Book Extensive Study of Low Fatigue Crack Growth Rates in A533 and A508 Steels

Download or read book Extensive Study of Low Fatigue Crack Growth Rates in A533 and A508 Steels written by RJ. Bucci and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For two heats of ASTM A533 Grade B Class 1 pressure vessel steel and an ASTM A508 Class 2 forged steel, an extensive study of fatigue crack growth rate characteristics was conducted within the framework of linear elastic fracture mechanics. Experimental data obtained covered a wide variation in cyclic growth rates ranging from those associated with fatigue threshold (order of 10-9 in./cycle) up to rapid fracture. The bulk of experimental information obtained was at very low cracking rates, usually 10-6 in./cycle and below. Considered in the investigation were: (1) an evaluation of the effect of stress ratio, R = ?min/?max, on verv slow rates of fatigue crack extension; (2) an evaluation of temperature (75 to 650 F) on very slow rates of fatigue cracking; (3) an examination of the combined effects of temperature and stress ratio and their influence on fatigue crack extension; (4) an evaluation of the effect of a distilled water environment on fatigue crack propagation rates; (5) an examination of the effects of specimen thickness; and (6) a comparison of results for two separate heats of the same alloy.

Book A Critical Analysis of Grain Size and Yield Strength Dependence of Near Threshold Fatigue Crack Growth in Steels

Download or read book A Critical Analysis of Grain Size and Yield Strength Dependence of Near Threshold Fatigue Crack Growth in Steels written by G. R. Yoder and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though a number of investigators have examined the influence of microstructural variables on near-threshold fatigue-crack growth rates in steels, a comprehensive understanding of the dependence of near-threshold growth rates on grain size, yield strength and microstructural morphology in steels has yet to emerge -- as noted in an excellent review by Ritchie. Recently, however, from our own extensive studies with alpha/beta titanium alloys, the basis for microstructural dependence of widely different fatigue crack growth rates was established for titanium alloys. Inasmuch as the micromechanistic model from that work does not depend uniquely on alloy family, it is of great interest to explore its applicability to steels -- especially since it predicts quantitatively the influence of yield strength and grain size in the near-threshold region for steels. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to critically analyze the near-threshold fatigue crack growth behavior, as reported in the literature, for steels of widely different strength level, grain size and microstructural morphology -- in the search for a systematic ordering of near-threshold fatigue crack growth rates that pertains to the whole gamut of steels. Book Effects of Strength and Grain Size on Near threshold Fatigue Crack Growth in Ultra high Strength Steel

Download or read book Effects of Strength and Grain Size on Near threshold Fatigue Crack Growth in Ultra high Strength Steel written by and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue tests were performed on ultra-high strength steels to assess (i) the influence of strength at constant grain size, and (ii) the influence of grain size at constant strength, on threshold stress intensity and near-threshold crack propagation rates. The results constitute part of a larger program of research to characterize the microstructural influences on fatigue crack propagation at growth rates less than 10−5 mm/cycle in an attempt to provide a basis for the design of alloys resistant to low growth rate fatigue failure.

Book Fatigue Crack Growth Behavior of a High Strength Steel

Download or read book Fatigue Crack Growth Behavior of a High Strength Steel written by Maurice F. Amateau and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue crack growth behavior of high-strength Ladish D6AC steel was examined under various conditions of frequency, environment, temperature, stress ratio, and stress intensity history. Materials with fracture toughness ranging from 50 to 100 ksi/sq. in., but with the same yield strength of 220 ksi, were examined. Variations in fracture thoughness do not have a strong effect on crack growth rate at stress intensity levels within the log-linear portion of the crack growth curves. Different environments, such as dry air, laboratory air, and distilled water, were found to produce different fatigue crack growth behavior at 1 Hz but not at 10 Hz loading frequency. The lowest crack growth rate occurred in dry air, while the aggressive environment of distilled water affected the crack growth rate more severly at lower stress intensity levels. The effects of temperature over the range from -40 to 175F are a uniform shift of the growth curve to low crack growth rates and a lowering of the stress intensity level for the onset of rapid fatigue crack propagation. Suppression of crack growth rate following high prior stress cycles is the most significant effect of stress history. This effect cannot be explained in terms of the relative plastic zone sizes alone. (Author).

Book Fatigue Crack Growth Rate Properties of SA508 and SA533 Pressure Vessel Steels and Submerged Arc Weldments in a Pressurized Water Environment

Download or read book Fatigue Crack Growth Rate Properties of SA508 and SA533 Pressure Vessel Steels and Submerged Arc Weldments in a Pressurized Water Environment written by WA. Logsdon and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Stage II fatigue crack growth rate (FCGR) properties of four base materials (SA508 Class 2a; SA533 Grade A, Class 2; SA508 Class 3a; and SA533 Grade B, Class 2 steels) and two automatic submerged-arc weldments (SA508 Class 2a and SA533 Grade A, Class 2) were developed in a pressurized water environment at 288°C (550°F) and 13.8 MPa (2000 psi) at load ratios of 0.20 and 0.50. The pressurized water environment FCGR properties of these four pressure vessel steels and two submerged-arc weldments were generally conservative compared with the appropriate American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Section XI water environment reference curve. The growth rate of fatigue cracks in the four base materials, however, was considerably faster in the pressurized water environment than in a corresponding 288°C (550°F) baseline air environment. The growth rate of fatigue cracks in the two submerged-arc weldments was also accelerated in the pressurized water environment but to a lesser degree than that demonstrated by the corresponding base materials. In the air environment, fatigue striations were observed independent of the material and load ratio, while in the pressurized water environment some intergranular facets were present. The greater environmental effect on crack growth rates displayed by the base materials in comparison with the weldments was attributed to a different sulfide composition and morphology.
