Book The Deep Proterozoic Crust in the North Atlantic Provinces

Download or read book The Deep Proterozoic Crust in the North Atlantic Provinces written by Alex C. Tobi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 601 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Proterozoic terrains of South Scandinavia and the Grenville Province in North-America have many common features : Regional high grade metamorphism (Granulite-facies), anorthosites, etc. They are separated by the Caledonian orogeny and, above all, by the Atlantic Ocean. During the time of the great continental drift controversy, few people were ready to admit that both sides on the Atlantic were once an unique province. Now everybody agrees on the Post-paleozoic age of the Atlantic and, consequently, on the intrinsic homogeneity of the much older. rocks which occur around it. But a detailed comparison is not easy. The Grenville Province is much larger than South Scandinavia, both regions have been investigated by a great number of different schools, using various methods, approaches and concepts. After several attempts, and long discussion, it was felt by a small group of individuals, that literature study would not be enough and that nothing could re place the direct contact, in the field, of specialists who had a first hand knowledge of all involved regions. The formula of a NATO Advanced Study Institute, which gives a unique opportunity to meet and mix people of various origin and levels, came almost by itself. Much work was needed, much help has been obtained, as detailed in the "Acknowledgements".

Book Progress in Metamorphic and Magmatic Petrology

Download or read book Progress in Metamorphic and Magmatic Petrology written by L. L. Perchuk and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of review articles by eminent petrologists, summarizing recent scientific achievements in this field. The papers address the physico-chemical conditions of the origin of crystalline rocks as well as characteristics of their mineral assemblages. The book is divided into three main sections: Section 1 covers general thermodynamics and mineral equilibria; Section 2 covers metamorphic and metasomatic processes; and the final section discusses the mantle and magmatic processes.

Book Precambrian Conterminous U S

Download or read book Precambrian Conterminous U S written by John C. Reed, Jr. and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 1993 with total page 752 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This wide-ranging discussion of Precambrian rocks includes contributions from a diverse array of authors actively engaged in investigations of various aspects of U.S. Precambrian geology. Summary discussions by the editors of the five major chapters place these contributions in a logical regional framework.

Book excerpt: Sediment Provenance: Influences on Compositional Change from Source to Sink provides a thorough and inclusive overview that features data-based case studies on a broad range of dynamic aspects in sedimentary rock structure and deposition. Provenance data plays a critical role in a number of aspects of sedimentary rocks, including the assessment of palaeogeographic reconstructions, the constraints of lateral displacements in orogens, the characterization of crust which is no longer exposed, the mapping of depositional systems, sub-surface correlation, and in predicting reservoir quality. The provenance of fine-grained sediments—on a global scale—has been used to monitor crustal evolution, and sediment transport is paramount in considering restoration techniques for both watershed and river restoration. Transport is responsible for erosion, bank undercutting, sandbar formation, aggradation, gullying, and plugging, as well as bed form migration and generation of primary sedimentary structures. Additionally, the quest for reservoir quality in contemporary hydrocarbon exploration and extraction necessitates a deliberate focus on diagenesis. This book addresses all of these challenges and arms geoscientists with an all-in-one reference to sedimentary rocks, from source to deposition. - Provides the latest data available on various aspects of sedimentary rocks from their source to deposition - Features case studies throughout that illustrate new data and critical analyses of published data by some of the world's most pre-eminent sedimentologists - Includes more than 150 illustrations, photos, figures, and diagrams that underscore key concepts
