the Niger Delta. The essays in this volume map follow the political, economic, and social processes behind the emergence of VNSAs and the way in which they manipulate crises. Contributors isolate the point at which violence becomes desirable to the non-state actor and explore how this change alters the relationship between VNSAs and the state, and they track the influence of VNSAs on the rebuilding of the very governments they tear down. One of the first resources to describe these groups in depth, this volume decodes the internal structure of VNSAs, their recruitment strategies and ideologies, their characteristics and partnerships, and their fundamental similarities and differences.

Book Militarized Cultural Encounters in the Long Nineteenth Century

Download or read book Militarized Cultural Encounters in the Long Nineteenth Century written by Joseph Clarke and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-08-22 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores European soldiers’ encounters with their continent’s exotic frontiers from the French Revolution to the First World War. In numerous military expeditions to Italy, Spain, Russia, Greece and the ‘Levant’ they found wild landscapes and strange societies inhabited by peoples who needed to be ‘civilized.’ Yet often they also discovered founding sites of Europe’s own ‘civilization’ (Rome, Jerusalem) or decaying reminders of ancient grandeur. The resulting encounters proved seminal in forging a military version of the ‘civilizing mission’ that shaped Europe’s image of itself as well as its relations with its own periphery during the long nineteenth century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive textbook covers all major topics related to the utilization of mineral resources for human activities. It begins with general concepts like definitions of mineral resources, mineral resources and humans, recycling mineral resources, distribution of minerals resources across Earth, and international standards in mining, among others. Then it turns to a classification of mineral resources, covering the main types from a geological standpoint. The exploration of mineral resources is also treated, including geophysical methods of exploration, borehole geophysical logging, geochemical methods, drilling methods, and mineral deposit models in exploration. Further, the book addresses the evaluation of mineral resources, from sampling techniques to the economic evaluation of mining projects (i.e. types and density of sampling, mean grade definition and calculation, Sichel’s estimator, evaluation methods – classical and geostatistical, economic evaluation – NPV, IRR, and PP, estimation of risk, and software for evaluating mineral resources). It subsequently describes key mineral resource exploitation methods (open pit and underground mining) and the mineral processing required to obtain saleable products (crushing, grinding, sizing, ore separation, and concentrate dewatering, also with some text devoted to tailings dams). Lastly, the book discusses the environmental impact of mining, covering all the aspects of this very important topic, from the description of diverse impacts to the environmental impact assessment (EIA), which is essential in modern mining projects.
