Book A Course in Homological Algebra

Download or read book A Course in Homological Algebra written by P.J. Hilton and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this chapter we are largely influenced in our choice of material by the demands of the rest of the book. However, we take the view that this is an opportunity for the student to grasp basic categorical notions which permeate so much of mathematics today, including, of course, algebraic topology, so that we do not allow ourselves to be rigidly restricted by our immediate objectives. A reader totally unfamiliar with category theory may find it easiest to restrict his first reading of Chapter II to Sections 1 to 6; large parts of the book are understandable with the material presented in these sections. Another reader, who had already met many examples of categorical formulations and concepts might, in fact, prefer to look at Chapter II before reading Chapter I. Of course the reader thoroughly familiar with category theory could, in principal, omit Chapter II, except perhaps to familiarize himself with the notations employed. In Chapter III we begin the proper study of homological algebra by looking in particular at the group ExtA(A, B), where A and Bare A-modules. It is shown how this group can be calculated by means of a projective presentation of A, or an injective presentation of B; and how it may also be identified with the group of equivalence classes of extensions of the quotient module A by the submodule B.

Download or read book Representations of Algebraic Groups written by Jens Carsten Jantzen and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now back in print by the AMS, this is a significantly revised edition of a book originally published in 1987 by Academic Press. This book gives the reader an introduction to the theory of algebraic representations of reductive algebraic groups. To develop appropriate techniques, the first part of the book is an introduction to the general theory of representations of algebraic group schemes. Here, the author describes important basic notions: induction functors, cohomology, quotients, Frobenius kernels, and reduction mod $p$, among others. The second part of the book is devoted to the representation theory of reductive algebraic groups. It includes topics such as the description of simple modules, vanishing theorems, the Borel-Bott-Weil theorem and Weyl's character formula, andSchubert schemes and line bundles on them. For this revised edition the author added nearly 150 pages of new material describing some later developments, among them Schur algebras, Lusztig's conjecture and Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials, tilting modules, and representations of quantum groups. He also made major revisions to parts of the old text. Jantzen's book continues to be the ultimate source of information on representations of algebraic groups in finite characteristics. It is suitable forgraduate students and research mathematicians interested in algebraic groups and their representations.

Book The Arcata Conference on Representations of Finite Groups Part 1

Download or read book The Arcata Conference on Representations of Finite Groups Part 1 written by Paul Fong and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1987 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers in these proceedings of the 1986 Arcata Summer Institute bear witness to the extraordinarily vital and intense research in the representation theory of finite groups. The confluence of diverse mathematical disciplines has brought forth work of great scope and depth. Particularly striking is the influence of algebraic geometry and cohomology theory in the modular representation theory and the character theory of reductive groups over finite fields, and in the general modular representation theory of finite groups. The continuing developments in block theory and the general character theory of finite groups is noteworthy. The expository and research aspects of the Summer Institute are well represented by these papers.

Book An Introduction to Homological Algebra

Download or read book An Introduction to Homological Algebra written by Charles A. Weibel and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1995-10-27 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The landscape of homological algebra has evolved over the last half-century into a fundamental tool for the working mathematician. This book provides a unified account of homological algebra as it exists today. The historical connection with topology, regular local rings, and semi-simple Lie algebras are also described. This book is suitable for second or third year graduate students. The first half of the book takes as its subject the canonical topics in homological algebra: derived functors, Tor and Ext, projective dimensions and spectral sequences. Homology of group and Lie algebras illustrate these topics. Intermingled are less canonical topics, such as the derived inverse limit functor lim1, local cohomology, Galois cohomology, and affine Lie algebras. The last part of the book covers less traditional topics that are a vital part of the modern homological toolkit: simplicial methods, Hochschild and cyclic homology, derived categories and total derived functors. By making these tools more accessible, the book helps to break down the technological barrier between experts and casual users of homological algebra.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Algebraic groups play much the same role for algebraists as Lie groups play for analysts. This book is the first comprehensive introduction to the theory of algebraic group schemes over fields that includes the structure theory of semisimple algebraic groups, and is written in the language of modern algebraic geometry. The first eight chapters study general algebraic group schemes over a field and culminate in a proof of the Barsotti–Chevalley theorem, realizing every algebraic group as an extension of an abelian variety by an affine group. After a review of the Tannakian philosophy, the author provides short accounts of Lie algebras and finite group schemes. The later chapters treat reductive algebraic groups over arbitrary fields, including the Borel–Chevalley structure theory. Solvable algebraic groups are studied in detail. Prerequisites have also been kept to a minimum so that the book is accessible to non-specialists in algebraic geometry.

Book On Non Generic Finite Subgroups of Exceptional Algebraic Groups

Download or read book On Non Generic Finite Subgroups of Exceptional Algebraic Groups written by Alastair J. Litterick and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2018-05-29 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of finite subgroups of a simple algebraic group $G$ reduces in a sense to those which are almost simple. If an almost simple subgroup of $G$ has a socle which is not isomorphic to a group of Lie type in the underlying characteristic of $G$, then the subgroup is called non-generic. This paper considers non-generic subgroups of simple algebraic groups of exceptional type in arbitrary characteristic.
