Book Drug Treatment Systems in an International Perspective

Download or read book Drug Treatment Systems in an International Perspective written by Harald Klingemann and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 1998-08-11 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first volume to provide access to information on drug treatment systems from a wide cross-section of 20 countries, Drug Treatment Systems in an International Perspective examines the ways in which other counties from around the world have chosen to cope with the spread of illicit drugs. Now health planners and administrators, treatment professionals, researchers, and students can place the development of their own treatment systems in a wider context and can examine the extent to which that development shares common structural features with those of other countries and cultures. Following a comparative discussion of the various countries, the volume addresses four key issues: gender specific treatment, the politics of financing and evaluation, the private sector and state control, and exporting drug treatment ideologies. It provides a comparative and cross-cultural perspective on drug treatment approaches today and examines the influence of social, political, and economic forces on the treatment of drug addicts. In addition, the editors have included a handy glossary, which explains key terms unfamiliar to readers outside the particular country. Providing and interdisciplinary and cross-cultural perspective to drug treatment, Drug Treatment Systems in an International Perspective will be of interest academics, students, and professionals in psychology, especially those focusing on clinical psychology, addiction, dependency, and treatment. It will also be of great interest to public health planners and administrators.

Book Psychiatric Services for Addicted Patients

Download or read book Psychiatric Services for Addicted Patients written by American Psychiatric Association and published by American Psychiatric Pub. This book was released on 1995 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The original task force report, completed in the summer of 1994, reflected the current state of addiction treatment and provided recommendations for improving these services in the future. That monograph is reproduced in this book, which accomplishes the following: * Define psychiatrists' current roles and practices in the treatment of substance-dependent patients in relationship to that of other practitioners, with particular attention to issues such as dual diagnosis, methadone treatment, and detoxification* Develop suggestions for appropriate funding mechanisms for the payment of addicted patients' treatment in the context of managed care and indemnity benefit programs* Examine issues related to the funding of public sector programs, including funding of Department of Veterans Affairs programs, block grant funding of state and city programs, as well as funding of voluntary treatment programs within and outside the criminal justice system. This book is divided into four sections. Chapter 1 reviews the history of American psychiatry's interest in addiction disorders and the development of the current network of addiction treatment services. Chapter 2 is a snapshot of the current addiction treatment system, with a description of the services provided in general medical settings, psychiatric hospitals, freestanding residential facilities, and private practice and other outpatient settings. Chapter 3 explores the economics of the treatment system: the costs of addictive diseases to American society and the costs and sources of support for their treatment. Chapter 4 examines the range of system modifications and resource allocations needed to bring high quality, cost-effective treatment to addicted patients and their families. These needs range from improving data collection and treatment research to increasing community involvement and the application of current research findings.

Book excerpt: The large federal role in the drug treatment system was substantially reduced in the early 1980s, undercutting its ability to help communities respond to new challenges such as the crack-cocaine epidemic and the growing violence in drug markets. How can drug treatment dollars be spent most equitably with the highest likelihood of beneficial results? With this basic question as its focus, Treating Drug Problems, Volume 1 provides specific recommendations on how to organize and fund the drug treatment system. Detailed attention is given to both public and private sources and their programs. The book presents the latest data and analysis on these topics and more: How specific approaches to drug treatment fit into drug policy, including the different perspectives of the medical and criminal-justice communities. What is known about drug consumption behavior and what treatment approaches have proven most cost-beneficial. What areas need further research-including specifications for increased study of treatment effectiveness and drug use by adolescents and young women.
